Hello Everyone,

I live in Vancouver and I saw a few weeks ago some posters about some Vancouver Martial Arts demonstration. Anyone living in Vancouver see it? If you have, could you let me know when and where it is being held?

Thank you!

The event you might be thinking of is the Can Am Martial Arts Championships which includes a night time demonstration. It will happen June 3 at BCIT campus in Burnaby (a suburb of Vancouver). Go to www.kenlowkungfu.com for further info.

Hi there if you are interested in Kung Fu performance in Vancouver you should check out Vancouver Chinatown Night Market website event page: http://www.vcma.shawbiz.ca/events.htm

I believe the performances are:

1) July 1st - Kin Fung School and Guest Clubs
2) Aug 5th - Western Canada
3) ....I don't remember the date....it's by Wushu BC

Hope this help...by the way the shows are free at the Night Market.

Ken Low's tournament is $18 just to watch...but some may say you get what you pay for.

AH HA! you missed at least one more club's website.

50. Shung Ying Choy Lay Fat Richmond - Paul Tam (student of Hilbert Yiu) http://www.clfcanada.com

it is strange I am promoting another club but I feel strongly that everyone should have all the choices presented to them before making a choice. I have personally looked at many places before I accidently found the best (in my opinion) for me.

Also a list should be complete as possible. One more thing I thought Kenneth Liu was teaching at Chinese Freemasons?

Northernshaolin,

Sorry buddy I didn't know about it until recently and wasn't when to let people know about it. But since firepalm mentioned it...I might as well try to promote it.

We try to keep it really basic but luckily enough we had a student that design webpages for a living!!!

What do you think?

Sorry for late reply, I've been busy with some other things.

But thank you for the list of schools. Initially I was trying to find someone teaching one of the lesser known styles of Wing Chun (not the YipMan or the YuenKaySan systems). But it seems a little difficult.

Has anyone heard anything about the Freemason's Athletic Association? I passed by there once, and it sounded interesting.

Yuen Kay Shan Wing Chun is about the 900 Block of East Hastings in the Lower East Side of Vancouver, taught by Sifu Tsui Siu Ming from China. Very knowledgable.

Fred Kwok is also good for conventional HK Wing Chun (www.tigerwingchun.com)

For more info on Wing Chun go to either Dragon Martial Arts Supplies (www.dmacanada.com) in Chinatown or Kuen Way on Victoria Dr. (www.kuenway.com) either can give you loads more info on Wing Chun in Vancouver.

Freemasons an old long established Vancouver branch of the society coming from China & South East Asia. Style taught is Choy Lee Fut by Kenneth Liu from the Shung Ying School (long time student of Sifu Hilbert Yiu).

Hope this helps.

I could be wrong but I believe Yu Shan Association teaches a village nonYipMan wing chun.

I personally not sure what you are looking for so maybe if you want to tell us what kind of style or school you are interested maybe we can point you in the right direction???

Personally style and school can vary depending on who is teaching it.

hello

I am looking for a style with a few core forms that I can practice repeatedly. So I am looking for a school or an instructor to teach me Wing Chun. I have learned a nonYip Man style before and tried to continue learning Wing Chun in Vancouver from some Yip Man and Yuen Kay San styles, but I find it a little different. So I'm trying to find a school that is one of the lesser known ones, preferably a softer style.

If anyone has any info, please feel free to PM away.

Thank you

I won't profess that I am an expert on his brand of Northern Shaolin but he does have a farily successful school that has been around in Vancouver for quite sometime. His students seem good, I have seen them at several demos as well as local competitions (which they seem to be reasonably successful at).

Sifu Marquis Lung from my very limited exposure to him seems like a very sincere & positive gentleman. He also works, I believe, as a high school councilor for troubled youth.

If you are interested in Northern Shaolin there are also other teachers in Vancouver such as Danny Ma (son of Ma Kinfung) @ www.kinfungkungfu.com as well as Jun Ng @ www.northernshaolin.ca both are reputable instructors. A classmate of Sifu Marquis Lung can also be found in the Richmond area named Eric Lui (sorry don't have web address).

Hope this helps! :)

NShaolin,

Just so you know...4:22mins into the video is a student of Marquis Lung doing a fan set. This particular student is one of Marquis Lung's strongest in my opinion, and a fan might be fattering consider the power he is capable of while the fan is more of a soft swift weapon.

Awesome video thank you so much!!! Did you compete at the tournament?

I didn't get a chance to go but I would love to see more clips if possible. Thx!

Yes actually I was there in 05, I took two silvers one in forms and one in fighting.
My Brother is Sifu Josh Schafer a disciple of Jonh Funk's, he invited me to join him and it was a great time. I'll be back again this year with any luck.

I'm from the Bak Hsing Kwoon (Bak Hsing Fut Gar) my Sifu and SiGung are actually both from Vancouver and I like to get out there when I can. Unfortunatley I'm starving student,,,

Bak Hsing Kwoon...is that like Buk Sing CLF....I think I've seen some vids of you guys doing both CLF and Shaolin sets right?

I will try and have some vid of myself up after newyears, I'm nursing a sore knee right now. But Sihing and I are supposed to do braodsword vs. spear at the Banquet in town.

Glad you liked the vids, like I said there will be more coming when I can find time in between homework(s)

Yes in our family (Bak Hsing Fut Gar) of Bak Hsing Kwoon (Bak Hsing CLF) we play traditional CLF sets without any high kicking and we play a whole littany of differnt long fist shaolin. In our lineage we have both systems directly from Tam Sam and Master Ku.

Getting to gether would be great, you should try and make the tournament this year, even just as a volunteer. Its hardly like working, and is one hell of a gung fu weekend. I would love to see how you play your shaolin.
