Azumi is Aya Ueto (http://sheki.theppn.org/azumi/). I just caught the the original (2003) by Ryuhei Kitamura (director of Versus - and Versus 2 is in production!) There's an Azumi 2, which was done in 2005. I must check that out. Azumi is an orphan assassin surrounded by ninjas, ronin and samurai, all with really bad hair and way too much thigh exposed. It's pure popcorn and Azumi wears a cute little keikogi (http://www.martialartsmart.net/35-04l.html) top that's white and purple, shows off her glorious legs, and looks spectacular when splattered with blood. A definite sword hottie!

Totally agree with you! The only problem being that, while I felt the same in 2003, if you're living in Japan you seriously can't get away from Aya Ueto - she's like, EVERYWHERE. Imagine any product, and she'll be on the poster for it. :cool:

Hmm, well not really. Things here don't really work the same I think - i.e. rather than overt sex its more lolita complex. She basically has a fixed smile on any poster she's on, which wears a little thin after a while. I don't know if Zhang Ziyi looks like an underage teen, because a lot of Asian women (and many people of Asian descent in general) look younger than their years. Which, appearance-wise, might not be all bad as the years go on. :) Heck, I'm an Asian guy, and get mistaken for late 20s/early 30s all the time (I'm 45).

I think Jennifer Garner looks pretty hot, but I've never watched her playing Electra.

Lilly Ho and Betty Pei Ti are hot in Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan.

It's been a while since I watched it, but Shinobi: Heart Under Blade has a really cute hottie, I believe her name is Yukie Nakama.

There's an even more recent movie out called Geigha Assassin starring Minami Tsukui. Though I don't consider her a hottie, she does wield a sword okay. Her empty-hand fights aren't great, but she puts in her best effort, and the movie's really not bad.

Yet another Japanese film, Skyhigh, has hottie Kanae Uotani as a sword-wielding serial killer whose crimes include using a magical sword to destroy the ghosts of victims she's already taken the hearts from. Though the female lead also eventually uses a sword herself, I consider Kanae the scene-stealer. Neither one looks particularly well-trained at handling a sword, though Kanae is also more convincing in her role. Plus Kanae's cute, so who cares. She also has a small, non-fighting role in Aragami, by the same director.

She's an actress and a model and the daughter of veteran Chinese actress, Zheng Pei Pei.

But perhaps, you might remember the charming sweetheart from the Miss Hong Kong pageant in 1999, where she emerged top three alongside peers and famous Hong Kong actresses such as Sonija Kwok and Myolie Wu.

AsiaOne met with Marsha Yuan in Hong Kong recently, where we found her with her latest interest - pole dancing.

The multi-talented celebrity, who was the winner for the International Pole Dance Championship in Manila in 2008 (Pole Art category), has been pole dancing for about two years now. While she is still very much involved in singing and acting, she also teaches pole dancing at Pure Fitness in Hong Kong.

In an exclusive interview, Marsha tells us how she got her hands on pole dancing, and shares her views on the sport, often associated with sleaze.

The star, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, also talks about her relationship with her mother, Zheng Pei Pei, also known as the Queen of Swords for her performance in the 1966 King Hu wuxia film.

On the topic of relationships, Marsha also reveals a little bit about her love life.

Project Runway host Heidi Klum carried her 3-year-old daughter Lou in Brentwood, Calif. on Saturday (January 5). The former Victoria’s Secret model toted her tot – who brought along her pink sword – while stepping out for Starbucks. The model mom was joined by ber bodyguard beau Martin Kirsten and 6-year-old son Johan.

Later that same day, Heidi and Martin were seen dropping off her daughters – including Leni, 8 – at gymnastics class in Culver City.

Last week, we saw the hot new couple lunching with the girls in L.A. And last month we spotted the blonde beauty and her new man spending quality time with all of her children – including 7-year-old son Henry – in sunny Los Angeles.

Things are really heating up between the pair. The model-turned-TV-star recently opened up to Marie Claire about her hot sex life.

“Some people are more experimental in bed and others are more boring,” Klum says. “If you are wild and crazy, bring it on so the other person is well aware that you have little devil horns that come out every once in a while.”

Klum, 39, who filed for divorce from the kids’ father, musician Seal, last April, went on to say that their split was not “devastating.”

“Did I wish for this to happen to my family? No,” she says. “But everyone is healthy. We’re moving on with our lives. If someone got [very sick] – god forbid – that would be a real problem. It’s not what I wanted. It’s not what anyone wanted. But it’s not a real problem.”

And although she’s not scarred by the breakup, she doesn’t intend to say, “I do” again.

“I don’t think [I'll get married again], no, no,” Klum admits. “I wanted to keep the memory of [mine and Seal's] wedding alive every year. That’s why I thought it would be fun to get married over and over. But now I don’t think it’s that important. I’m not angry about anything, but I don’t think I will. Maybe if I’m with someone for 15 or 20 years, and we do it in our old age as a fun thing to do. … But I don’t have the urgency anymore.”

The third season of AMC’s hit series “The Walking Dead” is just about to kick off, and one of the highlights of the upcoming run of episodes is sure to be the introduction into the ensemble of Danai Gurira’s Michonne. The defiant warrior woman is a favorite among fans of the Robert Kirkman comic book that inspired cable television’s highest-rated scripted drama, and actress and playwright Gurira was brimming with enthusiasm about landing the role during a recent visit to the show’s Georgia set.

Michonne, of course, is known for her skill with a katana, but Gurira was first introduced to the weapon after landing the part.

“In grad school I’d done some broadsword training, but I’ll tell you right now, the broadsword is nothing compared to the katana,” Gurira said with a smile between takes. “I watched a little video of the broadsword being tested against the katana just in terms of little things that have to do with severing armor or whatever, and the katana was so much more bad-asser than the broadsword. The broadsword was useless almost – it was like, ‘Oh, you Brits, you failed. Japanese 1, Brits 0.’ It was like learning from scratch because it is not the same weapon.”

So how did she perfect her skills in order to wield the weapon with apparent ease? Training, training and some additional training.

“I worked with a sword master — he’s also a stunt man,” Gurira explained. “You just work very intensively. We just worked all the time. She wasn’t trained in the bamboo forests of Japan. She figured it out, but there are aspects of even the way she’s portrayed in the comic book where there’s just a calm about how she utilizes it that I found very interesting.

“When I was watching samurai films, there was that same sort of focused calm, effective, efficient economical aspect to it that rung true to what I had seen of her on the page,” she added. I guess that swordmaster wasn't good enough to be named...:rolleyes:

I would definately recommend the original anime; Blood: The Last Vampire. Its not a vampire flick really. The main character just happens to be the last vampire. Which is really just a way for her to be super human and remain as a teenager. It's really just a teen age girl that uses traditional katanas to dispatch shape shifting 'demons' that have infiltrated a high school off the yokoto american air base pre vietnam build up. only a well forged blade is strong enough to cut their hides, thats why she uses old katanas. Its one of the early uses of digital animation along side traditional. I remember being pretty impressed when it first came out and wanting more when it ended. To my shame, I have not watched the live action, or the anime series, both were spawned from the original.

A squadron of warriors is set to descend on San Francisco's Asian Art Museum next week, unleashing a rare glimpse of the Qin Dynasty in 210 B.C. "China's Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor's Legacy" will present 10 life-size terra cotta warriors from a collection of more than 8,000 discovered in 1974 in the First Emperor's burial chambers, along with 110 rare objects in bronze, gold and other materials. The discovery is considered on par with the treasures of the tombs of the pharaohs of Egypt.

The warrior sculptures, each unique, were made to represent the armies of Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China. They were buried with him in an underground complex the size of four football fields, and remain one of the true wonders of the ancient world.

Today's fashion world seems to be having an extended military moment - although with a softer edge than the stoic general and kneeling archer clad in limestone suits of armor on view in the museum's Osher Gallery.

Spring's collections featured prints and fabric manipulations in soft, neutral colors reflecting the texture, color and energy of the remarkable statues. With the rise of independent fashion, it's all about designer-meets-handmade Etsy pieces for a unique, high-low look. This spring, whether urbanites wear pleated jackets or digital moon prints, the idea is to march forward in layered, out-of-the-ordinary fabrics with bold silhouettes - all the better to tune in to their own warrior spirits.

Stacy Hoehle has been in plenty of competitions, from beauty pageants to junior tetrathlons ( run, swim, shoot a gun and show jump a horse over fences) but the 2009 Miss Kentucky United States is facing her biggest competitive challenge in a sport she didn’t pick up until her late-20s.

Hoehle is trying her hand at fencing in an effort to qualify for the Olympics in modern pentathlon. It adds fencing to the four tetrathlon events.

“Fencing is the daunting part,” said Hoehle, 30, an Indianapolis attorney. “It’s the one event I took up latest in life.”

Despite its challenges, Hoehle calls her Thursday night fencing lesson at the Boys and Girls Club West in Zionsville her “favorite day of the week.”

She’s not alone. An eclectic group of children as young as 9 and adults as old as 70 gathered at the club on a recent Thursday. There was a lesson followed by a competition in which a group of unranked fencers competed for their “E” rating; the next step up from being unranked, as established by the U.S. Fencing Association, the sport’s governing body. The ratings go up in reverse alphabetical order from there, with A being the highest ranking.

“This is something you can do forever,” said Paul Geraci, a West Lafayette resident who is a fourth-generation “Maitre d’ Epee,” or “Fencing Master” and member of the Indianapolis Fencing Club.

Fencing is also something that can challenge you for the rest of your life, no matter how much you think you know, added Amy Orlando, an Indianapolis resident, coach for IFC and a former standout fencer at NotreDame.

“There are a lot of mental aspects to it,” Orlando said. “You’re always trying to figure out your opponent. You’re always thinking on your feet. There’s always a new challenge; always something to learn. It’s physical chess. It never gets boring.”

Almost anyone can compete against anyone else, regardless of age and gender, and the sport is not restricted to able-bodied athletes. Fishers High School junior Cat Bouwkamp competed last year from her wheelchair for the U.S. Paralympic team.

Jamie Toalston, a Washington Township resident, said she had extra baby weight she wanted to lose after giving birth to her daughter and decided to take up fencing in 2004. She estimates she’s dropped 50 pounds since, in part because of her fencing workouts.

“With the lunging, it’s a great butt workout,” Toalston said with a laugh. “It’s also a great stress reliever. If you have a bad day, you get to go hit people.”

It’s a tougher workout than it might appear, said Gene Shin, a Washington Township resident who took up fencing about two years ago with his 10-year-old son, Alex. Shin said his shirt is soaked in sweat at the end of every practice.

“It’s a great family activity,” Shin said. “We’re spending two to three hours together. We get to fence each other. We were hooked.”

Shin initially used the fencing club’s equipment until investing in his own. He estimates he’s spent about $300 for him and his son, which includes a protective mask and bib, jacket and knickers.

“It’s very safe,” said Bill Winget, IFC club president. “In 11 years, I’ve never seen anybody get seriously injured.”

He does see them get frustrated, though. As Hoehle can attest, fencing is not for the impatient. The sport requires a great deal of perseverance and concentration.

“In my business life and personal life, I always thought it pays to have a go-getter attitude and while those are beneficial in fencing, you can’t will your way to a win,” Hoehle said. “You have to wait for the other person (to make their move) and that’s so hard.

“It was easier to win Miss Kentucky and finish in the top-five in the U.S. (pageant) than it is to learn the nuances of fencing. I have a way to go before I hone my craft, but this is a sport I can enjoy for a lifetime.”
