I'm interested in training with a good internal martial arts teacher in Melbourne. At this stage I've seen a few schools but they seem wushu based with little martial application. In any case I thought this forum would be a good place to start asking some questions. Suggestions anyone?

Thanks for the reply. I checked out Ziranmen and the impression that I get is that Master Liu specialises in the wushu forms more than internal energy. Thanks anyway. :)

Hi Greenmoon

You could not be more wrong in your assumptions.

If your after the internal side of things you wont get anyone better in Australia.

Wushu is there for those who wish to learn, Master Liu teaches traditional arts, check out the arts he teaches on the site.

If your after internal side of things or anything else, you wont find many people in Australia or the world for that matter of his pedigre and lineage...... His knowledge and skill speak for themselves. Do youself a favour and check it out.

Actually there is an article on him in Kung Fu Mag coming in Jan/Feb.

Or there is the Six Harmonies Kung Fu Academey in St Kilda as well - Call Sifu Stuart on 9537 0620 say you got the contact from Blacktiger on the kung fu forum. Sifu Stuart is Master Liu's disciple and a fantastic teacher so you have the options.

I live in melbourne area too, and am shifting to north melbourne area so I asked this question about tai chi schools

hmmm all these people living in melbourne area, we should start up a training partner forum or something, so we can get in contact with people in our area for a bit of training with people from other clubs and such.

Blacktiger thanks for the input. It's good for me to hear from someone who trains at Ziranmen and I don't really have an eye for the internal yet unless I feel it and I didn't get to do that. Out of interest do you get to practice much of the Rou Shou in Bagua? In any case I'll come and check it out again sometime.

Slade, I've been looking at a few tai chi schools as well. Did you end up checking out Peter Wu? I'd be interested in your impressions. I've also heard that John Chow is worth checking out - I haven't made it out there yet.

Hi,

Not sure about that style of Bagua but Master Liu teaches Cheng Shi Ba Gua Zhang.

Master Liu is currently a student of the Grand Master Liu Jing Ru
an expert of Cheng Shi Ba Gua Zhang from Cheng Tinghua's lineage, so the knowledge is very good. His Bagua is very good

As for his tai chi, he teaches Chen, Sun, Yang and Wudang tai chi.

I have also heard that Peter Wu is very good. :D

Just depends what you want to do

Interesting blacktiger thanks for that info. The Rou Shou that I know of is kind of the push hands equivalent but in Bagua, it may be called something different where you train though. I've heard that GM Liu Jing Ru is very good. I'm pretty sure that when I checked Master Liu(a while ago now) at Melbourne Uni he was doing a different style of Ba Gua, but this may just be my memory slipping. Still, it sounds as if he is proficient in many styles and so definitely worth my while coming to see. By the way would a student usually get a chance to "cross hands" with master Liu?

I havnt checked out any yet, im just collecting schools so I can check em all out when I move up closer to them, ATM I live in mornington area so its a bit too far.

ATM I know of a Hung Gar place, Buck sing Choy lay Fut, Few Chen tai chi places, and a decent MMA place might also check out this Zinramen or however you spell it, to me it looked like it was gonna be all forms no application mainly cos I saw he did teach wushu in the "Arts" section of his site.

For what its worth I found these ones on various web directories

Chen Style Taijiquan Academy
Elwood VIC 3184
ph: (03) 9525 6852 Martial Arts & Self Defence Instruction &/Or Supplies

CHEN STYLE TAIJIQUAN ACADEMY
130 Tennyson Street, Elwood VIC 3184
Phone: (03) 9596 3012

Elwood is not that far from the city, just below caufield basicly.

They have different phone numbers so I dunno if they are different schools, probably the same school my guess.

Sounds good.

You really need to go and check the different schools out for your self as its good if you sit in on a class and have a look.:D
That way you see what your getting and can have a chat with the Master/Sifu otherwise you may cut yourself short of getting some great stuff.

As for the Wushu side of things I guess you need to understand that just becuase a school teaches Wushu as a component of the curriculum, does not mean the other arts taught will only be forms.

Wushu is its own thing entirely as you will see on the site.

Making the assumption that Liu He (Six Harmonies), Bagua,Liu He Mantis, Zi Ran Men, Xing Yi and 64 Hand - which are all very traditional styles will just be forms with no applications is a little misguided.

My advice, ring up the schools your looking at - ask to rock up to some classes and check out the proof in the pudding. That way you can get what your looking for:D
