A mate posed me the above question.

There are thousands of styles out there, some more "mainstream" than others, some more practical, some more esoteric.

So what are people's thoughts as to the the craziest/strangest/wierdest kungfu style out there? and why?

I think the runny/screamy/bashy style is pretty weird.

or the flailing/flipping/flexing style is weird as well.

anyway, that's all just outward appearance, the real weirdness is when completely unorthodox stuff works. and not just cause it's a surprise.

now that's weird!

Most of the styles are with apparent moves or direct and straightforward.

The surprise ones.

1. Ba Gua: walk away from the front and back.

2. Mantis: with many hidden hands and feet or (Yin Shou or An Shou) also many hidden power/Jin. the varied and ever changing hand methods.

When I was a kid, some guy told me there was a spider style in Chinese gong fu, that was really acrobatic and effective. If that were true, it would be cool. Also, if those wild monkey styles work in actual combat, then you've got one there.

My vote goes to the little kid doing a crab-esque style about 4 minutes in... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g57G3BDYcQ0 . Man, I forgot how weird that vid was. If the kung fu in there isn't the weirdest thing ever, I think that music is...

The first player did an imitative monkey routine. Though I enjoy watching these routines for the acrobatics, I cringe to think that someone might equate this with true Monkey Boxing.

What was so weird about that? it looked like a basic Southern form to me. I am thinking some sort of Southern Tai Tzu Quan, or Five Ancestor's Fist?

The guy right before the midget in the orange body suit is really weird... Look at 3:28. Hes just twirling around with his fingers all flaired out. It looks like some sort of modern dance routine. The others are ok, (except maybe the guy with the shovel), but I have no idea what that guy is doing...

Realistically the weirdest one I've seen is Iron Crotch? Where they hang weights on your ding dong.

I agree with Duck Kung Fu. There was actually supposed to be a Chinese Master who was a royal family guard, and he was supposed to be quite good, who mastered this style. I saw it in a cheesy Kung Fu flick, and it was hilarious.

I understand there is a Dog Kung Fu. I'd love to see that one.:)

There is a video of a boy in a light blue uniform. He does the whole form basically in a crouched position, basically just lifting up his elbows.

I translated the character to mean Conch Fist (shell fish fist)

On the "China's Living Treasures" Video Series where i saw an obscure kung fu style based on the TURTLE. I think it was Dragon Turtle Kung fu. Anyway it looked pretty weird when i saw it. Was kinda cool.

Hope everyone had a decent Turkey Day,,,,,TWS

I've seen Dog, Toad, Turtle, Scorpion and Duck live. We even ran an article on Dog back in our last Shaolin Special (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=590) - Shaolin Dog Boxing: An Interview with Master Zaipei Lin By Chen Pengcheng. It drew a lot of positive feedback since Dog Boxing is one of the few TCMA styles that has ground fighting. I also thought it was interesting to have it alongside Craig Reid's Unleashed: Jet Li’s Finally Barking Up the Right Tree (sort of a Danny the Dog in-joke, but no one but us publishers ever notice that.)

The weird animals are all fairly rare. There's probably some root techniques in some of the renditions, but nowadays, it's mostly for show. Shaolin performances have increased the popularity of these styles because they are always sure-fire crowd pleasers. I find that amusing, a strange mutation in the social Darwinism of traditional arts. Another classic that falls into this category is 'broom' fighting. Broom fu is fairly popular as a Shaolin demo form now. This is really ironic since as weapons go, broom would be fairly practical nowadays. There was a whole slew of modern day weapons sets that were created for the Chicoms just before the Cult Rev - sickle, yoke, sledgehammer, et.al. - sort of akin to the Okinawan farm weapons, but tooled towards everyday appliances in the PRC in the 60's. Broom actually has a longstanding history, so it's nice to see it revitalized at Shaolin, even though it's mostly performance.

Mark Saltzman, author of Iron and Silk, once told me he witnessed a flea style. I've never found any evidence to back that, but I don't doubt him on it.

Recently, some DVD company produced a DVD entitled "Jet Li and the Legend of Wong Fei Hong".....how could I resist?

It's a double DVD, and in it, there's this one called "Jet Li, the early years." It's basically just this cheesy WuShu documentary from the early 70's, or something. Anyway, Jet Li's in it for like ten minutes tops, and it's two hours long. It definitely didn't go by the name of the DVD back then, so it's probably been hijacked for marketing. Anyway, in it you can see dog style (called earth dragon, or ground dragon), and some old guy doing duck style, and all sorts of stuff. It's a compendium of weird styles.

But if you ask me, GM Sin The of Shaolin-Do has to take the cake on weird styles. He purports to teach the "Golden Roaches." Oh, you thought mantids were fierce? You ever seen a ****ed off ****roach?

Yeah, I'm SD, but I might have to take that one with a grain of salt....:D

When I was still taking TKD classes, The other black belts(with the exception of Master Wiles) and I decided to see which of us could come up with the weirdest animal stances/styles and use them against the lower belts during free sparring. The Three of us came up the following styles.

Jason - frogitsu - crouch down and randomly hop while yelling 'BONZIA' with every punch thrown

Stephen - duck tails - Stephen got down into an extremle low horse stance, and just flailed his arms.

and mine was - Gerbil Fu- bring your hands up to your chest with the index and the middle finger pointing down. then move your hands up and down about a 6 inch distance realy fast, while just jumping around and ocasionaly throwing a cresecnt kick.

BTW: I know gerbils dont fight but i thought the name would add to its idiocy. ;)
