Anyone familiar with this fungus based protein source? A veggie friend of mine is eating over and brought this as the protein.

did a little research:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quorn

http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,51842,00.html

the RNA/DNA thing seems simple enough to eliminate and it's only a possible cause of gout...haven't found anything to say there are major issues with eating it as compared to soy. it was tested for 10 years in Europe before being allowed on the common market.

still, fungus????

i'll let ya'll know how it tastes in a couple of hours

It is sold in the UK under the brandname "Quorn". We used to eat it until my wife developed an allergic reaction to it: stomachache.

that article on wired.com is a bit negative. like 'england' and 'europe' is some far off primitive land hahaha. and oh god no i dont wanna eat FUNGUS thats gross hahaha. quorns been about for 10 years sold in all the supermarkets etc, even a few restaurants.

anyway ive been eating it and know a lot of other people whove been eating it for years, so its no big deal.

less dodgy sideeffects to eating too much soy i think. anyway all meat substitutes are a lazy way of eating, much better to get real vegetables in :)

ps the tastiest fake meat ive EVER had was at a chinese pub/restaurant in malvern near birmingham. yummm :)

it tasted ok. more meatlike than anything soy I've eaten.

one of the articles did say that some people would be allergic to it just like some people are to shellfish, peanuts, etc.

I'm going to fry some leftovers up like sausage in the morning.
