Thai boxing could kick-start new career for Mike Tyson
By Connie Levett, Herald Correspondent, in Bangkok
March 19, 2005

It's an unlikely match - a flailing Mike Tyson and the newly minted Thai boxing world championship series.

The 38-year-old bankrupt is being sought by the new World Boxing Council Muaythai organisation for a monthly series of title fights set for 12 countries across all weight divisions. The new organisation will issue world rankings for muay Thai fighters and plan the first series for the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas in July.

In muay Thai, a mixture of boxing and martial arts, opponents can use elbows, knees and feet as well as their fists to score points. They may not, however, bite, as Tyson did when he took off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear in 1997.

"He is a boxer who can barely get a match-up. And this is an opportunity for him to become a martial arts warrior, a reformed person," said Patrick Cusick, secretary-general of the month-old World Boxing Council Muaythai organisation, which is pursuing Tyson for the newly sanctioned elite series.

If Tyson switches now, he could be ready for a July fight, said Mr Cusick, estimating Tyson would need only two to three months to learn the ropes.

"He understands fighting, he understands boxing skills. He has never been taught kicks and knee strikes but he would understand the elbows and punches very well," he said.

Tyson has apparently expressed interest in Thailand after Australia indicated it would refuse him permission to train there because of his criminal record. He was jailed for rape in 1992 and has continued to have run-ins with the law.

His trainer, the Australian Jeff Fenech, has sent a representative to inspect facilities at Bangkok's Fairtex gym, though not specifically in relation to muay Thai training.

"He likes muay Thai and he's being encouraged to make the switch," a World Boxing Council official involved in talks with Tyson told The Nation. "It's his best option right now."

Mr Cusick denied the push to get Tyson to switch to muay Thai was a cheap publicity gimmick. "No, there is genuine interest in it ... He may not be able to get another big fight in international boxing but he could in muay Thai."

Tyson's ring record includes the ear biting, trying to snap an opponent's elbow while in a clinch, throwing a punch well after the bell, refusing to stop fighting after the referee halted the bout with an outclassed opponent, inadvertently hitting the official and knocking him to the canvas, and refusing a pre-fight urine analysis, then testing positive for marijuana after the fight. But the WBC Muaythai organisation still wants him.

"The rules of muay Thai are very defined and strictly implemented," Mr Cusick said. "No biting allowed, no headbutting: he'd have to be told that very carefully."

From the Sydney Morning Herald. I love the last line!

Tyson's training with Jeff Fenech now?
I know he left Freddy Roach, but what happened to Buddy McGirt; who was announced as his trainer as recently as a few months ago?

He was scheduled to fight McBride last year, but Danny Williams ended up getting the shot instead of McBride and ran with it.

Last night McBride was fighting on Friday Night Fights and they said the bout with Tyson was going to go ahead for this summer, in DC.

Not to say McBride has any chance however; he won kind of a bogus stoppage against a guy with more ability, but a HORRENDOUS gameplan, by clubbing the guy with forearms to the back of his head & pushing his had down in the clinch. McBride Landed 6 straight power punches on the guy and didn't seem to phase him. Even a 40% Tyson will murdalize him.

That explains it a little bit better.
I mean if people training at Roach's gym wear their t-shirts, i think you can kinda trust the interviews on there.

I don't blame mike for shoppin around.
I'd love to see him get back with Rooney, but any of the other 3 guys is great.

Coming from the experience of a few gyms with mostly self-motivated guys, it is kinda weird to see these trainers jumping at the chance to babysit the guy (or at least take credit for babysitting the guy). I think eventually; whoever he goes with, he's gonna need to surround himself with a ton of self motivated guys (fighters and trainers) and not just PR guys looking for a paycheck- I also think he knows this.

Hope he fights in DC tho- coz there's a chance I'd get to see him. lol

I hope he gets elbowed in his pretty face when he starts to fight "Muay Thai" style.

i understand your desire to see him get elbowed in the face, but i wouldnt call it pretty on any level.

I think 3 months to learn Thai boxing is a bit ambitious.

meh ... i'm willing to bet he's gonna be primarily relying on his hand game and he's taking 3 months to fill in the gaps.

years ago he would have probably done really well with this, but now im not so sure. he might win a couple if they throw some lower level people at him, but if he cant be at the top of his game anymore i dont know how he'd expect to be at the top of someone elses.

If he could defend leg kicks and get the clinch down, Tyson would murder most people in K-1.

But he cant.

Wouldn't take much training to get there. I doubt he'll do it since he can still get paid bigger money boxing.

bob sapp was big, didn't kick, his punches didn't have good form and he was susceptable to the leg sweeps. he has an ok run. tyson is smaller but can punch alot better. if he can cover up good and be agresive, i think he will do ok against some of the mediocre oponnants. when he fought lennox lewis, he couldn't get past his jab; how will he be against some kicks?????

Hands move a lot quicker than feet. Comparing a jab with even a teep is like apples and oranges. None of these guys have anywhere near the power in their hands as Tyson has. He'd destroy people. Only the top, experienced guys could handler him right off. If Tyson gets a hang for the game, then forget it.

Ill agree with this one. Anyone who takes Tyson with a grain of salt is in for a boulder. He may be a media joke, but I still would not want him to hit me no matter what glove he is wearing. Tyson has proven that he isnt playing a game anymore, hes pretty serious, I think the last thing we need is to give this guy even more weapons to kick peoples arses with. But oh well. Hes an F'n animal.

agreed. tyson would dominate in K-1

i remember seeing an interview with tyson around the time he fought lewis. he basically said that he knew he wasn't as good as he use to be and all the crazy stuff that he did was an act to get more people to watch him fight. so i will definately be standing by the good 'ol descrambler waiting for the free-per view to come on.

I like mike and i'm gonna root for him...
but if you think a boxer can close the distance and fire a jab faster than a good kickboxer can put a footjab/teep/sidekick inbetween them, then I think we're going to have to agree to disagree (not that there are so many guys in K-1 who can perform those kicks well)...
probably also going to have to disagree on whether or not a tyson punch is more powerful than a good (read: cro cop-esque) round kick to the head....

GunnedDownAtrocity
03-22-2005, 03:27 AM
i dont thing anyone said it was more powerful, just that its faster.

I think the whole point is that tyson has always been good at knockin peeps the fuk out with that punch. Im interested to see what happens with this. give the dude a good 2 years at muay thai and it could be scary.

I would definitely watch a Tyson - CroCop K1-rules fight, or a Tyson Boniasky/Alignashov (spell??)/other top technical k1 guys.
