Some mentions hard work, talents, valid training methods.

Some emphasizes being aggressive.

Some said that spar all the time. This is the only way to learn to fight.

Look beyond styles.

What are fundamental in your school or styles?

What it takes you to be good at what you are doing?

hard work, that's what it takes. You can have natural talent, or you can have a good instructor/school, and you can have an efficient style, but if you don't work hard and stay consistant, it's all for naught.

Keep an open mind.

Do not play "sifu says". A good teacher will encourage research and experiments.

Recoginition of one's own physical properties and limitations...which is key to overcoming limitations (and injuries), and eliminates thoughts that because someone else in a class or style is very good, that you will be that good as well. Who knows what that other person had to go thru to get that good?

1)Your own personal effort, talent and intelligence

2)The people you surround yourself with

3)The "system" of training methods that you use

I'd say all of those carry weight in terms of how you progress as a fighter and martial artist.

Are you seeking public approval or self enlightenment?

If you want public approval then train hard and spend even more time out there meeting tons of people. Even then your skill might not be up high enough.

If you are seeking personal enlightenment then train hard and have fun improving your very existance with every moment spent training, mind/body/spirit.

Essentially one path seeks to please others the other seeks to self happiness.

Courage and humility. A great deal of humility.
