Whats the difference between a master and a sifu.

well in the world of kung fu where ppl are prostituting their style

its easy to become a sifu in some schools. but to be a master, takes many many more years.

u maybe an instructor/teacher/'sifu' of a school but ur not a master of the actual art.

and dont try to be smart and say 'oh but doesnt sifu in cantonses mean master/teacher?' i bloody hell know wat it means, but alot of ppl abuse the word sifu now and can call themselves one after 2 years by juss paying their way thru. coz the master of the style wants to prostitue his art and franchise it everywhere

you all know wat im talking bout

the terms are meant to be mutually interchangeable.

master is however not something one would declare themselves to be anymore than they can declare themselves sifu.

in a literal sense they are unrelated.

sifu means teacher/father and is used as such in context of confucian filial piety which is also strongly associated with chinese culture, hierarchical structure in organizations from family to tongs to triads.

sifu is supposed to be your teacher who has a father like role.

master is someone who is proficient at a very high level in whatever endeavour they chose.
