I was just wondering if anyone has any of the classical Xingyiquan books translated by Joseph Crandall. The books I'm talking about can be found at: www.jps.net/stma/XingyiBooks.html (http://www.jps.net/stma/XingyiBooks.html)

Would anyone care to give a critique of them? I know that they include classical "poems" on Xingyi practise. I already have Robert W. Smith's, Sun Lu Tang's, and Yang Jwing-Ming's books on Xingyi, so would these books be worth getting, since these books also have "poems" (the same maybe??)on Xingyi practise?

Myself, I didn't find any usefulnees in the books. I own on in fact. What I do like is Ming's book on Xing Yi and Sun Lu Tangs. I find it to be a great resource. Go to www.emptyflower.com (http://www.emptyflower.com) that is a great website on Hsing-I.

I purchased Mr. Crandall's translations and think they are quite good for general reference. I haven't had a chance to check the accuracy of the translation but IMO I think they are much better than Smith's material as they are translations of "first hand writings" (i.e. original authors such as Li Cun Yi and Jiang Rongqiao.) As opposed to summaries.

To plug a slightly different view on hsing-i. My company has published a complete translation of Huang Po Nien's 1928 classic "Hsing-i Fist and Weapon Instruction" which covers some traditional background as well as the miltiary application of hsing-i (rifle and bayonet and two handed sabre). See www.rovere.com. (http://www.rovere.com.)

I haven't read any of those books on xingyi- I have the Ming, Sun Lu Tang, Robert Smith, and the Xing Yi Nei Gong book. Those are very helpful (Smith book only ok though). You can get some of those books/translations at www.plumflower.com (http://www.plumflower.com), let us know how they are if you do.

I have both Mr. Rovere's "Hsing-i Fist and Weapon Instruction" and all of Mr Crandalls xingyi translations and they are the best you can buy, because, like Mr. Rovere said, they are first hand translations, just the way these masters wrote them. They are priceless.
