How do people from the various schools of tai chi, ba gua, or hsing-i measure the length of their sabers/dao?
Probably with a tape measure.

But seriously, if you hold the weapon in the preparatory position (as in the straightsword with the little finger and thumb on the guard and the blade flat on the forearm or the broadsword with the guard in your palm and the arms relaxed at your side...the top of the blade should be no lower than the bottom of your ear and no higher than the top of your ear.
