Heard he's going to compete in MMA (or "NHB" whatever you'd call them) rule matches... anyone know anything about this?

I checked his official website. No word about any MMA match coming up. It'd be interesting to see him in the UFC tho. I'd like to see him get his a$$ kicked. I can't stand that guy.

" I'd like to see him get his a$$ kicked. I can't stand that guy." i've heard the same type of thing from a few people that have met him.

I don't believe he would get his ass kicked. His stand-up skills are quite good. If he became a sprawl and brawler, using throws to attain dominant positions, he'd be tough to beat.

Where he might lose is to a submission specialist or an excellent clinch fighter. The slower pace (in the sense that clinches are not broken), would change that aspect considerably.

While I could be wrong, where Cung stands now probably makes him an B+ level fighter. Experience and some more ground experience would quickly put him at A level.

all things aside, i would agree with mp.

I agree with MP. The feeling I get is that he likes to be a big fish in what he does, make his money, and not get busted up to bad by being taken down and pounded. Can't blame him.

As I recall, Le has done well in his limited international appearances, no?

He won a Shidokan tournament. The last rounds of the fight allow for ground fighting with MMA gloves. If a fight goes passed the bare-knuckle full-contact karate rounds and by the MT rounds, you switch gloves and go on to MMA. The event is marketed as the triathalon of martial arts.

lol, i don't doubt it. The guy seems so full of himself. They need to find him some better opponents, or he should branch out to K-1 rules or MMA. I think he'd hold his own pretty well in MMA if he had a competent submission game, but I don't think he'd be dominant. His striking is solid but from what I've seen he's not a strong brawler or a knock out artist. He is an exceptional takedown artist, but in MMA that won't help you much without a dominant ground game.

One of of my instructors is currently working for Cung Le as a trainer and as far as I know Cung Le will not be fighting in MMA anytime soon. He has been bringing in a Jiu Jitsu expert for his classes though and I guess he has part of an octagon set up. I was told that they have been incorporating MMA style training into the san shou classes. You may see fighters from his gym fighting in MMA in the future, I'm not sure. As far as his groundskills go, he has training in wrestling, sambo and BJJ, so I'm sure he could handle himself on the ground.

got this from an MMA forum

does anyone know if its true? it will be good to see how san shou works in MMA.
he does have a wrestling background

My Headcoach Cung Le will bring San Shou to MMA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok guys. Cung Le has been my head coach for years. I know him very well more than any of you here. He is 34 yrs old now. He has the best judo, greco roman wrestling, mongolian freestyle wrestling techniques. His hands are good but it's his kicks that makes him stand out especially that powerful side kick. In his gym, he has a great Jiu Jitsu coach, Garth Taylor who used to train BJ Penn. One of his San Shou student, James Fanshier was the middle or light heavy weight of the KOTC. Even Josh Koshcheck trained in our gym for a brief period after the TUF 1. American Kickboxing Academy fighters cross train with Cung Le's gym a lot before a fight. I think Coach Cung Le will dominate in the March fight. But I have doubts if he will do well in UFC if put on his back or has good submission defense. Like Mirko CroCop said everybody loses in MMA. I have feeling Coach Cung might get submitted by a BJJ expert.

I've read he was making the switch to MMA as well and would like to see how his style changes. I'm doubting he's going to use his cross scissor sweep .... it gets you points for a take down in San Shou, but doesn't give you much of a positional advantage to continue fighting from.

Will be interesting. He definitely has more to lose than gain.

Scissor-leg takedowns can work in MMA. You can use them to setup ankle and achilles locks.

i was about to say that, i seen it done before, i think it was gomi that caught someone from chute box with a heel hook. it can be done but its very risky, you miss it you get stomp or punched out.

Strikeforce (http://www.cungle.com/cungle/images/strikeforce_10Mar06.jpg) is this Friday (3/10/6). I'm going. Anyone else going to be there?

I can't wait to see how Cung Le does in his first MMA fight. I absolutely love to watch him do San Shou. Hopefully he can transition well. I think there are very few (if any) people who can beat him standing up in the UFC, but if he hasn't learned some advanced grappling he'll be lost.

I doubt he tries the scissor takedown. It's low percentage enough without the only advantage being that it might set you up for even more low percentage move. In all likely hood, you'll just end up in a scamble for position with a 50/50 shot of winning. If any of his signature moves come under display, it'll be the suplex, imo.

BTW, he's fighting somebody he already beat in San Shou...

It's not a low percenage move for Kung Le, though; it's his bread and butter. too bad it's not pay-per-veiw. :(

I'm told it will be broadcast somewhere, somewhen, but I don't know the details. Here's my fight rap (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40708) - the short version. The Cung Le signature move was that he just kicked the crap out of Altman. Cung's kicking skill is awesome.

There are plenty of Cung threads here, but I chose this one to post this.

Cung Le to Serve a Dana White Type Role on The Ultimate Fighter: China (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/cung-le-serve-dana-white-193035503--mma.html)

With news that The Ultimate Fighter: China will serve as the next international edition of the series, UFC president Dana White has revealed that UFC middleweight Cung Le will take his role on the show.

While no timeline has been revealed for the show, White is unsure whether Cung Le will appear on any episodes, but he is there to remind the fighters why they are in the house and act as a mentor.

Like all the previous seasons of the show, two fighters will coach the teams. The coaches have yet to be announced.

“TUF China is happening,” White said. “(Cung Le) is going to be the ‘me' in China. He's there to remind everyone why they're there and what's going on. He was in the office two days ago and I walked him through everything with The Ultimate Fighter and he's ready to go.”

With TUF: Australia vs. Canada currently in the tryouts stage, White also revealed that a series in Mexico is in the works, with Cain Velasquez sure to take some part in the production.
