What is the purpose of the "fixed elbow" princilple? The principle rule being one should start from a point of structured stability not try to work their way to a point of sturctured stability in the middle of something frantic or chaotic.

Good response. With the elbow as fixed in place as it can be while fighting (meaning it will not always be actually fixed in place, and in my system of WC that is the distance of the extended thumb and pinky finger, with the thumb on the soloar plexus and pinky on the elbow) you have a "Buffer Zone". When someone applies pressure to your guard or your guard meets force you have a easier time dealing with it when the elbow is away from the body in a neutral position.

One way to look at it is to see it more as a "fixed elbow line." The saam bai fut (1st section) of the SLT form develops the elbow line. It teaches you the correct pathway for the elbow to travel in and out with the majority of techniques. You also discover that when techniques do not move forward or back, that the elbow will be positioned somewhere along this "elbow line" the majority of the time.
