Looks like he didn't have his thumbs hooked around the bar and it rolled out of his grip to me. Why do people do that anyway?

I bench press at the gym(luckily for me i have started off light by comparison)
but it is always a worry for me that i will slip on my grip and suffer something like that guy did. Thats why i never try to handle any weight that i am not sure of,,,even if i do have a spotter. Looks like the spotters there were not paying attention and looking out for that guys' safety. they just backed away assuming he could handle that weight. Had they been around hima bit closer watching carefully they could have prevented that mishap.

except pullups. as far as that dude benching, i'd be surprised if that wasn't his first such accident, if he's been training thumbless for a long time.

Not sure if it was a thumbless grip...looks like he couldn't get a grip all the way round the bar because of the padding on the gloves.
