Hi everyone,
I first witnessed some Wing Chun used in the "Star Wars Clone Wars" cartoon.
The episode where Mace Windu loses his light saber, and must fight hand to hand
with an army of robots. This cartoon was made by the same people as
the cartoon "Samurai Jack". I figured there must be someone on staff that
trains in wing chun, but I didn't know who.
I got Season 3 of Samurai Jack on DVD, and was pleasantly surprised when
Samurai Jack gets attacked by 2 Shaolin monks in a dense forest somewhere, and saw some definate wing chun poses and the use of PAK SAO/PUNCH. Again, I figured there MUST be someone training in wing chun that works as an animator on that show.
In the Special Features section of disc 2, there are a few documentaries , including one named "The Martial Arts of Samurai Jack".
As I began to watch it, I was happy to find out that the animator is a good friend
of Sifu Eric Oram in L.A. (Grandmaster Cheung lineage). The animator was wearing a T-shirt from Sifu Oram's school . It wasn't clear if he is a student of Sifu Oram since he referred to Sifu Oram as his friend; instead of his Sifu.
The animator, I forget his name (apologies) has studied Wu Shu for many years, and felt it important to properly represent many great kung fu styles including wing chun into the Samurai Jack cartoon.
I would've been happy to see any wing chun sifu in the documentary, but it was especially cool to see he is from my lineage.
A Wu Shu master got to talk and show some northern and southern styles, and Sifu Eric Oram got a chance to show a lot of wing chun dummy and two-man sequences. Neat.
Great work on the cartoon; all you Samurai Jack cartoonists out there !
