Hi guys,

Just started running again and loaded my Mp3 player up with some sounds to run too.

Just got me thinking about music and training in general. Does any one train their martial arts to music (either in class or otherwise)?

Is this generally frowned upon or does it raise the tempo and get you training harder?

What music are you listening too?

Any thoughts….

At my school the music that does get played is more traditional sounding chinese music. The flute, whatever that stringed instrument is and drums. To me it seems like it is there more to eliminate awkward silence than anything else.

I don't sue music when I train for the simple reason it is just one more distraction taht I don't need when i'm trying to focus and do.

music rules in the school

the rythm of course has to be key in your selection.

metal works
as does ska
and reggae too
hot jazz can fuel
and mellow ambient soothe

What kind of metal? I would imagine if the wrong stuff was played that most would just be distracted by it.

Pantera and old Megadeth (peace sells, Holy wars era)

if music distracts you from martial practice then forget about fighting with whatever dance you are practicing.

one of my favorites to play while training is Helmet's first album, Meantime.

FTR, I'm not a metal head...I like a lot of different music...

Ok, list your favorite albums to listen to while training. no need for order or anything.

Helmet - Meantime

hmmm...drawing a blank now...a lot of what I listen to is stuff I've burned.

the last big burn project was when I got the copy of Bass Player mag that had the top 50 punk songs with the most memorable bass lines. so, I set about finding them (this was before all the PTP sites got shut down) and I have about 30 of those songs on two cds that are pretty cool to train too. If you have never heard the bass solo in Rancid's "Maxwell Murder" then go kill you mother and ransack her purse and go buy it.....

"Maxwell Murder"

Maxwell can't tell he's in hell
he just wants you to visit him there
same old game that he's playin'
his rules are never fair

nobody want to look back everybody wanna get high tonight
before they run outta time where's the felon the chargible
felon the name of the crook who committed the crime

dial 999 if you really want the truth
dial 999 if you can't see it through
he ain't jack the ripper he's your ordinary crook
calling maxwell murder for you

maxwell got a hand in his plan
he knows who you are in this plan
chop the rock before you bought it
sick maxwell knows you got it

nobody want to look back everybody wanna get high tonight
before they run outta time where's the felon the chargible
felon the name of the crook who committed the crime

dial 999 if you really want the truth
dial 999 if you can't see it through
he ain't jack the ripper he's your ordinary crook
calling maxwell murder for you

Music while training is great, sets a great mood in a class and helps the learning process.

Its not a distraction but rather an enhancer :)

Could not agree more Oso!!!

...just remembered...my mp3 player mostly has Marcus Miller on it right now...that's what I'm riding my bike to.

i do have one style of music I hate to listen to: anything from the 60's, 70's or 80's that call's itself 'rock'...my old teacher would play a radio station that was all classic rock and it just generally doesn't jive with me...there are notable exceptions like some Queen and Led Zeppelin...but generally classic rock just needs to be piped in to old folks homes where it belongs. :)

and the song I listen to when training sucks and i'm realizing i'm not 25 anymore:

kinda sounds like i'm depressed or something but this song gives me inspiration.
It's ska, if you don't know who Goldfinger is.

Goldfinger's "Superman"

"Superman"

So here I am
doing everything I can
holding on to what I am
pretending I'm a superman

I'm trying to keep
the ground on my feet
it seems the world's
falling down around me

The nights are all long
I'm singing this song
to try and make the answers
more than maybe

And I'm so confused
about what to do
sometimes I want
to throw it all away

So here I am
growing older all the time
looking older all the time
feeling younger in my mind

And here I am
doing everything I can
holding on to what I am
pretending I'm a superman

I'm trying to sleep
I lost count of the sheep
my mind is racing faster
every minute

What could I do more
yeah I'm really not sure
I know I'm running circles
but I can't quit

And I'm so confused
about what to do
sometimes I want
to throw it all away

Controlling everything in site
I'm feeling weak
I don't feel right
you're telling me
I have to change
telling me to act my age
but if all that I can do
is just sit and watch time go
then I'll have to say good-bye
life's too short to watch it fly
to watch it fly

So here I am
growing older all the time
looking older all the time
feeling younger in my mind

And here I am
doing everything I can
holding on to what I am
pretending I'm a superman

I play music when I do san shou training by myself. Fave at the moment is Combichrist – get your body beat, Peoples Republic of Europe – the train – and paul gadsby – Hostile (pantera remix).

Seems like this forum is filled with rockers and metal heads. Gmph .. someone need to start educating you guys on good music

are you there to train or to listen to music?
lol

it's just "one more distraction" didn't say it was detrimental, just not necessary.
one could say that if you need that emotional push from music then your will is weak. and will beats skill everytime.

I don't do Kung Fu, but I study Tai Chi. We listen to classical Chinese music during class. I admit that for beginners it is useful because it helps you keeping the right times. I think tho that in the future, when my forms will be well learnt the music might bother me coz distract from the internal part of my Martial Art.

On the other hand tho it might even be a good training on how to close your mind to external distraction...I don't know, when I will be more advanced I will see :)

char-

my advice. take it or leave it.

do not close your mind to the external, but instead, let it wash over you and maintain your focus on what you do.

closing of the mind will impede.
