What is a mantis kick?
Is that like a turn out front kick?

Depending on what style of mantis there are many kicks. Pretty much the same kicks that everyone else has. There isn't a "mantis kick" per say though, at least not in my line. In 7* these are the kicks.

leg methods - tui fa

cun tui - short leg
ga tui - stop leg
heng deng tui - side kicking leg
chuan xin tui - piercing leg
bi men tui - close door leg
jiu tui - seizing leg
quan jiao - circle foot
bei ti tui - rear kicking leg
pu tui - pouncing leg
shi zi tui - cross leg
gua tui - hang up leg
bai lian tui - outside swing leg
deng pu tui - splitting leg
fan shen tui - turning inside swing leg
dan fei tui - single flying leg
shuang fei tui - double flying leg
lian huan tui - continuous legs
xuan feng tui - tornado leg
sao tang tui - front sweep leg
hou sou tui - rear sweep leg
wo zhan tui - lie down & turn leg
cheng gong tui - successful leg

Now the kick you are talking about is the "bump" kick or "stop" kick I believe. A shot to the shin or knee with the inside of the foot or heel striking with the toes facing out.

So in our lineage we stress kicks from the chest down. Although you see the kicks above in forms these are the ones that get drilled the most.

push kick
tai kick
bump kick
toe kick
side kick
