All I'm looking for is some CMA some school that spars often with contact.

I've found one kung fu place in toronto that apparently trains and competes in san shou, the Hong Luck Kung Fu Club. http://www.hongluck.org/sanshou-training.html

Discuss?

I cannot answer if his students compete or not. However, he is a real fighter and one of the most respected people in Gong Fu today. He used to have a website but it is down now. Try looking in the phonebook or asking around the MA community in the Ontario area.

There's a san shou club on sheppard avenue at victoria park. Upstairs, next to the hasty market, behind the country style donuts. :) You can get there by subway (the sheppard line) and take a bus a few stops east to vic park.

Double Dragon does kickboxing, gets into tournaments and so on.

Hong Luck is the oldest kf school in toronto (teaching people from outside the community). There are likely a couple of members from that club who post here.

Sunny Tang martial arts does a bunch of different stuff.

waterloo is far away, if you're in the TO area, it's not really worth the trip because it's an hour or two away depending on traffic.

I live up in Markham, there are a few MT and BJJ and mma schools around scarborough. Quite a few choices. if you want to mix it up with us, we have a good group of guys and we play all the ranges and go as hard as you would agree upon and no one will et angry if you pop em in the nose or something.

One thing you should consider is that you cannot compete in full contact fighting in Ontario and if you want to do that, then you have to go to quebec.

If you want to mix it up a little, then you can do that, just don't expect any tournaments geared towards ufc type matches here in Ontario. Our premiere is too much of a girly little retard to allow it and we'll have to wait til a non nanny state supporter takes his office away.

Drop me a line when you get here, or by all means, go through the internet or phone book, not a lot of places are underground.

Hey David,

Thank you for the response, it was just what I was hoping for! It's good to know there's more than one san shou school in toronto.

I've compiled a little list of places I want to check out that I'll post at the end of this post. I don't have any knowledge of the geography of Ontario yet so I'm going to see what I -can- visit when I arrive.

Oh, and I might just have to take you up on your invitation. ;) Would you mind if I asked for your e-mail? Just PM it to me or something if you wish. I've personally been involved with a kung fu school that does a lot of hung gar/crane with a mix of kickboxing for about five years. I've been out of the game for a year but I'm looking forward to a fresh start in a new school. I left my old kwoon because it went from having a good balance of forms/sparring to only focusing on forms. There was other reasons as well but I'd rather not talk about it on a public message board. I've kind of let myself go lately but I know with some hard work I can be back in shape in a few months.

And yeah, maybe someone should punch the premiere in the nose. How long has that law been enforced? I heard a rumor that our premiere was trying to pull that BS here in new brunswick but I made a phone call and it was just that, a rumor.

Anyways, thanks again for the response.

Haha, I just had to share this. I have had this old video entitled "chrisfreestyle.mpg" for a few years in my collection and I had absolutely no idea where I got it from. I've shared it to a few people when I burned over my collection for friends and I've been asked a few times where I found it.

Well, of course I didn't know but I was just checking out your website David and I found the video! http://www.davidjamieson.com/kunglek/klkf/olvids.htm

Oh, and since it wouldn't be fair for me to see videos of you without you seeing videos of me, here you go: http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=35666

Yeah that vid of Chris has probably made a lot of people look at their dummy work. :p He's pretty fluid.

I can't remember my name and password at bullshido, it's been a while since i been there.

But anyway, I'm always up for hooking up with other martial artists, bangers, whatever. :p

Right now i study with a guy from wong cheung black tiger style on a weekly basis and now and then others drop in and give the workout a whirl.
My email is on my site. Just click the link at the bottom of the page and go to contact. That'll get me.

I made a few clips of me throwing a jab & cross and a left and right round house to see what bad habits I might have. There are plenty, of course, so I decided to post them here for you to critique them.

I've been out of the game for a good half a year and have just returned to kung fu to get in shape for a mma and muay thai gym I have my eyes on for when I move this september.

Round house kicking, left and right:
http://dustin.quickfry.com/bagwork/DSCF0594.AVI
http://dustin.quickfry.com/bagwork/DSCF0592.AVI
I generally just let my hands go however they please when I throw a kick. It seems to help me throw the kick in some very odd sort of way, probably a psychological thing. I see a lot of kickboxers doing this but it does seem to be a form of telegraphing. Does anyone kick with their hands stationary, or perhaps cover up their head? I've tried both but I always seem to end up doing what's in the videos and the kicks still have a decent probability of contact.

Also when you're throwing a round house with your lead leg do you usually step in the direction of your kick before you throw it? I find it helps with power.

Jab and cross combo:
http://dustin.quickfry.com/bagwork/DSCF0595.AVI
Ugh, this is horrible! I never knew I dropped my lead so much when I went for a cross. The retraction of my cross seems all right, though.

Edit: fixed the links.
Why am I still getting the ten character limit error!?

cool clips.

lets hook up and train when you get here.

Sounds good, and you'll also get the good fortune of laughing at my current level of conditioning. I'm thinking of doing some interval work for these next few weeks before I move.

David Jamieson
08-09-2006, 09:03 AM
your conditioning will get better. I find that working with others really helps.

Cal, warmup
timed rounds on the bag.
numbered counts on the kick pads.
numbered counts and free flow on the mitts.
rolling.
sparring.
drilling.
empty hand and weapon forms.

That's pretty much how it goes here. theory is about 2 minutes before going into the doing of stuff. we self correct for the most part based on teh reality of what's happening.

sometimes we'll pull stuff from a dvd and work it.
sometimes we go a little easier.

It all depends, everyone has something to bring and we all exchange pretty freely as far as method and so on go. Could always use another guy in the mix. We don't charge anything.

everyone is at least intermediate or advanced level. not really any flailers in the bunch and some guys have wicked skeelz.

anyway, that's the lowdown on what goes on here.

Sounds good! I'm excited about this. So am I right when I assume this is a training group I'm going to be visiting and not a school? I actually tried to form a group a year ago but sadly there wasn't enough interest.

So I'm going to be living in Etobicoke, ON. Google maps is telling me they are about 34km apart, does that sound right to you?

Also, given my schedule (school + work) it looks like I could train with you guys over the weekend if I take a bus or something while training in a closer school during the week. What is your groups schedule?

David Jamieson
08-09-2006, 10:13 AM
hey, yep, it's a group and not a school. although, a lot of us approach it as a school like thing. :)

group size varies depending on schedules and such, but wednesday night is always group night.

and yes, etobicoke is on the other end of town. you got wheels?
There's a couple of freeways that cut across and through the city that cut travel time quite a lot.

weekend training at the beach would be cool, although im not certain guys would commit weekends consistently. weekday evenings seem to work for everyone and it's a good recharge for the week.

im sure even if it's not a steady thing, it's something that is beneficial.

The only wheels I'll have is a bicycle. The rest I'll have to travel by bus. Since I'm a student I've had to cut some expenses and the luxury of a car was one of them.

Groups are always fun to train in, I'm looking forward to it.
