I've been interested in what Kung Fu practitioners done before the MMA craze and san shou/sanda seems to be what went on. Where can I get some information pertaining to this? The time period I'm looking for is back in the 1930's where Kung Fu practitioners fought bare knuckle on a lei tai. I've got one little video clip but it doesn't provide much information.

Thanks.

Do you have the one where the old kung fu guys are bopping each other on the top of the head? That's the only one I've seen.

Yes, unfortunately I have! :D

Here's another one I've found. http://www.jiayo.com/videos/86_leitai.mov

There's a bit of info on the 1928 Kuoshu tournament (held in Nanjing) and a few tidbits about the 1933 tournament as well. In terms of video there's stuff out there from the 60's and 70's but quality can be iffy and for some reason or another some folks refuse to release the films.

The no padded gloves (they used canvas "gardening" kind of gloves) Kuoshu style fighting was going on until 1986. You might want to contact the United States Chinese Kuoshu Federation (USCKF) and see if they have any of those tournaments available on video (I'm not aware of a public release of this material), The president of the USCKF (Huang Chien-liang) has been attending the Kuoshu World Championships since 1975 so maybe this could lead you to something.

Good luck!

I'm not sure where to get Lei Tai footage, but that would be cool.

I've always thought that the fighting strategies and methods of CHinese martial arts are highly influenced by their history of fighting in the Lei Tai, in the same way that Western Boxing is so tied with their Boxing Ring.

The traditional Lei Tai, as I understand it, was an open platform, raised off the ground with no ropes. The first one knocked out, or knocked off was the loser.

Imagine how Western Boxing strategy, or even Muay Thai, would have to change under those circumstances.

There's a san shou video. Looks like it was taped back in the 70's or so. You can really tell the difference between the Chinese San Shou throwing as opposed to the Judo throwing methods in this one (which seems to be in alot of modern San Shou). They're not throwing to help eachother land; the guy in yellow dropped the guy in black on his head a few times! It's a good thing the guy in black was quick and limber.

Here's a Yi Quan sparring clip... I think this is the one IronFist is referring to with the "bopping on the head" and all.

I got these from http://www.shenwu.com/discus/messages/27/2000.html?1107557983, look around for some more interesting clips. I'm on dial up so it takes all day to get these!

:)

My Shifu's father (Lu Zhen Dou - mizong quan) won the first two national kuoshu touranments for lei tai fighting (as well as forms for various weapoins like monks spade). But unfortunatly I've never been able to find any footage of him fighting.

They're not throwing to help eachother land; the guy in yellow dropped the guy in black on his head a few times! Tell that to the people I know who have neck injuries from Judo. I didn't see anything in the video that is illegal or not practiced in Judo or Wrestling. I saw that video a couple years ago and the thing that has ever really stuck out in my mind is the mismatch in skill.

the bop on the head is classic...would make for a cool animated avatar

Next time I can't lift my surgically repaired shoulder as high as the other, I'll remember that Judo players throw to help the other guy land

They ARE NOT doing that. The rules encourage Judoka to throw the other guy to his back, because of the scoring system. If he lands on his head, so what.

As Rhadi Ferguson has said "The other guys' body is his problem." Trust me when I tell you that I certainly don't care what happens to the other guy. I'm trying to throw him and if he breaks something, so be it.
