View Full Version : What's the purpose of the notch in the back of a beer bottle?

A lot of them have it. It's right near the bottom on the back side of the bottle. What is it for?

It has to do with the casting process when making the bottles and moving them around the beer factory.

The notch in the botom of a beer bottle's purpose is that it spins the bottle to the front after filling and capping to allow the label to be put on..

Actually Earthdragon has it half right.
The notch is to spin the bottle to a particular position for label application.
Some beer bottles are embossed with the Company logo and they don't want their logo covered up by the label, that is if it is a body label.

I thought it might be related to the manufacturing process. I also thought it might have another purpose, like being able to use it to open another bottle or something.
