I just joined a gym in NYC (Crunch, 38th Street) and know little about the right way to work out. I hope to start training in some type of TCMA in awhile from now ($$) but in the meantime what is a good program for 4-5 days a week, 60-80 minutes at a stretch? This could include a cardio machine (elliptical I guess) plus weights and the punching bags, jump rope etc that they have there.

Check out the training hard thread and you can get an idea of what I do. I'm not saying that what I do is better than anyone else's routines, but it works for me. Of course, I'm a training fanatic so you may not want to follow my program. There's tons of programs out there, but honestly, if your goal is to get in shape for traditional cma, I would focus on cardio, core training and bodyweight exercises. I could help you out if I knew exactly what your goals are (what kind of shape you want to be in and what area you're trying to focus on. ie forms, fighting, etc.) and what type of shape you're currently in.

the rowing machine or elliptical machine for cardio? I hate running, man.

Don't limit yourself to one. Use both. If possible, use an elliptical with the arm attachments as opposed to one without. Other good choices are a step mill, versa-climber, and the good old stationary bike (airdyne if available).

I agree. If your not going to run and you choose to utilize machines instead, you definitly want to use machines that incorporate both arms and legs.

- running, an acquired taste.
