it's based on this guy Giordano who is from So. America - he combines shotokan, Japanesesword, "ba gua" and gim / jian, plus probably other stuff - they have chain schools all over the place - very McDojo / McKwoon, and big on internal consistency - they send out traveling "masters" all the time to make sure the teachings are uniform...

I have never seen anything of worth demonstrated by their practitioners

It is not a form of baguazhang.

I think that's obvious to many.
So, the name is a misnomer to be sure.

baguazhang looks more like this:

Would you believe that in NYC, a city full of TCMA, these guys have like 5 or 6 schools full of students? :o

I got a better one, YEARS ago, like 20 years ago, they were calling what they did "Tai Chi"

When "tai Chi" got more mainstream they changed to "Pa Kua"....

It shows that there are many people out there who will buy into ANYTHING

Well this is Very easy to Answer. Most people dont even know what Bagua IS. Hell most people dont even really know what TCMA(kung fu) is. So Schools like this will just do what they want and talk whatever game they want and sound convincing and rely on the ignorance and gullability of most others who could care less about what they are learning to begin with. Because to most people who join a martial arts school, it isnt about anything other than wanting to stay fit or learn how to kick a$$(and there is nothing wrong with that). But for guys like US who HAVE a deeper knowledge base of what Bagua is and what TCMA is we can scoff at these vids and at schools like that one.

Japanese weapons period...

I have a question, why do so many Japanese schools want to pass themselves off as Chinese Kung Fu, but you NEVER see a Chinese school try to be Japanese?

Seriously, have you ever seen, say a Long Fist school, pretend it was Karate, but actually teach Long Fist?

You see CMA schools in karate gi and with "black belts".... you see schools that name their style in a combo of Chinese and Japanese (atemi chi do for example?). There is no "market" on stuff like this.... though I suspect that the trend may be influenced by the Bruce Lee/Kung Fu the TV show/Shaw Brothers trends....

I dont think anyone has forgotten SD and it's relavence to this thread,HOWEVER, Keeping the SD thread to the actual SD thread in the shaolin section of this forum is by far a good idea.
Last i checked, this thread is not about SD.;) :p :D

Yes, that is true. I think many of those started out as Karate schools though, and the owners got into the Chinese arts after they were well established. Some do it because of marketing reasons, they are doing good, and don't want to rock the boat.

I have NEVER seen a Chinese school that "Claimes" they teach, say, Shotokan Karate, but in reality teaches Bagua, or Louhan, or Long Fist, or Hsing I, or Hung Gar, or Cai Li Fo....

Good call.

I am a grammar, spelling and punctuation proofreading specialist, so that is one of the many "flags" for me when it comes to determining validity.

(of course, there is translation and syntax to be accounted for, but for those who don't know any better, they are the ones who are preyed upon for opportunity)

Gene, got a job for me?
