SPJ

Yes.

me luv Ba Ji, too.

the first clip is master Wu Lian Zhi performing Ba Ji Xiao Jia.

and then there is also a clip of Master Liu performing Ba Ji interlink forms and some students practicing Xiao Ba Ji and some two men practices.

Usually we start with Chan/silk reeling or entanglement to open the door/arms, move in close and deliver attacks.

May be the Chan and Kao aspects would make people think it is like Chen Tai Ji.

Yes, there are similarities but also differences between the two.

:)

These are better baji clips. I believe they were taken in the 80s.

Wu Lian Zhi's baji has changed over the years. It has become more like chen style taiji.

Hi;

Thanks for asking. The publisher is still ironing out the Chinese fonts. Some words are corrupt.

The pictures are in a better order, now.

It is a very concise book and catches the flavors of the style with some classical moves with explanations.

May be in a month or so.

The production department finalized the book.

It is on the way to the printer department.

It will take a few weeks before I get the hardcopy for galley proof.

It was a headache to solve the Chinese characters.

WM;

Thanks a lot. I am now able to see the TV footage.

It started with Tang Lang (plum flower, six harmony and then 7 stars) and then Ba Ji Lian Huan, Xiao Ba Ji etc.

I think the female singer in the background was Yang Yeng and the guy singer's wife was Xia Tai Fong. the male singer was Zhou Seng.

The song was about the colonel Xie. He led 800 hundreds soldiers defending at the warehouse near Su Zhou river in Shanghai. They were to deter the Japanese advancing army while the main Nationalist force retreating.

It was very patriotic. But kind of wierd to practice Ba Ji at the same time.

---

At the time, Taiwan was derecognised by US. There was a slogan said the calmness in the midst of storm. Feng Yu Zhong De Ning Jin on the TV, too.

Thank you very much. RAF.

I like the last vid, too.

However, there are some areas we do differently.

If it is an extended palm or fist (Cheng Zhang or Quan), there are moments the arms are straight but only for a short while. In the final or end posture, the elbow is down and shoulder is dropped. Cheng Jian Zui Zhou. There are explosion Jin outward but also downward Jin from the whole body.

If there is the turning stamp or Nian Zhen, the feet are paralleled and so are the knees. The horse stance is not too low. Because you raise your heels, turn and land your heels.

In Cheng Zhang or Quan, also the direction of your arm is in parallel with your feet, the elbow and the knee is aligned sort of.

Hakkyokuken (Bajiquan) was always popular in Japan. I know it was there at least as far back as the 80's. Several manga, anime, and video game characters were known for using it in the 80s and 90s. It was very popular at college wushu clubs. Thats how I got intrested in it when I was there. When I first returned to the states no one knew about it but it was very popular there.

I have this book its decent but there are several other Japanese books that are better.

I believe (please correct me if I am wrong) that Su Yu Chang is primarily the one responsible for the popularity of Baji in Japan. Not sure how it all began, but it is one of his students that did the comics mentioned as well. All I know if that he has been going over pretty regularily for many, many years and he has a large following there. I have seen some private video of his teaching very large groups in Japan.

A link to discussion of lineage.

http://www.wohsai.com/Article_Show.asp?ArticleID=4

1st gen: Wu Zhong, studied at Shaolin and with 2 daoist priests?. He incorporated Da Qiang based on Ming's Qi Ji Guang 24 long spear postures. nicked name god of a long spear.

2nd gen: Wu Yong, Wu Long. taught students in Meng village area. It is called Meng Cun old style/frames (soft style).

3rd gen: Li Da Zhong, Zhang Ke Ming etc. introduced the theories of downward sinking Jing, cross Jing and Chan Si Jing. Their styles are hard frames. It is also called Luo Tong. the name of the area they taught students.-- Li Da Zhong exchanged ideas with Pi Gua practitioner: Li Yun Biao. That started merging of Ba Ji and Pi Gua.

4th gen: Huang Si Hai.

5th gen: Li Shu Wen and Ma Feng Tu completed merging of Ba Ji and Pi Gua.

6th gen: Huo Dian Ge, ----, Liu Yun Qiao etc

---

We would be the 7th or 8th gen practitioners etc.

Edit: Huo Dian Ge was the first student of Li Shu Wen. Huo was the head of body guards for the last emperor Pu Yi. Liu Yun Qiao was the last/final student.

Some legends said Ba Ji was from Song Shan Shaolin temple.

Some said it was from the Moslem Chinese or Hui or even Daoist.

We have to push back the timeline then.

A very good post about the first 3 gen of practitioners.

Edit: info or manuscript was from Li Da Zhong students recording the "lineage".

according to this post. Li Shu Wen had over 20 indoor students. Li incorporated Jing Gang Ba Shi, Yi Jing Jing and Ba Ji together.

not to derail this thread...but maybe you guys, being much more aware of these things than myself, might offer some input:

there has been some suggestion that the very popular Okinawan karate form Bassai has its roots in Ba Ji; based on observation, and a fair degree of extrapolation (e.g. - knowing how TCMA techs get changed when done in a non-TCMA context), it would seem at least plausable that there is a possible link, specifically to the first form, xiao jia (the opening), and some of the lines of dan da (especially the finishes, the way it changes directions)

anyway, any thoughts, assistance would be appreciated...

Students yes directly and indirectly.

I had a strong practice with Tong Bei before I started Ba Ji. I had very difficult time with the postures and stepping.

Over time, I got "better". Still my postures and stepping are a lot softer.

Actually, for the most part, Ba Ji is still a lot of softness in most of the movements.

On the other hand, Kao methods have to be hard and very hard.

However, there seems to be some variations on the xiao baji jia form (I know there are 12 versions of xiao baji).

If you look at the end of the following clip, you will see Daemon Huang performing xiao baji in the 1970s. I think this variation is the one that Liu taught as "the Original" xiao baji jia of Li Shu Wen. You also see at the end of the clip, da baji, liu da kai, and baji lian huan.

一打顶肘奔胸膛,二打抱肘顺步赶,三打掸阳拧捆抱,四打提肘硬中闯,五打垮打腰胯合,六打双缠旋绕摔,七打 朝阳横托肘,八打折江头上翻。

These are song or Ge Jue from Chang Chun Ba Ji. They are related to the clips above.

There are 8 sentences.

2. enclose elbow (Bao Zhou) is to use followed step (Shun Bu, the lead hand and the lead leg are on the same side, left to left and right to right) in a hurry.

3. Dan or shan, sorry too hard to translate, might as well look at the clips.

4. elevating the elbow (Ti Zhou) to enter the centerline by force.

5. hitting with the hip (Kua Da) requires the hip and the waist in unison/harmony.

6. entanglement with both arms (Shuang Chan) is to turn and throw.
