ok so my dr says i partially dislocated my knee while i was doing a form 2 weeks ago. this prevented me from competing in a tournament that weekend and has stopped me from training. It is find when i pivot on it or when i straighten it out but when i bend it is hurts really bad. i re-hurt it tying my shoe the other day and it seems like the knee cap is not set in the right place. when i bend my knee it has an extra lump to the left of the patella. i am wondering if it might just be bc of swelling . the knee is clearly looser than normal but again my doc said when it swells it does that bc its being pushed up off the joint just slightly. anyway it cant support my weight if i squat down on it.

so i guess the questions are
1. how long does it usually take for something like this to heal?
2. is it possible it is healing in the wrong place? or would it be a lot more painful if that were the case?

Is your doctor an orthopedic surgeon? If not, you should see one.

agreed. Go see a surgeon.

As far as how long a dislocated joint takes to heal. Plan on about 8 weeks or longer to get back to 100%. I have one of those neoprene knee sleves with the hole in the front. The idea of the hole is for your knee cap to fit through so it stays in the correct position.

The knee sleeve gives good support while healing but don't let it become a crutch.

good luck.

Please don't listen to such foolish advice. DO NOT SEE A SURGEON! They are so drastic that they move right to surgery. I have never seen someone recover from knee surgery.

Are you located in New York? If you are please go see Tom Bisio or Marshal Wood at their acupuncture clinic in NYC. Private message me and I will give you their contact information. You've got nothing to lose if you're already planning surgery. A dumb bone specialist dumb dumb told my brother he need surgery on BOTH his knees to realign his knee caps. This freaked my brother to the point of tears. I took him to see Marshal Wood and we found out that his knee alignment was not bad at all. After this he went to the foot doctor, got orthodics and now life is great for his knees.

Orthopedic surgeons cause nothing but problems. Surgery should only be used as a last resort or in emergency situations such as a bullet wound.

Send me a private message.

Like anything else, it depends on the surgeon. I tore my medial meniscus and tore my ACL. To the best of my knowledge, acupuncture isn't going to "fix" either one of those injuries. ACLs don't mend. Cartilage sometimes does, but only if it's torn along the edges where there's a blood supply.

My OS quite honestly told me that people can opt to live with a torn ACL. And that the decision was mine as to whether or not I have it reconstructed. However, living with a torn ACL means, in most cases, not doing some of the more demanding athletic activities - such as skiing, soccer, and parts of MAs. Because of the latter and because certain MA actitivities were causing me to crash and burn, I chose to have mine reconstructed (about six weeks ago).

Prior to my MRI which clearly showed that my cartilage and ACL were torn, I was seeing a chiropractor for some neck issues. I told him about my knee issues, and he took a look at it (just visually - no xrays or MRI) and told me my ACL was just stretched - not torn. Well, he was wrong. Sometimes modern medicine isn't all bad.

As always, if an OS recommends radical stuff, then get a 2nd or 3rd opionion. In my case, my OS was my 2nd opinion. He was also someone I've gone to for other MA injuries, including a severe shoulder injury, and two severly jammed fingers (I thought they were broken). In both of those cases he sent me home and told me all I needed was time. No surgery. So, he's someone I trust.

Also, for what it's worth, my OS specializes in sports injuries.

Dude, I've been in to see an orthopedic twice for two separate issues and both times he recommended rest and Physical therapy. Foolish is making a decision with out all of the information. The first thing an orthopedic doc will do after they listen to your description of the problem is send you in for Xrays. After that they will either make a recommendation for treatment or send you in for an MRI. This is called, finding out the facts.

By all means acupuncture will work great in the area of rest and PT but all the acupuncture needles in the world won't repair a torn tendon.

Find out all the facts then make a decission.

Blindly writing off an orthopedic sugeon when you don't have all the facts would be the foolish thing to do here.

Allow me to ammend my origional post. I still stick by my idea of seeing someone at Tom Bisio's clinic.

Acupuncture is just ONE of the many treatments at his clinic. He specializes in sports medicine. There's tuina massaging and BONE SETTING. There are external and internal herbal formulas that help mend broken bone, tendons, muscles.

I reccomend finding out what exactly is wrong through x-rays and an mri and then seeing someone at the clinic. Western medicine is very limited on what it can do for SPORT related injuries. Eastern medicine, however, was developed with the knowledge that one doesn't have time to sit around all day and wait for limbs to heal. There's work to be done, children to be fed. Therefore they kept at it and developed methods that far surpass western medicine.

Please go see someone at this clinic.

Physical therapy can make injuries worse.

I'll email you the info, Bruce.
