I just got word from Deru (Shawn Liu). He said Deyang called him at midnight last night. I'm waiting to hear more. It's a terrible loss for Shaolin. I'm at a complete loss for words.

Condolences to those who feel loss.

This is a man who lived a long and storied life.
He has left a considerable legacy and his life is surely something to be celebrated in his passing.

Wang Yu Min, the C.I.T.S. Dengfeng rep (http://www.dfintertour.com/g2.htm) and a layman disciple of Venerable Shi Suxi, informed me that he passed away at 11:00 on March 8th and that his funeral will be on the 14th of this month.

Grandmaster Suxi left us with a good Shaolin koan for today - his pagoda. I've been meditating on it since I heard the news of his passing. We reported the pagoda in our
Shaolin Special 2003 (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=397) in United Nations, Divided Shaolin: Clearing Shaolin Valley and the Relocation of Shaolin Village by me and
Shaolin Special 2004 (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=500) in The Pagoda of the Great Master by Shawn Liu (Deru).

I posted the wrong link above - that's the old version of Respect to Venerable Grandmaster Shi Suxi - I didn't realize that one was still up there. Here's the one I meant to post. (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=564).

Brad: As I've mentioned before, I don't beleive in stickies. In this case, for such a great master, I imagine it will keep itself on the front page of this forum sheerly out of the respect we all hold for him. He was the greatest Shaolin monk I've met so far. Does anyone besides me here have any rememberances about him?

What a great figure- he has kept his deep perspective through much turbulence around him. Om Shanti.

Gene- when you said in passing that there are fifghters who have Parkinson's-
who in CMA besides Ali in boxing? What do you is the reason in cases other than Ali?
There is some talk that hard iron palm work can result in some trembling.

There's a lot of discussion of Parkinson's and boxing - here's an article on the National Parkinson Foundation site (http://www.parkinson.org/site/apps/s/content.asp?c=9dJFJLPwB&b=108269&ct=192076). It was actually Dr. Rich Russell, of russbo.com, who diagnosed Suxi with Parkinsons, just from observation. I'd be inclined to agree, but as you'll read on the NPF site, it's more likely to be Parkinson's-like afflications. When I said other 'great fighters', I was refering to this trend for Parkinson-like symptoms in other boxers and not necessarily martial artists. I don't know of any specific martial artists suffering from Parkinson's, but it's been my experience that once they show symptoms like that, most martial artists drop out of the martial world. It's hard to stay in the martial world when you've lost some of your faculites. I think that's another reason why Suxi was special. He was wheelchair bound and everyone still respected his martial skill. Like Ali, back in the day, Suxi was reputed to be quite extraordinary. Sadly, there isn't any footage of those times that I know of.

Venerable Shi Suxi, passed away at 11:12 on March 8th, 2006. His Buddhist burial service will be on the 14th of this month. From yesterday the temple has been on constant vigil with visitors in mourning for Shi Su Xi. I am already in the Shaolinsi and i will try to inform you more....

Shi Su Xi brought me to tears.

First, he came out to greet us at the doors of the Temple. Then, he received us in the tea room. My brother and I were caught without seats, and so one of the monks leaned into Su Xi's ear, with De Yang next to him, and Su Xi made a gesture and we were basically told to sit on their side of the room.

Several monks spoke, against orders, and finally Shi Su Xi said something. His voice was light but suddenly everyone gave silence. He spoke with us for about 20 minutes, beginning with the history of Shaolin, the dharma, how proud he was to see the flower being transplanted and spread...his words were measured and thoughtful, and seemed to be carefully chosen to say more than they did- but that also might have just been because of who translated.

The humility of his respect touched me very deeply.

This is very sad. A great man has passed. Hopefully his greatness will live on in all who he has touched.
