I'm going to be attending a series of seminars to learn a Kwan Do form. I'm looking for a good quality Kwan Do that is not just a cheap demo model. Any suggestions?

Here's our standard traditional model - it's a good practice weapon - the brass dragon fitting gives it a nice heft. (http://www.martialartsmart.net/45-88.html).

Here's our Dragon Well model - it's heavy - I wouldn't recommend this if you're just starting.. (http://www.martialartsmart.net/45-81cs.html)

Here's our wushu model - probably not what you're looking for - it's the demo one and can't cut anything. (http://www.martialartsmart.net/45-81wu.html)

I have Wing Lam's version of the first link Gene posted. It's pretty nice to work with. I would recommend it.

The Dragon Well version is not balanced at all. I hated working with that thing.

For what it's worth, I started out using a light wushu version then after about 6 months got the dragon well version at 13 lbs. The difference is huge, much more then I thought it woud be. The best thing about the heavier version is that you are forced to be in the correct stance and use your body properly because it's too heavy to rely on your arms when the thing is moving. (at least it is for me) The better stance and postioning results in a better form when using either of them.

The Dragon Well Kwan Dao is a boat anchor. It's freakin' top heavy, but it's a beautiful blade, the kind that would punch through a Hummer hood like a butcher knife through butter. If you get them off the rack (direct from Longquan) they are mounted on this hardwood shafts that shatter easily just from the weight of the blade. Here at Tiger Claw (http://www.tigerclaw.com) (MartialArtsMart's wholesaler) we replace the shafts with a thick metal shaft. It's hollow metal, but it solves that nasty shaft shattering problem. It also improves the balance considerably. I confess that it's still quite top heavy, but not as bad as when the shafts aren't replaces, like with most other Dragon Well vendors.
