From Steve Cotter's Full KOntact (http://www.fullkontact.com/) site. He's a guy on Dragondoor.

I've never seen anything like this before. I would assume it would not be the best way to protect your ribs.

He's conditioning his body to absorb a blow to that area
I wouldn't call it "blocking" per se
I think it's good training to condition ones body, but it has to go hand in hand with combat skills.
the's a strong chance that a person could get struck in the ribs, I've had my ribs cracked before because I didn't have a good guard and I was tired.
It was a powerful kick, If I hadnt had the basic conditioning I have my ribs would have been broken...it's as simple as that.

We have drills similar to that for the whole body.
from the bottom up it is:
-back of calf-hit with calf
-inside of thigh-hit with thigh
-outside of thigh-hit with thigh
-buttocks-hit with buttocks
-abs-hit with knee
-top of shoulder hits ribs
-ribs hit ribs
-back hit back
-kick back
-punch to chest
-chest hit chest
-forehead hit forehead
-forearms ad naseum

if you want to help me post I can email a quicktime clip that I posted in the Mantis section some years ago

Gee, doesn't it bear a strong resemblance to some types of iron body training?

^ Huh? Probably. I'm confused as to why you quoted my post before asking that.

I'm not sure what that clip was suppose to be showing so I can't really comment on it...but you have bigger lats than that dude...

I have a video of a Shaolin Monk doing that, only he drops his hands and wraps his arms around the kick to catch it, and throw the opponent to the ground.

Sorry, I was too lazy to edit it out before I posted. :D

Replace the kick with a 2 x 4 and add some jow and you have part of our iron body routine.

Looks like old school karate training.

I think he posts at dragondoor.com. Why don't you go ask him? Then give us a link so we can see :)

Ironfist,

Did you look at all of the clips that are at his website? He is not blocking a kick with his lats.

He has helped me a lot with my kettlebell workouts as well as further developing my I chuan techniques.

Take a look at the following article that Steve recently wrote and can be found at dragon door and IronGarm.
http://forum.dragondoor.com/training/message/334624%5C

BTW, If I lived out in San Diego, I'd train in person with him in a heartbeat. His knowledge base in deep and thorough.

I forgot to mention that Steve is a full contact champion and won in Taiwan, not the US. His main style is Hsing-I.
