I have been keeping this log elsewhere, but I would like to start keeping it here. I am going to copy and paste the old posts from the place I used to keep it. From now on I will only post it here. I would like any feedback others have in regards to Judo/the log. I will try to find a site that illustrates the grappling techniques the same way www.judoinfo.com illustrates the judo techniques.

Background: Just switched from TMA to more sports based martial arts about a year and a half ago. Prior to December (graduation) I had no time to train at a martial arts school. Now that I belong to a martial arts school (and also train with the University of Pittsburgh Grappling Club) I want to record my progress and learning.

Places I train
www.southhillsjudo.org
http://www.pitt.edu/AFShome/s/o/sorc/public/html/bjjclub/
http://www.pitt.edu/AFShome/s/o/sorc/public/html/grappling/
The latter two I will generically label "Pitt Grappling Club"

At the South Hills Judo Club there are various teachers for Judo. There will be an instuctor profile page on their website soon. The BJJ instuctor is Bobby Palumbi (http://onthemat.com/wiki/index.php/Bobby_Palumbi_%28Phil_Migliarese%29)
He also teaches at Pitt sometimes. There are other teachers at Pitt also.

The style of this log is inspired by one of my teachers, Jimmy. He keeps the most detailed and informative accounts of everything he learns. I really feel it's useful for training the mind.

12/13
Went to my first Judo class at www.southhillsjudo.org
it was great! I also got a gi. So Class went:
Warm Up

Randori

Technique
worked on transitioning from failed techniques to other attacks.
tomoe nage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/tomoenage.htm) that failed into an ankle pick and drop opponent to the side.
kata garuma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/kataguruma.htm) failed to something that looked like a double leg takedown.

when opponent bends knees to avoid get thier left ankle with your right hand and thier right ankle with your left, spread their legs and drive backwards.
We also did some weird choke that I didn't like very much.
In randori I actually met an old friend of mine there who is a black belt. We were paired up, he took it pretty easy on me and showed me a few things.

In ippon seoi nage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm) while stepping in pull the sleeve grip back like looking at watch, other arm goes under the arm, bend at knees and get hip under his, you dont need to grab with the hand that is under the arm you are pulling. He also told me (and I should already know) not to cross feet during randori as it becomes easy for opponent to trip you up then.

12/15
went to Pitt's Panther Grappling Club
Judo:
uchi mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm):

I had trouble coordinating everything. Step in with right (not too far) left foot behind right kuzushi by pulling opponent forward while lifting them, get hip below theirs while staying not too bent, not too streight, lift up with the hip look to the other direction.
Then we did a technique i can't find or remember the japanese name, the english name is hand wheel. We did it as a counter to opponents uchi mata: opponent steps into uchi mata, grab leg material of gi scoop em up and drop them.
what I remember continued:
we also did rolling armbar from knees and standing.
*Armbar from side controll, hard to get with good opponent
*shrimp then bridge to create space to get your knee through
* both of these armbars were executed with one leg in the front of the opponent and the other in the armpit. we went over other things but I can't quite recall.
Free Rolling
I rolled with one guy I never rolled with before, we rolled a while, I got some sweeps, one out of the scarf hold (which is a problem for me) but he ended up getting me in a kneebar.

12/18
Went to the South Hills Judo Club. After warmups and ukemi went over
ouchi gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ouchigari.htm):

kazushi opponent downward, step in with right foot then bring left foot behind, reap with the right leg (by brining hips through) and take it to the ground. Then we did ouchi gari and the opponent moves their leg so we pivot right foot, step left foot behind towards opponent, pulling their arm across our chest and gripping their gi behind their head with other hand for uchi mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm):

Points to remember:Best to pull arm across high, get hips below opponents, scoop and look.

We did some other drills. One of the black belts (also named Scott, I don't know his last name) told me the basics of judo physics: If you want to throw them backwards, kazushi them on their heels, if you want to throw them forward, kazushi them on their toes.
No judo next week, I'm upset, then also no class the monday after.

1/4
went to south hills judo club after a pretty intense warm up we did ne waza, starting from different positions (turtle then guard) and then did a back to back free roll. I did okay, tapped to a collar choke once. I thought I was doing great because I got rear mount a few times, but that wasn't so great because it was judo and rear mount doesn't count for anything. After that we did drills with 10 fits then one throw for: Ogoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm) , osoto gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm), ippon seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm), and tani otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm)
then we worked a drill of okuriashi harai (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/okuriashiharai.htm) stepping three times to the side with uke, lifting them up each time, on the third stepturn hands like wheel and with a streight leg sweep through both feet right above the ankle.

After all of this Randori. I got one good ouchi gari
a higher belt gave me some advice "try to get inside controll". Will work on that in the future.

1/5
Went to Pitt grappling club. Did a ton of ab exercises at the beginning of class. Then went on to Judo. First went over Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm)
Kazushi arm grip (left side) down and RIght hand high on collar across (almost like hook punching their jaw) to get them on their right leg, then reap. Next was O Goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm) Pull opponent in get hips lower than uke by bending knees. Oh, and theres a step across in their somewhere. pop up and look around. On the ground covered americana and kimura from side controll.
Americana
After takedown in side controll, opponent trying to use elbow in hip to gain space, use hip to pin it down (kind of sprawl the hip on that arm). Use head to help leverage thier other arm down. after pinning the arm down, change grip if necessary, slide the other hand through, if it cannot go at the elbow then slide it through by the wrist and then down. To eliminate space have hand on top of hand, then take thier elbow towards thier hip (this makes it much tighter) and raise up. If they streighten the arm, get the thumb facing up, change grip one arm below the elbow to hyperextend (armbar effect).

Kimura from side controll. Opponent is grabbing accross you. Once again use head to help leverage down arm. ONe hand on top grabs his wrist, the other hand comes under his arm and figure four grip your own arm. step leg over head (or arch back) and drive the arm behind the opponent.

Sorry for my very poor descriptions.

Also rolled with three people
First person Long haired guy (don't remember his name he's also a white belt) I got 2 submissions via armbar.

Then rolled with Randy . He pretty much schooled me the whole time, but also gave me some advice. He had me in the scarf hold, I tried to bridge him over unsuccessfully, he told me immediately following the bridge to shrimp to the other side to create space and get legs through back to guard. He also told me in a rear naked, I was rolling the wrong way, use the hand as an arrow for the direction to roll into the guy.

Third person I don't remember his name also (I know he can speak spanish) neither of us had submissions. I spent a great deal of time in good positions and I attacked more.

1/8
went to south hills judo
Warm ups
Ne waza
frist drills to keep guard/pass guard
Collar chokes, GRAB DEEP both hands palm facing away or both hands palms facing in, or one and the other. For rear naked with a gi, slide fingers through deep along their neck and grab gi deep.
Learned a sweep.
pull opponent down in your guard, get your head to the outside, reach accross to grab his gi's back material, use one leg to trip his leg and the other to push on the other side (either push his leg over or push off)

Learned a guard pass
pin opponents right leg down with your left elbow/hand and raise their left leg up on your right shoulder, slide your head under and keep opponents left leg with your left arm (in this position if you grabbed the head its like a cradle) to prevent them from escaping.

Another idea for judo competition if you can't get past thier guard, slide out the back door (go back)
Uchi comi (spelling?)
I only did ogoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm) to try to get good at it. We could have done more throws during this practice if we wanted to. To improve my ogoshi I need to: Pull while stepping, remember to look at my watch (left hand) so that I'm pulling high enough, step both legs streight in between their legs, get low-my butt should be on their thigh. Then we did 10 actual throws.

Randori=me getting owned *a black belt saw someone turn into me without commitment, he told me to do osoto gari next time.
It was a very good class.

1/10
Went to Pitt Grappling Club and South Hills Judo
Pitt:
Went over how to shoot. 4 steps: 1 drop 2 penetrate 3 other leg 4 turn corner and drive. This was the first time I ever learned how to shoot properly. I didn't absorb it too well.

Then we went over ways to block a shot. 1 hands 2 forarms 3 sprawl.

Some ways to break posture of an opponent in your guard. 1 Do a crunch (move legs in) 2 grab the elbows and pull 3 arm drag 4 pulling the head.

Went over pendulum sweep with gift wrap (from guard). Two on one arm drag, sit up behind and hug opponent, with foot in hip angle as if attacking with armbar (to get the gift wrap when opponent pulls arm back get it), right arm under their left leg, swing your left leg up then down. The result is you in mount with the gift wrap (use your weight to keep it) pin opposite arm down with your knee. We acted like we were going for choke to armbar.

Then, from mount we used the giftwrap to get rear mount. Put right foot by opponents hip, go off to the side and roll below them, your hooks are basically in.

After the Pitt practice Frodo and I went to the South Hills Judo Club
Warm ups

Ne waza. Drills from turtle posistion.
On to walking Uchi Comi

I did O goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm) going backwards. I need to remember when pulling with the left hand to have it up and "look at the watch". I also need to bend my knees and get my hips really low.

For the forward walking uchi comi I did ouchi gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ouchigari.htm)Once again I need to get low.

On to Randori. I actually didn't get tossed too much. I blocked a few ippon attempts by just puttin all of my weight on their lower back, kind of sprawling, we both went down but I was on their backs (it happened with two people). I got two throws, weren't really judo though. The one I got a side body lock and picked the guy up and dropped him. The other I got one leg, lifted it in the air and sweeped the other. I'm just happy I wasn't completely owned.
1/11 - probably won't do anything due to working too much.

I haven't made it to the gym this week for any lifting. I am thinking about a program of conditioning rather than strength. I want to up my endurance for activities such as Judo and grappling. I want to keep weights as part of this, but I want to also be able to do my conditioning with just bodyweight if I can't make it to the gym for some reason. I'll keep this log posted with any details.

Nutrition wise I've been pretty good lately. Not eating so much sugar (no sugary treats at all) and trying to keep the eating clean. I've been buying skim milk and whole grain products when I can. I've been eating some fatty foods, like bacon, but nobodys perfect.

1/12
Went to Pitt Grappling Club, Bobby taught.
Scissors sweep.
Open guard and shrimp back a little. Grab his right sleeve with my left hand, grab his right lapel with my right hand, pull him back and onto my right leg (left leg on ground to block his right leg). Use scissor motion of legs for the sweep.

Americana
Grab collar (as if to go for choke) so opponent will block, press the arm down with the right hand. Pin arm down with left hand. slide the right hand under and get your grip. lower head down and move the elbow towards the hip. Raise to complete.

We did some X guard (http://www.grapplearts.com/X-Guard.htm) stuff but I just kept working the basics.

Rolled with three people.
Phil- completely owned me

Warren- beat me by positions, he constantly attacked and I managed to avoid all of the submissions.

Ryan- Submitted him once by armbar, controlled him the whole time.

1/15
Went to South Hills Judo Club
went over
Harai Goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/haraigoshi.htm)
if the opponent resisted then we went to
Ouchi Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ouchigari.htm)
Get them on one foot during kazushi. Use hip to circle leg through. Stay on balls of feet.

Randori- got some good throws and got thrown also. I got the same throws on everyone. Ouchi gari and Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm).

Groundwork. Bobby from the Pitt Grappling Club is now teaching BJJ at the South Hills Judo Club.
armbar from guard
1 Break down arm 2 foot in hip (not too wide) 3 leg across back (breaking them down) 4 swing leg over (thumb up, press knees together) 5 raise hips

from failed armbar to triangle

they pull arm out, grab gi around shoulder to secure them down. Get your left leg over the head. Push their arm accross. readjust your feet if you need to. Pull down head and raise hips.

From failed triangle to armbar.
they posture back. Push their head down and leg over.

This progression was from attacking their right arm, to the triangle, to the left arm.

Kimura (http://www.grapplearts.com/Kimura-Technique-1.htm) from guard.

Opponent is lazy or offbalanced so they post on the mat. Sit up reach over and grab opponents wrist. Reach over and figure 4 grip you own wrist. Get perpendicular to your opponent with one leg high on their back. Bend the elbow (can be greater than 90 degree angle) and push back. If you are perpendicular, keep theri hand on your thigh when beggining to extend.

We then did some ne waza randori.

Went to South Hills Judo.
Warm ups
Uchi Comi with

Seoi Nage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm)

Then Uchi Mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm)

We drilled both of those throws walking then stationary.
Uchi Mata tips: High pull, step deep, pull them to you, chest contact, grab gi behind head.

Ippon Seoi Nage tips: pull them to you, low hips, don't bend to far, don't get my shoulder in Uke's armpit trap his arm with my arm.

Ne Waza
review of what we did Monday (1/15) armbar to triangle to armbar.

After class did a circut of V ups, puch ups, and bw squats.

* I checked the book Kodokan Judo by Jigoro Kano out of the library. From the initial impression it doesn't seem all that great. If I learn anything from it I'll post it here.

definitely. there are 8 directions of offbalance, try to become proficient in one technique for each direction. kazushi is everything.

a proper shot is very technical and much harder than people tend to think. They always envision a tackle, which is nothing like a shot. Heck, mine SUCKS, and I am a pick up guy.

On to Randori. I actually didn't get tossed too much. for the ippon attempts, on a really hard, committed turn - and this applies for ippon, harai, and pretty much all other turning throws, I like to counter with a sacrifice throw called tani otoshi. It works like a charm for me. As for picking him up and dropping him, look up sukui nage, ushiro goshi and ura nage. Did it look like any of those?

Seven, thank you for all of the feedback! For the yellow we also have to know breakfalls and some other stuff, have a minimum number of hours met, and the instuctors need to agree you're ready.

1/20
Went to the South Hills Judo Club for a training session (not a formal class). Rich, Phil, Kimmy, Miguel, Kevin, and myself were there. We did Uchi Komi for Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm) and O goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm)

For Osoto Gari: This movement is at an angle, not streight back. Kazushi, pull right lapel grip towards uke's chin, left sleeve grip down, make chest contact (once again at an angle), Their weight should be on their right leg, right foot comes through for the reap.

For O goshi: DON'T STEP TOO DEEP, bring them to me, low, lapel grip pulls upward towards the end.

After this we did ne waza. Miguel submitted me by armbar. Kimmy submitted me by collar choke. I pinned Kevin. Rich pinned me and I pinned him. End of practice.

1/22
Went to South Hills Judo.
First hour Judo, Paul taught.
Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm)
We did the standard version and then a modified version. Modified, you have only the sleeve grip. do the same motion and step with left hand/foot, drive your forarm through their shoulder while reaping, quite powerful.

Seoi Nage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm)
Again we did orthodox and modified. Modified: Your hips are to high, drop to your knees to finish. You must have good grips/ their arm trapped sufficiently enough. Continue the pull and continue the turn.

ouchi gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ouchigari.htm)

We finished the judo hour with no Randori:mad:

Second hour, Bobby taught BJJ.

First we went over a scissors sweep (described earlier in log). If opponent's base is to good, shrimp back further and use left foot to push knee backwards. Same scissors motion with legs.

Hip Bump Sweep (hip heist)
shrimp back, sit up and reach your left arm around opponents right shoulder, use your right hand to post up off the ground, take them down back and at an angle.

If this failed due to opponent pushing forward we did this Armlock (http://web1.vattnet.com/judo/katamewaza/udegatame.html)

from guard.

Opponent is pushing forward.
Swim you right arm up under their left.
Clasp your right hand on your left.
Turn your hips to the side and bring your knee to their mid/upper back.
Opponent's wrist should be on your neck.
Press down on elbow.

If opponent pulled his arm out we did an americana (http://judoinfo.com/quiz0297_2.htm):

Opponent pulls arm back.
You had your right arm grabbing your left for the other hold, the left hand is therefore free, grab opponents now bent arm in a figure four hold.
Bring leg further up opponent's back.
Pull to finish.

Then we rolled. I had some sweeps, but didn't do my best. I rolled with Jimmy, Rich, and some yellow belt.

SevenStar

I love the americana. That modified o soto is powerful, but telegraphic., and you're missing part of the kazushi, making the forearm push necessary. Be aware of that when you use it.

Thanks, I like the orthodox Osoto better, but its always good to have the options open.

1/25
Went to South Hills Judo
Carl Levy taught the first hour
Warm Ups
Ukemi
Standing Randori:
My first parter (Rick {not sure of last name}) blackbelt and former olympic alternate who actually lived in the olympic training center in Colorado Springs. He said I wasn't committing enough to my throws.

Next partner Mark's brother (bearded guy). He is short and strong, hard to get anything on him. I got a tani otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm) when he went for a throw.

My last parter was a 16 year old kid who was really stiff. I took it easy on him and dropped him a couple times.

Drills. 14 fits and one throw for:
Ippon SeoiToshi (I couldn't locate a link for it?)

Morote Seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/moroteseoinage.htm)

Tai Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm)

The Second hour Bobby taught BJJ.

Pendulum sweep from guard: Grap uke's right sleeve, angle to right to underhook uke's left leg, use scissor motion of legs while keeping grip on arm to make sure they can't post.

Then failed sweep to armbar. Just swing left leg over opponents head.

Okay, so you have uke in armbar. Uke decides to stack you. Let go of left leg underhook and get the right leg, keep turning and you end up in a face down armbar.

*The sweep to armbar combo can be used back and forth until you get one*

After this we went over Americana from the mount.

Ne Waza Randori
Rolled with bearded guy (Mark's Brother). He is another whitebelt. Submitted him once by armbar. Controlled him position wise.

Rolled with Carlos. We went back and forth position wise, no submissions.

Rolled with Mark. Traded positions. He turtled up a few times and I proceeded to try to flaten him out.

Rolled with Bobby. Submitted me with ease. Once by triangle.

Rolled with Randy. He choked me with a collar choke from his guard. He told me if he has a deep grip on one side to protect the other side well. I submitted him once by rear naked, but I think he let me get it.

A good practice.

This week the head Judo instructor wasn't here. This may be due to bad weather. He is the one who wants me to test for yellow belt. I'm kind of happpy because I don't feel I'm completely ready.

Bobby talked about some basic principles last night. When your attacking space is usually the enemy. When your in your guard you usually want to create space to execute sweeps.
Points for me to remember for judo. Continue the pull when throwing. Committ to throws, don't worry about the counters.

Kazushi in shuai jiao (http://ycgf.org/ShuaiJiao/Principles/Balance.html)

did you use the tani otoshi tip I recommended, or was it something else? I love tai otoshi, but be careful with where you block their leg. I blocked right across someone's knee once and they tore ligaments in their leg. You have to be below their knee.

bodhitree
01-26-2007, 05:07 AM
It was like you recommended, but the situation just made it appropriate, kinda like I just fell into it. Do you know what the technique is called where you cup the knees with your hands and sweep and bump with the shoulder? We went over that but I can't recall the name.

Issues I need to address: I suck at passing guard. When I try if I get an arm under a leg I need to keep my head up to avoid a triangle choke. I really don't know any guard passes, Bobby said we'll work on one Wednesday of next week. He also said guard passes depend on what your opponent is doing, and every situation requires different guard passes.

SevenStar
01-26-2007, 03:00 PM
yeah, there are dozens of guard passes. Can you describe the throw any more?

4 people including Rick, Phil, Bobby and me attended practice.
I spent almost the full hour and a half with Rick going over Ippon Seoi Nage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm) from a lapel grip.

Points to remember: Pull the whole way through, like opponents lapel is a seatbelt I want to buckle (analogy courtesy of Rick). Get low, on balls of feet but planted. I worked on getting my left hip on his right thigh. Knees bent to get low, back slightly bent so uke folds onto you. With the right arm, secure bicep around tricep. Look at your pinks and turn while raising up and looking at your pinky. He had me uchi Komi him in front of the mirrors and I feel a lot more confident in my Ippon now then before today.

Rick then had me pull ippon on some innertubes that are tied to bars on the wall, talk about a great and cheap training tool. I'm about to pick some up.

Then we spent a little time on Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm)

Points to remember
Going at an angle towards the back/left. Chest contact in that direction. Rick's analogy "the chest contact is the gas and the kazushi with the hands is the steering". Turn head when stepping in that direction (to get the full body/energy that direction). Kazushi uke's arm into his back pocket (another analogy courtesy of Rick). Reap with a streight leg all the way through.

Seven: The throw is like a tackle, hands behind knees and drive with shouler, really simple throw, not too technical.

Went to South Hills Judo, Rick taught the Judo hour. Uchi Komi for a lot of different throws including O goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm), ippon seoi nage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm), Tai Otoshi (http://judoinof.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm), Hiza Garuma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/hizaguruma.htm), and maybe some I'm neglecting.

Standing Randori:
Chris, I managed to stuff a lot of his attempts and hit Tani Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm) (and actually I hit this with a few people during randori).

Rich, got one drop ippon on me. I got him with a tani otoshi and once he pulled me in, I grabbed a leg and lifted it then swept the other leg.

During standing randori I never feel like I can get hip throws, I feel I can't get the kazushi and close enough. It's not easy to pull uke to you.

BJJ hour taught by Bobby.

Went over Americana from mount.

Armbar from mount.
Uke pushes up on you, put your hands on his chest with all of your weight on them, scoot to right side raising far (left) leg to knee, sit forward to bring over right leg.

If you are attacking Uke's left arm use your right hand to post if he's trying to roll you. You get the most leverage this way.

Uke grips his hands together

Breaking grips. 1 Use your feet 2 Rip back and forth 3 Up and around 4 attack the other arm

Attacking the other arm from failed armbar from the mount
Uke's grip is too strong, let go.
Reach uner then deep on the far arm and pull him in.
Post with your free arm and get on uke's stomach.
You have the other arm in your hands, what are you waiting for.
Because of grapping deephis arms are far from his chest so even if he grips it is easier to break those grips.

Rolled with Chris: I did better rolling with him this time than I did the last time. He made me tap once with a collar choke. I controlled the positions a lot of the time.

o goshi and o soto gari can be a pain to land in randori. They are so straight forward that people can simply tense up and stiff arm to keep you away, among other things. When doing those throws, the variations you learn will be valuable, as you will be doing them from a more unexpected angle.

Are you allowed to neckwrap in Judo? Cant remember.

O Soto Gari is my bread and butter takedown. #2 is a hip throw, wrapping the neck.

yenhoi, they are allowed in Judo.

12/31
Went to South Hills Judo.
After warm ups I took the Yellow belt test and passed.
Went on to Uchi Komi (the rest of the class was already doing this) with 30 seconds of fits and then one throw.

Standing Randori

against Chris: Hit a Tani Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm) or two. Didn't get much, didn't give up much either.

against Paul: He swept/threw me a few times (he's a black belt) I mentioned I have never scored a hip throw in randori, he said it needs to come from a combo, maybe launch a forward throw first and then use uke's energy in resisting.

Second hour Bobby taught BJJ.

Shrimp out of mount to open guard drill.

Sweep from mount

Uke grabs your collar. Break down that arm and hold it close so uke can't post. Get a leg in to prevent uke from resetting his foot wide. Bump and roll.

A guard break

Grip both lapels with right hand and belt with left. Roll the material in the right hand tight keeping it close and low. Put right knee on uke's tailbone. Swing the left leg out 90 degrees and turn body that way. Push leg down, the guarn is open.

Rolling starting either in guard or with uke in your guard. I had some great sweeps. I did the hip heist sweep a couple times. Didn't give up any submissions. Didn't get any either but I feel I did really well as far as positions go.

one of the books I mentioned - attacking judo - is all about attacking in combinations. It covers throws, setups for them and follow ups for them. They also cover it to an extent on the judoinfo site - I'll try to find it.

I searched the local library network for that book, they did not have it. When I have some cash I'll pick it up. I'm new to Judo so hopefully I'll learn the combos soon.

I won't go to Pitt tonight because of a hot date with the wife (symphony tickets). I'm feeling pretty sick also so probably no Judo tomorrow. We'll see.

Yeah, attacking in combos is key. My favorite:

Ko Soto
Ko Uchi
O Uchi
Uchi Mata
Harai Goshi/Tai Otoshi.

I love this combo because until you get to the Harai/tai, you can pretty much just keep moving between the first four throws and pick whichever one is most available.

Also huge is learning to attack when you have a gripping advantage. If you've got two hands on and he has one, attack! If you have one and he has none, attack!

How do you throw your o soto?

Usually with a head wrap also, but pretty much anytime I have any sort of grip on the near arm I will try to walk through that near leg, which usually sets up the hip throw or some sort of single leg pick, or a better grip from the side which leads into cowbelling. I have found that as long as I have his weight on the near leg, pretty much any grip/hold will work for o soto. The overhook/neckwrap has always worked hand in hand with the neckwrapping followup hip throw (neckwrap comes from the o soto overhook.)

Im a taller dude. I dont play judo, so I usually just get a good hold and then sit down into side control. :D

2/15/07

Went to Pitt grappling club (no gi night), first time at a practice in a little over two weeks.

Went over escapes from bad position:

Side controll
* elbow in hip bridge to create space to get to half guard, then back to guard.
* Elbow in hip or underneath bridge and roll to turtle position

Kesi gatame
* Swing legs to one side to create momentum then the other to sit up
* Catch their leg with yours and roll them over. Unhook the leg while rolling
* Chase uke until he rides up, change direction and bridge him over

Mount
* typical overhook sweep, except break down the arm instead of overhook, this prevents them from posting on that arm. Controll head, hook their leg, roll back and at an angle.

We drilled starting in these positions one person's job is to escape, one person's job to keep position. I did better with escapes than maintaining position.

Free Roll

Rolled with Jake. I controlled position for a little while, then gave up my back, eventually I tapped to a choke.

Some other guy. Back and forth positional battle.

Feels great to be back, I feel so out of shape. It's only been two weeks.

my name is Jeff Contraguerro and i got your address from
Anonomous. We are holding a grappling tourney on May 5, 2007 at
Hempfield High School. When our web-site and flyer is done, i will be
sending it out to you. I just wanted to give the local schools and
clubs a heads up.
There will be gi and no gi divisions. A person can do one or both. We
will follow NAGA rules.

Hoping to be in shape for this!

being heavier is not necessarily an advantage. A person needs to know how to use their weight, whatever it may be. In Judo I have the hardest time trying to randori with the little guys because they are short and it's hard to get underneath their center of gravity.

don't try to get under someone shorter than you, that's usually a losing battle. sweep them and utilize throws that don't require you being under them, like tai otoshi and uchi mata.

Jimmy taught.
Gi night, first half judo.
Ippon Seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm)
First we did the standard right side, then we did stepping to the right (as if you were going for osoto gari) and then spinning and doing Ippon to the left side.
and
Ouchi Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ouchigari.htm)

Since you usually land in guard we went over good posture in guard. Head up and back streight. Your arms should not be directly below your head (it is easy to break you down at that point)elbows slightly bent on either uke's lapel, belt, leg, or a combo of these. It is important to pin uke's hips.

Then we went to guard breaks

1. Twisting Knee In Tailbone (http://frodojj.blogspot.com/2006/09/twisting-knee-in-butt-guard-break.html)

From your good posture angle your left leg out to the left. Move your right knee into uke's tailbone. Turn to break the guard. Pin down uke's right leg with your hand and then your near leg.

Continue to pass

With Uke's leg pinned with your left leg, underhook with your right arm (uke's arm), bring your rear leg also over uke's right leg, post on uke's right arm with your left and bring your right leg through first (to avoid getting stuck in half guard). Welcome to Kesa Gatame.

2. Posture and Turn (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=111952703762762255)

The first guard break failed to work. Step your right leg up close to uke's hip. Step back with your left leg standing up. Turn. Continue to pass in the same manner as #1.

3. Stacking Guard Pass (http://frodojj.blogspot.com/2006/09/stacking-guard-break.html)

Create some space, dig both hands under one of uke's legs (both to avoid triangle). Scoop up that leg come to your toes and press the leg TOWARDS UKE'S HEAD. (push his knee to his nose). Come around from under the leg, gripping uke's lapel.

After this we rolled.

Rolled with Al. Had one pretty sweet thing. Just like Bobby taught it a few weeks ago, I was trying to armbar from mount and couldn't break his grips, so I grabbed deep on the opposite arm, pulled it in, hopped around to the other side and armbarred that side.

Rolled with some guy, traded positions, not much else, he had me in a guillotine and I almost tapped but then it loosened up and I popped my head out.

An explanation of posture while in the guard by Jimmy himself:

Keep your hands in a plane in front of your head. Whenever your hands are in the same plane as your head or behind, then you are off-balance.

Furthermore, keep your arms bent slightly and not like a stiff rod. You want to be able to counter your opponent's attempts to break your grips (in gi and nogi) and get underneath to arm-drag you (both gi and nogi).

Keep you head up. You want to be with your face almost exactly perpendicular to your opponent's body/the mat. This means you will have to look down with your eyes but not turning your head, but that's ok. Bowing your face towards your opponent makes it easier for him to hook around your head (both gi and nogi) or grip your gi (in gi).

Make sure you are pinning his hips instead of just his chest. You have to attack his hips primarily and move them away to break the guard. Also be sure not to take large jumps or be really stiff. You can be strong, but not extremely inflexible with your arms. Stiff arms are easy for your opponent to guide away, but loose and relaxed arms are hard for him to move and is easier for you to counter his motions (like hand fighting). This goes hand-in-hand with not spazzing out. The less of a spaz you become truly, the less rigid your arms will be.

Finally, keep your elbows in. You should feel like your arms are turned inward like when driving a car steering wheel at 9:00 (or less) and 3:00 (or more) or even closer to the bottom of the wheel. If you elbows are facing outward, your opponent can grip them and pull your posture apart. It also helps prevent armbars and triangle chokes. I'm not talking about jamming your elbows into his thighs (a stupid technique) but keeping your elbows from being used as handles for him. Think of this as though you are a little tyrannosaurus with dinosaur arms.

Oh, and for leg position, always widen before narrowing. E.G. If you are doing the knee-in-butt guard break, then you should extend your leg to the side FIRST and then put your knee in his buttock. Doing the opposite narrows your base and makes it easier to be swept.

Michael Jen produces a great DVD called Ultimate Guard Passing which explains these details very well.- Jimmy

After warm ups and ukemi

throws (tachiwaza)

de ashi harai (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/deashibarai.htm)

Ogoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm)

Uki Goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ukigoshi.htm)

On O goshi and Uki Goshi I need to keep my pull high, not step too deep, get lower, and keep my pull continuous.

Tsurikomi Ashi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/sasaetsurikomiashi.htm)
First time I did this one, it's pretty interesting. I have to remember to lift for the kazushi.

Hiza Guruma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/hizaguruma.htm)

On to Standing randori. Tips I recieved, don't look down (draw roadmap) and don't be so tense/use so much strength.
I actually got an osoto gari and an Ippon Seoinage. To get the ippon (on somebody smaller than me) I kept acting like I was going for osoto, I did the kazushi for osoto then changed the direction of the pull. That was the first time I had a successful Ippon during randori.

BJJ hour, taught by Bobby.

Warm up with 2 min of scissor sweeps.

Taking mount from side controll. Keep hips close to uke's. Shoulder drives uke's chin to other side (to reduce mobility). Grab gi material on uke's near leg. Pull leg out (if it is uke's right leg) slide your left leg through. Quickly shoot your right leg over uke's body and through his left leg. You now have mount with grapevines.

Key lock with legs from broken Kesa Gatame. Hard to explain. Keep your head down on uke (to prevent him from using other arm). Act like you are going for a collar choke. He defends with arm that will be attacked. Push down arm and swing leg over it, grab your own shin, triangle legs over top. You can apply the pressure in 3 ways. 1 use your hand to pull the elbow 2 raise your hips/legs
3 pull his neck towards his elbow.

That one was hard to explain, I'll look for a link to a picture.

Taking the back from side controll. You have uke's near leg gi material and near shoulder. Uke tries to roll to escape. SLIDE NEAR HOOK IN FIRST. Go over get your other hook. Don't be to far over uke, if your are post and push yourself back. You can attack from here or turn him over.

Newaza randori

Against Anthony. He's a new guy. I kept getting kesa gatame, finally got mount and armbar.

Anonomous guy. Got him with armbar from the mount.

Randy. Owned me. He didn't submit me but owned me position wize.

Anthony again. Kept dominant postition and submitted with a rear naked.

I got a little to armbar happy. I was looking for it when it wasn't really there.

Overall, a great practice.

Went to South Hills Judo Club (above should say 2/21)

Rick taught the Judo hour

I was tired and out of it, and my judo sure did suffer. I wasn't getting low enough, my footwork was sloppy,my feet were too far apart, everything was bad.

Did 4 uchi komi and one throw for

Ippon Seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm)

Tai Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm)

O goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm)

Went on to randori

landed a tai otoshi, maybe my parter let me, pretty much owned.

BJJ hour, Bobby taught.

BJJ warm ups, 3 min going from armbar to triangle.

Armbar from the back

You have your hooks in already. Bring your left arm under uke's left arm. Take your right hook out and step it over. Grab uke's left shoulder gi material with your right arm. Roll forward over your left hand, let go of uke's shoulder, finish your armbar.

Attacking the turtle. We learned two attacks.

Streight arm lock (http://web1.vattnet.com/judo/katamewaza/wakigatame.html).

Uke is in the turtle position. Your upper body is over his your, right knee under him, and your left leg is out giving you good base. Uke is trying to defend his collars. Stick your left hand through and grab your knee. Pull it out. This releases his arm. Never taking your weight off of uke, bring your right arm over his shoulder till your elbow is on the mat near uke's head. Pull back and finish the lock.

Crucifix Choke (http://grapplearts.com/Rolling-Crucifix-Choke.html)

We did almost exactly the same way they did it in that article. Point to remember: Thread the collar through with the other hand first to get it really tight.

After this was the free roll. I left kind of early due to being so fatigued. Rolled with bearded guy (I think his name might be Mark). Got him in an armbar. Then I gassed and was just dominated by positions.

Going to use today (2/22) as a recovery day.

Sweeps are good attacks that can be thought of similar to a jab in boxing - it keeps a person from rushing in, because they have to be conscious of the sweep. Also, use sweeps to set up the big throws.

Gi Night
First went over morote seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/moroteseoinage.htm)

Get hips lower than uke's. Good pull, pull him over you. High pull looking at watch. Continuous and turn into the throw. Hey, that sounds like it applies to all over the hip throws.

Drilled it while walking.

Then we went over guard passes, same ones as on 2/16

2. The first guard break failed to work. Step your right leg up close to uke's hip. Step back with your left leg standing up. Turn. Continue to pass in the same manner as #1.

Another Guard Pass
Create some space, dig both hands under one of uke's legs (both to avoid triangle). Scoop up that leg come to your toes and press the leg TOWARDS UKE'S HEAD. (push his knee to his nose). Come around from under the leg, gripping uke's lapel Me-2/16

Drills, one person's job to pass guard, one person's job to keep guard for 2 minutes.

Free Roll

Since there are so many small people at the judo club I chased after the bigger guys. Went with Warren, did surprisingly well. Took him down with Tai Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm)
then we traded some postitions, I managed to do pretty good.

Rolled with Phil (different from Judo Phil). Had better positions, no submissions.

Long hair guy, dominated positions. Accidentally kneed him in the mouth. Felt bad.

Little Judo Guy. Owned me completely.

Overall great practice.

Warm Up
Ukemi
Uchi Komi for
Ippon Seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm)

Kouchi Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/kouchigari.htm)

Harai Goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/haraigoshi.htm)

I never did harai goshi before. I really liked it. Keep pull high, at first head towards uke, on his shoulder. As you lift uke turn your head the other way.

O goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm)

Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm)

Then we did grip fighting randori.

On to regular randori. I only did randori with Eric. He threw me all around.

BJJ hour taught by Bryce and Randy.

EVEN MORE GUARD PASSES! This is good, I've been to 3 classes in two weeks about guard passes.

Bull Fighter guard pass (http://frodojj.blogspot.com/2006/09/bull-fighter-guard-pass.html).
You are standing in uke's open guard. Press on uke's legs into him. When uke pushes back with his legs step back and pull his legs back (it is good to grip his gi at the knees). If you go to your left step your right leg by uke's right hip and get knee on belly. Quickly change to side controll.

Knee slap guard pass.
You are standing in uke's open guard. Drop your right knee over his right leg (the far leg). Slide out keeping your weight on uke (your back is on him). Slide around to get to side controll.
Kind of like this (http://grapplearts.com/Guard-Pass-Knee-Slide.html), but when your knee goes down have your back (keeping your weight) on uke.

Another guard pass (http://frodojj.blogspot.com/2006/04/leg-on-shoulder-pass.html)
You are in uke's open guard, this time he goes to his hips like he is attempting a scissors sweep. Grip his right knee with your left hand and his lapel with your right. Pin the near leg (his left with your right). Keep your grips, put your head and shoulder on his chest. Take a large back step with your left leg behind your right. Unhook your right leg while pushing his right leg with your knee material grip. This keeps him on his back.

Free Rolling

Rolled with one guy (don't recall his name). Maintained good position untill I made a mistake. He took my back, I avoided the choke and got back to his guard. No submissions either side.

Rolled with Rich. I got one sweep from a bad postion but other than that he pretty much dominated it.

Rolled with Bryce. He absolutely owned me. He got an armbar from rear mount.
Just like Bobby taught it on 2/22

Armbar from the back

You have your hooks in already. Bring your left arm under uke's left arm. Take your right hook out and step it over. Grab uke's left shoulder gi material with your right arm. Roll forward over your left hand, let go of uke's shoulder, finish your armbar.

I got owned in Randori and Free rolling. I'm trying to run to the guys who are 1 bigger than me. And 2. Better/more experienced than me.

Don't get me wrong, I like having success against new guys, but what am I really learning. We'll see. I want to compete in May.

SevenStar
02-28-2007, 04:06 PM
beating new guys is essential in your training. Why? because you can tool them. they are your opportunity to work things that you know you won't be able to work on the mor experienced guys. For example, in muay thai my slipping and weaving isn't as good as I want it to be. It's sometimes harder to work that on coach, because if I slip the wrong way, he's gonna capitalize on it and follow up with more shots. The newbies are slow enough that I can dodge most of their stuff, and even if I don't, they aren't good enough to follow up. Consequently, they are perfect for practicing on.

when I spar / randori with someone not as good as me, I pick a specific thing to work - a certain technique, focus on footwork, etc. - and do that for most of the match. At the same time, you notice holes in their game that you used to make. by noticing them, you learn how to exploit them. By telling them how to fix them, you enhance yourself from a teaching perspective, which deepens your understanding.

With the right mindset you can learn a lot from whooping up on the new guys.

Koshi Guruma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/koshiguruma.htm)

Koshi Guruma, you don't have to get as far below uke's hips because you are controlling the head. You do have to get the hip outside of uke's.

On to groundwork.

Pendulum Sweep (http://www.grapplearts.com/Andreh-Armbar-to-Reverse-Roll.htm)

Controll one arm, foot in hip and angle like you are going to do an armbar, underhook knee on that side, lift far leg and sweep uke over.

Ippon Seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm)
to
Kouchi Gake (http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/kougake.gif)

Again, uke resists. Change directions wrap right leg around uke's right leg, drive with the left leg, your arm is over uke's leg preventing escape. The motion is kind of like a side breakfall.

Randori.

Two blackbelts (Rick and other guy {don't know his name}) absolutely owned me. Rick said I need to attack more.

Whitebelt who trained judo at Penn State (don't recall his name either). I landed a Kouchi Gake (see above) and an uchi mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm)
in the first couple minutes with him. Then he started to land stuff on me. Carl said I was trying to muscle him too much.

Did some BJJ drills after class with a guy who is a blue belt under Relson Gracie. We just did some armbar from the guard and triangle to armbar drills.

Good class, not too much of a workout.

Uchi Komi

Koshi Guruma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/koshiguruma.htm)

Ouchi Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ouchigari.htm)

Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm)

We were doing these throws quickly, as soon as we gained a grip. For Koshi Guruma, we grabbed the lapel and immediately pulled it in. For Ouchi, we grabbed uke's lapel, uke braces himself, seize the opportunity and go. We did Osoto from the lapel grip also.

Randori

Went one round with the guy who trained judo at Penn State. Neither of us had any great throws. I kind of had a Kouchi Gake (http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/kougake.gif)

BJJ hour taught by Bobby.

Posture in half guard. Be on your side, don't let uke flatten you out. Don't let uke underhook your near arm. You want that arm under his and reaching around grabbing his belt on the far side.

2 half guard sweeps

1. You are in the above mentioned posture. Try to chiken wing your way out to take the back, uke blocks by overhooking your arm. Reach your right arm under uke and grab his left foot. At this point let go of uke's belt with your left hand and place uke's foot in that hand. Use your right hand to post and get set (all while keeping uke's foot in the left hand). Grab uke's knee with the right hand and drive into him with head and shoulder. Lift leg over to pass his half guard. Really effortless. (Eddie Bravo calls this sweep "old-school")

2. You try above sweep and uke puts all of his weight on top of you preventing it. With the right hand instead of grabbing at the knee, come under the shin. Roll uke in opposite direction. (Eddie Bravo's plan B to old-school)

Free Rolling

White belt guy. Kept good position. I was armbarring him from top and he got his leg over my head and I actually tapped from that. I'm embarrassed.

Randy- choked me out once. Traded positions. He complemented me on the progress I've been making.

Bobby- Owned me, I managed to avoid a couple submissions but he kept catching me.

Ippon seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm) to tani otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm)

Fake the Ippon then step behind, drive with the rear leg.

Hane goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/hanegoshi.htm) to hane makikomi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/hanemakikomi.htm)

You go for hane goshi, uke resists, wrap around and drop. Your armpit should be by his (chest contact).

Uke tries ippon seoinage, we counter with ushiro goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ushirogoshi.htm)

Then again, uke tries ippon seoinage, pivot away to osotogari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm)

Then the same pivot to Osoto Guruma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotoguruma.htm)

This is the same as osoto gari except you reap both legs.

Randori. I had the distinguished honor of my first two opponents being blackbelts. Needless to say they threw me around. I took Rick's advice from last time and tried to attack more. I tried a drop ippon on him, he told me there was too much space between us.

Randori with Jeremy. I was worn out from the two blackbelts, he got an ogoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm) on me, I got a tani otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm) on him.

On to Ne Waza Randori.

Rich, uneventful, I think we both had sweeps.

Don't remember guy's name. Took mount a few times. Got him with an armbar from mount.

Phil, he tooled me. Submitted me with a kimura and some other stuff.

Carl taught us yoko shiho gatame (http://judoinfo.com/images/osaekomi/yoko_shiho_gatame.gif)

If you can trap far arm under you better. Arm that's under leg grips uke's gi skirt. get your knee close to uke's other armpit, pinning it in.

After class Rich and I did some uchi komi for: Ogoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm), koshi guruma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/koshiguruma.htm), and harai goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/haraigoshi.htm)

Points to remember: On throws like harai goshi or uchimata I need to step less deep so my kazushi can work. Sleeve pull high (looking at watch). Get my hips lower than uke's when throwing. Relax during randori.

Good night overall.

Went over Hip heist (hip bump) sweep.

Series of 3 attacks from guard.

Kimura from guard (http://grapplearts.com/Kimura-Technique-1.htm)

If they streighten their arm out of the kimura we went to This Lock (http://web1.vattnet.com/judo/katamewaza/udegatame.html) another discription (http://frodojj.blogspot.com/2006/12/elbow-press.html)

They streighten their arm after the kimura, trap it behind your head, turn your hips towards them with your feet in their hips, apply pressure right above the tricep.

If they escape from this we applied an Americana (http://judoinfo.com/quiz0297_2.htm)from guard My teachers discription (http://frodojj.blogspot.com/2007/04/americana-from-guard.html)

Once again these pictures are a poor illustration. The last armlock failed due to them bending their arm, catch the arm, get your one leg over their head to prevent mobility. Finish americana.

Rolling

Rolled with a few people. I didn't do too well. One guy completely owned me. A guy I owned the last time we rolled did much better this time. I learned Kouchi Makikomi is not so good for grappling situations. It gives uke hooks to take your back. As a matter of fact...

I had my back taken a few times. I defended really well after giving up my back, but I need to stop giving it up.

I did have some good sweeps, but didn't score any submissions.

Kimura (http://grapplearts.com/Kimura-Technique-2.htm) from side controll.

If you have uke in side controll and they try to kimura you. Step your leg up over your elbow, it is blocked. You can now eiter 1 Take right hand and push on uke to break his grip or 2 Swing around for the far side armbar.

Uke (who you have in side controll) pushes up on your face, you give a little then push his arm down for an Americana.

Ne Waza Randori

Rolled with Anthony, Got him once by streight armbar, once by americana with the legs (from Kesa Gatame).

Rolled with bearded guy, kept good postition, no submissions.

Rolled with new guy. He was huge and strong. Kept him in guard the whole time.

Rolled with Anthony again, got the takedown (he tried osoto and I just tossed him). Got him once with an armbar.

I hit some armbars, but I want more controll of opponent when doing them and to get my leg accross their face in a smoother and faster way.

Perhaps I'll try this:

A BETTER ARMBAR?

I recommend checking out this tip on my website at http://tinyurl.com/3b5j8a
(or www.grapplearts.com/2007/03/better-armbar.htm) because I have
added lots of photos to clarify the positions I am talking about. I
am sending out the following information in email format just in case
you don't have access to a web browser right now.

The armbar, as it is usually taught, involves using BOTH of your hands
or arms to control ONE of your opponent's arms. This two-on-one
control is used both to break through your opponent's defenses, and to
actually apply the armbar submission.

The two-on-one armbar control has won a LOT of matches in BJJ, MMA,
submission grappling, judo, sambo, etc. It is a tried and true
approach, but unfortunately that also means that there are a LOT of
counters to this type of armbar.

Prior to a few years ago, I'd seen some one-handed armbar variations
where the top arm controlled the arm and the bottom hand controlled
the near leg. I thought that these were simply interesting variations,
and not really bread-and-butter material.

Then my my longtime training partner, Vlado Skrepnik, started
attacking me with the one-handed armbar. I remember feeling really
frustrated, because his control of my leg effectively killed most of
my escape techniques. Most armbar counters rely on turning into your
opponent, or turning away from your opponent and/or getting to your
knees - all of which are nullified by his control of your leg.

About a year after after Vlado started using this style of armbar I
came across a book by Eddie Bravo, and discovered that Eddie calls
this position the "spider web" using it as the foundation of his
armbar attacks. Maybe these guys were onto something, I thought, and
decided to find out for myself.

Since that point I have experimented with this style of armbar, and
generally I've been pretty happy with it. It really does make it much
more difficult for your opponent to escape the armbar position.
Furthermore if you don't give up much control or power over his arm IF
you use correct technique.

Below I'll take you through a two variations of the initial position,
and then show you a simple way to break your opponent's grip when he
locks his hands together to counter your armbar.

One-armed armbar, shallow grip:

I am sitting up and leaning slightly towards his legs. My bottom hand
controls his leg by gripping behind his closest knee (with the gi you
can grip cloth). My top arm is inserted DEEP on his arm (inner elbow
to inner elbow) - I can cup my own thigh with my hand to keep things
tight. I prefer crossing my feet in this armbar position, and having
my bottom foot over my top foot feels the most natural to me.

One-armed armbar, deep grip

This variation is pretty similar except that I am lying down on my
left side and my left arm is hooked much more deeply around his leg.

One-armed armbar counter and recounter

I start in the one-armed armbar position, but my opponent blocks my
armbar by clasping his hands together and preparing his escape. I have
many options to counter his counter (what I call 're-counters'), but
here is a simple, high-percentage option:

Maintaining my grips in exactly the same position I place the foot of
my bottom leg on his far bicep. I push with my leg and pull with my
lower back creating a tremendous pressure on his grip. If he needs
more convincing to let go I 'jackhammer' my leg in a series of short,
sharp stomps.

When my opponent releases his grip I keep my foot on his bicep while
falling back. The crook of my elbow starts sliding up his forearm
towards his wrist, increasing the length of my lever and the amount of
force I can generate on his arm.

I maintain my grip on his leg right until he taps out. In the final
position the crook of my top arm is at his wrist, which is much more
secure than grabbing his wrist with my hand.

If you managed to follow what I am talking about without pictures then
I'm impressed! If you want to see pictures to go with the text then
go to http://tinyurl.com/3b5j8a (or
www.grapplearts.com/2007/03/better-armbar.htm).

Until next time....

Elevator sweep from sitting on your butt with feet in hips guard (? spider/butterfly guard?)

uke grabs your knee gi material. Push his hand through, both of your feet go to the inside of his thigh, fall to your side, take him over, sit your hips through.

Kind of like this (http://www.lockflow.com/article_view.php?id=166)but from a different guard position and with a gi

Can't get that sweep because uke's grip is too strong, kick leg forward.

Face down armbar starting from that guard position. Uke has your knee gi material. Pull your leg extending his arm. Underhook and roll to a face down armbar.

Combat base guard pass.

Stand up in guard. Step back with your right foot then bring it forward. Get your knee between you and uke. Take a knee on your left knee your right knee in front of you, which made uke's guard really loose . This is combat base. Break and pass.

Cross arm choke

Uke has collar grip inside of your guard. Pop hips up, break his grip, overhook the arm. Grip his lapel on the other side with the overhook side. With free arm grab his gi around his shoulder. Shrimp to the side and pull his gi. If he has his chin down you can pry it with your elbow or shake.

Uke posts on your bicep to prevent this, armbar to opposite arm.

If these don't work you can get a triangle.

Gi Choke from guard

Pull uke's lapel out. Hand his gi skirt around his head. From your right hand hand to your left, then bring the right under and grab again (make sure you have all 4 fingers so uke can't break your grip on this material). Grab (going under your right hand) the collar material on your right side with your left hand. With elbows close pull in.

Uke Grabs your hand with his right hand to defend. Pull that arm to the mat, sit around him with your stomach on his shoulder and grab deep, roll him over. If he resists take his back.

Instead of defending the choke with his right, he does with his left. Pull his left arm across his body (while keeping the grip on the gi material), pull his head in, pull material. This is like a triangle.

Rolling.

Rolled with Guy. Traded positions, took mount and passed his guard. Got no submissions.

Rolled with Bobby. Managed to avoid submissions, I had the help of Jimmy coaching me through this.

Rolled with Randy. Jimmy kept telling me about posture when I was standing up in open guard, I was leaning forward. I will try to focus on this in the future. Randy got a choke on me.

Rolled with Paul. He got me with an armlock.

Rolled with Randy again from standing. I tried an arm reversal/Ude Gaesh (http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/udegaesh.gif) which didn't work, so Randy had my back.

Groups of four, throw each person 10 times, I focused on the same throws as above.

Promise throws, i also focused on those throws.

BJJ, Randy taught.

Bull Fighter pass

From standing in guard, grab knee gi material, push legs into uke. When uke pushes back, pull the legs down and stap around to the side.

Half guard pass #1

You are in half guard and you get the underhook with your right arm. Shoulder into uke's chin (to prevent him from sweeping), bring your hips high and your leg in half guard (right leg) to your left side, place the knee to the floor. If uke hangs on, shake his feet loose.

Half guard pass #2

You don't have the underhook. Bring your body to where you're looking at uke's feet (he should only see your back). Wedge your left arm under his and grab his belt. Use your right hand to push his legs down. You can also use your foot to help free the leg.

Rolled with Mark's brother

Traded positions, no submissions.

Rolled with Julian

He submitted me once by a choke.

Rolled with Carlos

Bucking with the hips is important in both of these.

Went over Te Guruma (http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/teguru.gif)

Pull uke's arm accross, get low and one hand around leg, other maintains lapel grip. Dump uke.

Uchi Komi: Koshi Guruma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/koshiguruma.htm) Harai Goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/haraigoshi.htm)

Rolled with John (from steel city martial arts) I was in his guard in good posture for a really extended period of time. Eventually I tapped to an armlock, but I was really just tired.

Talked about some things after class. Shrimping and using the elbow to get the leg through in mount.

Went over gi choke: You are in mount, grap the collar deep with one hand. Act like your off balance and post with your other (near the head), let uke roll you. Uke rolls into your guard and more importantly into your choke.

I'm doing gi and no gi there. I'm hoping to do a few privates with Bobby prior to it. I bought a bike to increase my cardio efforts.

My Story:
One black belt tested me and promoted me to orange belt. At the end of class another black belt noticed how I had my belt tied and told me I have to tie it right or he is confiscating it. I don't know how to tie a belt right (nobody ever taught me) and my belt was taken. I don't care about the belt, but sh!t.

I need to work on- more kazushi and more sleeve pull. On foot sweeps I need to work on using my hands to kazushi more.

BJJ

Bobby taugh

Armdrag from guard to either

1 take the back

2 sweep

To take the back: put your foot in hip armdrag their arm to the floor, you want their shoulder in your stomach. Get your hooks in. Congrats, you have their back.

Sweep: Same set up as taking the back, take them to their right, they have nothing to post with.

Sweep from open guard: You have sleeve controll. Wrap your right leg around the outside of then under uke's arm. Put your other leg on uke's waist on the same side as other leg. uke will try to pass guard putting his weight on you. Flip him over. You have a bicep slicer there if you choose to take it.

Rolled with Bobby with no gi- got submitted but Bobby said I was moving well

Rolled with Randy- got subbed but randy said the same thing.

Brabo Choke from half guard, uke has underhook.

Link 1 (gi) (http://grapplearts.com/Brabo-Gi-Choke.htm)

Link 2 (no gi) (http://grapplearts.com/Brabo-No-Gi-Choke.htm)

We were wearing a gi but still learned the no-gi version. We also used different grips and did a "baseball bat choke" variation with the hands in a gable grip.

We also did it from uke having half guard and an underhook and from uke turtled in front of you reaching around your back.

Went over the arm triangle (http://judoinfo.com/images/osaekomi/kata_gatame.gif).
We also did the arm triangle with two different grips.

Started in Kesa Gatame. Uke pushes up on you, push their arm to the side. Use your head to trap that arm. Get the corner of you elbow below uke's head (so it is very deep). Squeeze arms together and drive your weight into your shoulder into uke's neck.

Went over RNC over the face. Extend your arm far over ukes face. Even if the chin is tucked, you can still get the choke.

Rolling

Rolled with Tom

Got some good positions, he caught me in a choke.

Rolled with a guy from a different school, man this guy was strong. He schooled me a few times.

Rolled with Randy. Got some okay positions. One time he caught me in Kesa Gatame, Jimmy told me to start my escape BEFORE he is set in the position. Randy submitted me a few times. He told me my balance was good and it was hard to take me down.

High Crotch to body lock takedown.

Step your knee down, grab under the leg, come up for the body lock, finish the takedown (similar to Tani Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm)

Ways to finish single legs

(AND MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR ME, HEAD ON THE INSIDE!!!!)

If they are sprawled on top of you block leg with one hand grab ankle with the other. You can take them to their back or their stomach.

****zer (edit: they edited w h i z z e r)

Overhook when they are trying to do single leg. Step your leg back and pressure the shoulder. If you need to take them down, throw their arm forward to take their back.

Went over Ogoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm) as a counter to Ogoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm). First block the hips, then switch your hips in front.

Kumikata (gripfighting).

Kumikata randori. I got good controll over oponents. Good exercise.

Randori-

Jimmy- I got him off balance standing up, on the ground he almost caught me in a triangle but then we got stood back up.

Bearded guy- he kept shooting for a single leg, so I sprawled.

Phil- Threw me, I had him the most off balance I ever got him.

Drilled- pin escapes

Rolled with Jeffrey (big strong guy). Last week he absolutely beat me up. This week I realized a lot of what he is using is pure strength. He is strong as hell. He went for chokes that were nowhere near there and just kept squeezing and I just chilled. I passed his guard a couple times and took him down once (he pulled guard the rest). He did submit me maybe twice, I can't remember. Did a lot better against him this week.

I'm going to practice that in my footwork during my shadow Uchi Komi at home.

In this log I rarely discuss conditioning. I don't lift weights because I don't really have access to them. I am trying to do a lot of shadow uchi komi, jumping rope, riding bike, and high reps of bodyweight exercises. I have resistance tubes at home that I use for uchi komi also. Shrimping, bridging, and coming to base are also things I do regularly. I'm also adding duckwalks (shots) to my practices. I figure sport specific movement are great tools. I quit lifting when I started judo (in December) and my strength has definately went down, but my technique and stamina have improved. Flexibility is also a goal of mine. I do motion stretching as a warm up. I also try to do static stretching at the end of every practice session (whether solo or at a class). I wish I had it in me to wake up early and do some road work before work. I really love my sleep. I will try to do that :(

it happens. that's part of competing. you learn a lot about yourself when you lose, and you are actually somewhat fortunate - you lost from the get go. My first ever judo shiai was the state championships, in which I placed second. I won several kickboxing matches. I was on a roll. My first loss crushed me, literally. I was down in the dumps for a while, because I didn't think that I was supposed to lose. You really look at yourself when this happens and analyze what you are doing right and wrong, and try to eliminate the holes you find in your game. In the end, you will be a better fighter and person for it.

Here is a hl vid of the guy who beat me (and placed in the division) at the Kumite classic. I'm the first person you see him facing, the one he pulls guard on, then sweeps (with the hip bump sweep) and goes to side mount then mount. He beat me by points. From the vid it looks like I tap to the armbar, but I got out of that. He was aggressive and tried quite a few subs (armbar, triangle) but I escaped all of that.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=CDDKPrmpR9c

Any critiques/advice welcomed.

couldn't see a whole lot, since the clip was short, but be more aggressive. Notice how the guy in the black gi resisted being pulled into the guard - you just kinda fell into it. Same thing with the hip bump - shove him back down, don't just wrap his waist and let him bump you over. I know there are like 243982345 different guard passes...when you posture up, do they teach you to put your knee in his tailbone? Give it a shot. Good job, keep it up.

Thanks for the replies. I agree with your assessment of the match, and that's the first thing I thought about the hip bump. I was working the knee in tailbone, the guard game lasted longer than that short clip will make you believe.

I appreciate the words.

Scott, if you want to add something quick (but painful :) ) to your conditioning routines, try Tabata Intervals. Ross Enamit has a great article on them here (http://www.rosstraining.com/articles/tabataintervals.html). Be warned though, Tabata burpees, or squats are a b**ch.

Not sure. I'm out of town right now on business. Reading stuff and posting to kill time. Depends on what time I get home. 3 days of no training sucks

I agree with your assessment that I need to be more aggressive. I am going to try to make that a priority in training. I am too reactive and not proactive enough.

Hit the clubs weight room before class. Did Squats (with only like 60lbs on the old style {light} bar). Did 5 sets of 10-15 explosive and atg. In between squat sets did dumbbell rows with 45lb dbs. Just enough to get a good sweat before class. Gonna try to hit the weight room before every Monday and Wednesday class.

Jeff (pittfrog)- owned me with an awesome choke (anaconda). He got it sprawled on top of me after an attempted shot.

Aaron and John went over wrestling takedowns

Arm drag, step leg inside, while pulling fall to side (your legs are around their near leg), climb on the back.

Failed outside trip (similar to Kosoto Gake) (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/kosotogake.htm) to sacrafice throw (like a lateral drop (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/yokootoshi.htm)). You try an outside trip, uke steps back to avoid. Fall to the side and take uke with you. (I'm using Judo illustrations but these techniques were done without a gi)

Went over an arm press armbar from side controll. Switch from side controll to kesa gatame to get your leg under uke's arm and go back to side controll. Step leg over uke's head and puch hip into uke's elbow.

hey bodhi,

great log man you go into a lot of detail and the links etc are really good...

unlucky on the loss, but losing is the best thing in the world 'cos they just TOLD you what your weakness is and what you need to work on. thats the most valuable info you could get bro ;)

i watched the clip, you're the 2nd guy right? the 1st just got armbarred straight away? its a HL and all edited up but... anyway from my perspective/game i would try to be more mobile with the hips, when he goes to pass, scoot hips out and attack (guillotine/kimura/armbar/triangle/sweep basics), so im fighting more of my side than flat on my back. of course im 99% no-gi and im trying to play a mobile guard game too. your probably better than me anyway :D

pity this isnt on the training&health page i may not read this so often :(

Judo hour, Julian taught.

Morote Seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/moroteseoinage.htm)

Getting low is important on this one. When I was uke the tori was so low his butt was hitting my knee, and he launched me.

Seoi Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/seoiotoshi.htm)

Like Tai Otoshi with a ippon seoi grip.

We did two variations, one stepping in and back like a regular Tai Otoshi, the other stepping more directly in front.

Randori

Brandon- Threw me once, I didn't throw him.

Tom- No throws, I sprawled on a single leg attempt of his.

Chad- Got me with Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm) towards the end I got him with a Kouchi Gake (http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/kougake.gif)

BJJ hour Bobby taught

2 minutes scissors sweeps

Uke is in your guard gripping your belt- A Grip Break-

Grap uke's sleeve and figure 4 with other hand. Put your foot in the hip and pull accross.

A Choke

Same grip break as above. Take uke's arm up and around your head and overhook it deep, grabbing the opposite sides lapel with the overhook hand. Feed the lapel deeper with your free hand. Swing your legs over, push with your legs and pull the lapel material.

You can't choke uke. So, on the overhook side with your other hand, grab uke's shoulder material to hold him down. Swing your legs around for a triangle choke.

From the overhook, a pressing armlock by hipping up (sometimes it works as a compression lock on the tricep rather than attacking the joint).

Rolling

Julian- Submitted me once with Ude Garame, I took his back once.

Paul- I tried to be aggressive and stay in good positions, I took his back once. He got out of that and got me with an armlock.

Pittfrog- He had all of the good positions, I managed to avoid the choke when he had my back.

Fun Practice.

For the armlock--Bobby came over and gave a few of us a good tip:

As you're hipping up, and pressing on the shoulder with the opposite hand, you want the pressure on the shoulder to be out towards your hip, not down towards your and uke's feet.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn't understanding the armlock the way I'd like to. We were practicing it lower (on the elbow) and it seemed to work better that way for us.

I really liked the choke we learned, although from the same overhook there is one that's probably a lot easier.

Carl Showed some chokes.

Lapel chokes with palm up grip, palm down grip, and alternating.

A choke similar to the crucifix choke (http://grapplearts.com/Rolling-Crucifix-Choke.html). The difference was you put one leg over the head and pushed it one way and pull the lapel the other.

Jimmy went over posture in guard (http://frodojj.blogspot.com/2006/09/good-posture-in-guard.html) (in his own words).

Finished with near knee guard pass.

Rolling starting from standing.

Jeff- took a long time to get to the ground, I think he may have choked me once, can't remember the details.

Jimmy- got me with a rolling armbar, told me I was too stiff when standing. Got me in a triangle the next round.

Keylin (sp?)- Got me with an ude garame that I tried to fight out of for a long time, my shoulder is paying the price today.

Bluebelt guy (name?)- I was getting him off balance during the standup, he pulled guard, eventually he got me with an armbar.

Self Defense BJJ

Headlock defense

When uke grabs you in a headlock controll the arm they would punch with. Break their grip. Step in front of them and do a Ogosh (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm)i or Ogoshi grip Tai Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm) (if the guy is big having the wide base and your leg outside blocking his will make the throw easier).

Headlock where you can't break their grip.

Push forward on them. When they brace themself hit a Tani Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm). After getting them to the ground, step over to mount and crossface them to break the headlock. Take the arm and armbar.

Half Guard Sweeps.

From the lockdown position with double underhooks, uke sits up to try to pass. Sit up with him, take your far hand and cup it around his knee, push with your other arm while this pulls. Pin his far leg to avoid getting stuck in his half guard.

That doesn't work, come to your side, remove part of your hook and use it to twist uke's leg back, his leg does not want to bend that way. With your double underhooks roll him away.

Rolling

Scott- took his back, kept his posture broken down while he was in my guard. He had sidemount a time or tow.

Borris- He submitted me twice. I got a hip heist sweep on him. I was agressive but Borris is a wreslter who is really quick.

Tripod on head and pass either lapel (wrapped aroun uke's arm) or uke's arm/sleeve (http://www.grapplearts.com/Guard-Pass-Arm-Behind.html) under uke to other side. One side is immobilized, continue to pass on that side.

If you pull uke's arm under you can get a chicken wing.

Passing the guard to armbar. Keep you far underhook but walk around uke with near hand to opposite side, hug arm and finish.

Rolled with Chris: I took him down with Uchi Mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm). We rolled for a while and I did pretty good. Bobby taught BJJ class

Guard Passes:

Both hands under, grip belt and pull uke's upper back in the air, reach across with one hand and grab collar deep, drive in until leg is on the other side of head.

We added a choke to the end of this: After you pass keep your lapel grip, grab the near shoulder and pull down towards uke's hips, with the lapel hand push the elbow up at an angle.

Defending when uke goes for these passes, shrimp with elbows on mat, get legs over his arms and in his thighs.

A choke from there: grab deep on opposite collar, reach opposite arm over and under your own elbow, pull it up.

First guard pass we went over, you can't get lapel grip: Grab sleeve, lift uke up by the belt, get your far knee on his side, when uke comes down step other leg over head, you have an armbar.

Rolled with

Paul: He crushed me, I was aggressive and trying for stuff though.

Phil: Avoided a deep triangle, he got me with a collar choke, I was too concerned with passing the half guard and got caught. He also got an armbar (and maybe more on me).

Jimmy: Crushed me. Told me to work on posture when standing in guard, good posture, arms in.

BJJ

Drilled Hip Sweep, shrimp out of mount (http://lockflow.com/article_view.php?id=685) (to guard), bridge and roll (http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rcjones/bridgeandroll.html).

Self defense, bear hug from rear arms free: Drop hips and wrap your leg around outside of uke's. Put your hands on ground, let go of wrapped leg to pull uke's leg out, results in uke being on his ass. Drop down on his knee or twisting foot lock.

Side Controll:

Drill for controll while moving around. Put hand on uke's hip to prevent him from following you, keep your weight low on uke the whole time, go around to other side.

Paper cutter choke:
From side controll, your hand that is closer to uke's feet comes to uke's near side, grabs gi material near the shoulder (this helps controll that arm). With the other hand grab uke's far side collar material. Pull shoulder material down and angle across with forarm. This is a wind choke. KEEP WEIGHT ON UKE CONTROLLING HIM!

We did this last week, I didn't know it was called the paper cutter choke:

A choke from there: grab deep on opposite collar, reach opposite arm over and under your own elbow, pull it up.

Choke from collar stepping leg over and pulling on collar.

Chad was tested for blue belt. He wrestled everyone for one minute, some more than once. Bobby determined starting position. We started with me having Chad mounted. He shrimped to half guard, I passed to side controll and tried the paper cutter choke, I gave him enough space to get half guard back.

Chad did great, it was a brutal test. Congrats to Chad for his promotion to blue belt!

Rolling after class with Chris: I got him with a triangle, I had the giftwrap (arm across face) from back, he managed to get back into my guard, I jumped triangle and having controll of the one arm made it easy.

Drill- moving from one side side mount to the other, using the arm to block the hips from circling.

Side controll, uke swims under, trap his arm, pin his lower arm with leg, step to where his head is between your legs, kimura to him on his side.

Uke grabs belt, rip it forward, not up to break the grip.

This still doesn't work: Grab all the way through to you lapel with your arm that is closer to uke's legs. Swing to an armbar.

Side mount escape, uke has 2 on one (like he's going for americana or kimura), put that arm in his throat, other hand in his hip, push up and hip up, get your knee through and work back to guard.

I haven't trained in a while, first due to work and second due to a 4 day bout w/ da sheeits. I still want to train, but I don't think judo/bjj would go good with diareah. That could be a potential explosive situation. I quit one of my jobs so I will have more time to train soon (unless graduate school gets in the way of that:rolleyes:).

Judo

Grip fighting

Tsurikomi Goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/tsurikomigoshi.htm) use lapel arm to push yourself down/ uke up. I bent my arm and ended up doing Morote Seoi.

Sode Tsurikomi Goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/sodetsurikomigoshi.htm)- I liked this throw! Pulling with same sleeve hand but accross and with the other leg forward.

Randori

Pitt guy- I tried going from uchi mata to ouchi, Rick said I didn't kazushi and my hands didn't do anything.

Phil- threw me every which way

BJJ

Arm drags from guard

Arm drag to- Take the back

Arm drag to- roll over sweep

Arm drag to- Armbar

Arm drag to- Americana

Rolled with Jimmy- he kicked my ass

Rolled with Tyson- traded positions

Judo

How to move when you have a grip

sliding and not hopping

pull them with you

move to angles

loose wrists

sudden movements can off-balance the opponent

Mini in house shiai

Jordan- I got an Ippon with a hopping uchi mata

Jeff- Wazaried me twice for the Ippon

Rick- tossed me one good time

BJJ

Drilled armbar from guard

Triangle

Regain triangle when somebody stacks you- put your foot in hip and push yourself at an angle to re-apply

Triangle uke steps up switch to armlock

uke stands up you can't get armlock, roll over grap uke's leg and take him down

Rolled with Chris- traded positions, I took his back, no subs either way.

BJJ

Kimura class

Kimura from guard- get yourself at an angle to uke, use your leg to hold them down/ stop them from rolling out of it

Kimura- uke defends by going forward, roll to omo-plata. In Omo plata, keep one arm around uke to prevent him from rolling, drive his arm forward, not towards the middle of his back

Defend Kimura from half guard- step your knee over your elbow, place other hand on uke, pull down and rip arm in kimura out

Defend Kimura when you have uke in sidemount- same as above, step around to armbar

Wrestling- Jimmy in the pitt- beat 6 people including myself

Rolling-

Chris- I got three armbars, then I told him when I armbar on top get his elbow down to the mat to defend.

Bobby- fun roll, Bobby is really talented but slowed down his pace and allowed me to make some progress. Tapped me with a triangle and a foot lock.

Chad- Got me with a triangle and a nice combo- Americana-> armbar -> bicep slicer, which he taught me after.

Chokes

Okuri Eri Jime (http://judoinfo.com/images/shime/okuri_eri_jime.gif)

Randori to groundwork

Guy who I embarassed to not know his name- nothing really happened

Jeff- took me down with a double leg and maybe something else

In randori one of the things I need to improve is kazushi. I attemt things and Rick will tell me "your hands aren't doing anything". I need to remember to consciously pull on techniques.

BJJ- I was so hot I didn't think I could do the warmups. I just felt a ton of heat coming from my gi.

Half guard

Old School Sweep- Grabbing the foot, pass it to other hand, grab knee with free hand, put uke on back.

Plan B- if above does not work underhook the knee and roll them back in the opposite direction.

Half Guard Pass- pull uke's gi out and pass it under his arm, grab the gi with your arm coming under his head, keep the shoulder in uke's jaw, sit to the side and work the half guard down, put entangled knee to the ground and use the other foot to free your trapped foot.

Class went a bit late so I didn't stick around to roll.

Moving uchi komi for:

Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm)

Ouchi Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ouchigari.htm)

Koshi Guruma (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/koshiguruma.htm)

Ippon Seoinage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ipponseoi.htm)

Randori with Rick: Got tossed around

BJJ- no gi

Half guard series similar to that on monday (8/6)

Sweep: From half guard lockdown stretch leg back, unhook lockdown and take uke's ankle towards his but, this takes away his base, pull the knee of the other leg.

If this does not work roll the opposite way.

In all of this, once you have the underhook, keep your head and body close to uke, don't create space.

Rolled

Newer guy whose name I should know: Rolled, a few sweeps, no submissions.

Jeff: submitted me twice. Good roll.

walking uchi komi for:

Osoto Gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/osotogari.htm)

I feel I did good kazushi with my hands, probably need to work on more chest contact.

Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/sasaetsurikomiashi.htm)

Sometimes I swept too high on the leg.

O goshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm)

I was pulling my kazushi down to my stomach.

Worked on:

Uchi Mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm)

Then a combo for when uke blocks uchi mata:

Uchi mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm) to kouchi gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/kouchigari.htm).

Randori:

Jeff: Don't recall any big throws. I think Jeff scored a double leg.

Keylin: He hit a double leg.

Eric: Tossed me once real good, I bowed out early on this match, I was dizzy and my heart was racing.

I sat out of the first part of BJJ

BJJ

Streight Ankle Lock: Go on side so uke can't roll into you.

Kneebar: When passing the guard slide leg accross.

Rolled with:

Forget name (bigger new guy, well bigger than me) I controlled position for a while, in the end he did get mount on me.

Forget name (smaller new guy)- I got him once with an RNC, got some sweeps.

I don't know what my problem is in Judo. I feel I can get to good grips but don't ever do anything with them. Perhaps I need to be moving more from the time I get the grips. I feel I don't kazushi enough during Randori. Even during uchi komi I need to remember the high sleeve pull.

I also had that dizzy spell, I had these a few times in the past few weeks and blamed the heat, but last night was not too hot. I don't get it, I work out, drink plenty of water, don't smoke, eat healthy, and it seems the only activity that gets me like that is judo randori.

I'm generally pleased with my bjj progress. I can see results during randori. My big problem is the judo.

BJJ

Scissors sweep warm up

Ezekiel (sp?) choke

ankle pick

De La Riva guard sweeps

First sweep- let go of ankle and grab sleeve, bring your inner leg around uke's hooked leg, sit up to standing, basically a single leg takedown.

Second sweep- uke crowds you, get your legs inside and pull their ankles back

Third sweep- similar to first one, except to an angle and with both legs pushin in on uke's knee.

Rolling

Chris- Had good positions, he choked me once with a collar choke

Jimmy- Got me with americana

Craig- Got me once with an armbar, once with ude garame

Bobby- Choked me once

I did pretty good in the standing and even though I didn't get any submissions tonight I felt like I did alright.

MMA practice- my first one

Warmed up shrimping down the wall to a wall stand up, run to other side and repeat.

Armbar from guard drill

mount escapes

Keep elbows in and hands up (to block punches), elbows in front of uke's knees so when you buck uke forward his upper body goes, get one arm and the neck and bridge him over.

Worked that one against the wall (cage) bridging by walking our feet up.

Uke widens his legs for base, shrimp to guard

Drilled mount vs. mount escape

rolled with Borris, Jimmy, and someone I don't know.

Jimmy gave me some extra advice on maintaining mount. From grapevines, foot on hip, raise elbow to get knee under, have your elbow under his, shoulder in chin.

Jimmy also told me to controll the head more when uke is in guard in no gi. I went for a couple sweeps on him that he postured out of.

After practice I hit the bags a bit.

New account name! Wanted my first post to be here. Okay, so, I'll list goals:

To keep practicing judo/grappling 2-4 times a week, more of course preferred.

To improve my techinque in Judo, working on correct form in uchi komi, staying focused and really working that form into my neuromuscular system.

To keep grappling and working on using solid technique.

For fitness: I have been doing bodyweigh + jump rope + classes

when I start school I'll once again have access to weights. I want to start to lift HEAVY again. I hope to do a three day a week weight routine 1 pull 2 puch 3 squat (+ assists of course)

I enjoy lifting for power and since I haven't lifted heavy since december my strength has decreased considerably (technique and endurance have increased)

Of course Grad school and life may get in the way of some of this, but hopefully not for too long....

I'm going to start logging my lifts also, I'll be embarassed by my sad numbers as I haven't lifted heavy since 12/06.

My Old PRs

Deadlift- 345lbs

Squat- 240

Bench Press (db)- very very sad 75lb db in each hand

Ha ha, thanks, I've trained everything in mma before, just not at once:p At our club the Judo, Jiu Jitsu, and Muay Thai are all seperate groups that train in the same club, a few months ago they decided to have a mixed session on saturdays, with the focus on mma rules. Now there are some guys from other gyms coming to the mma class!

8/20 South Hills Judo

Warm up

uchi komi and throws for

Uchi Mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm)

For uchi mata I need to work on sleeve pull and getting my hips lower

You attemp uchi mata, uke has narrow base, go for Tai Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm)
For Tai Otoshi I need to remember that this throw needs space to work, I shouldn't pull uke on me. I also need to get lower on this one. Rick compared finishing this throw to chopping wood.

Randori:

Kevin- got one kouchi gari (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/kouchigari.htm)

Jordan- no scores

Phil- Threw me around

BJJ-

Warm up with armbar, triangle, omo plata flow drill

Guard pass to far side armbar, yank up on underhooked arm

kesa gatame to mount to armbar- 2 ways

One push arm down post on far arm and kind of jump to mount- one arm is in one out, so if uke rolls you you have an easy triangle

two thead arm under leg, grab sleeve, pull on sleeve and swing your legs over

Rolled with Chris- traded positions a lot, I got the best of the takedowns, he got me with a guillotene choke, I defended for a long time from his open guard, I was stacking him then he rolled me over to mount and finished.

Tai Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm)

Pull the sleeve, step behind, make sure the rear hand is pushing (in the direction you want uke to go), and get low.

Randori

Jimmy (1st time): I got Jimmy with a couple foot sweeps that planted him on his butt.

Rick: Threw me all around

Jimmy again: This time he had dominant grips and threw me

BJJ Jimmy Taught: No gi

Guard submission series

Arm Press (http://web1.vattnet.com/judo/katamewaza/udegatame.html) from guard- shrimp to side, one knee presses uke's chest, the other his back, push the shoulder back

Shrimp to side the same way, far foot from hip to bicep to jump triangle

That doesn't work roll to omo plata

Omo plata doesn't work underhook uke's leg and roll them over

Rolled with Kevin- traded positions, no subs

Rolled with ?- traded positions, I think he might have caught me with something don't remember??

Team Balance BJJ at South Hills Judo

Before class did some light squats (100 lbs on a bar that I don't know the weight of, old school bar. Actually the plates at the judo club only go up to 25lbs. That's why I'll start powerlifting next week and haven't been at the club. Plus the floor probably isn't good for dropping deads) and dynamic stretching (leg swings/arm swings/neck & body rotations)

Drilled armbar from guard

Drilled Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi (http://judoinfo.com/images/nauta/sasaetsurikomiashi.htm)

Uke stacks, you can

a) grab the far knee and roll to a face down armbar

b) underhook the near leg and swing the far leg for a sweep

Worked pendulum sweep from guard

Pendulum sweep to omo plata

Rolled with a newer guy, armbarred him once. Explained to him the importance of the far underhook for sidemount after I took his back.

Warm up- shrimp to wall, wall crawl, sprint repeat- 3 min

half guard- on side with underhook, use other side hand to block punches from the other hand (around the bicep)

if uke throws with the underhooked hand, swim to the back

block punch from guard, opposite hand comes under and back crawl

half guard sweeps, (old school and plan b) same as submission wrestling version except buck uke forward to avoid punches and get the foot faster

Sparring

Stand up vs. Kevin
I landed some good punches, so did he, we both scored leg kicks, I reached for too many of his. the last time i was training standup was October for a Sanshou fight, he told I could throw him if I caught it, I was more focused on blocking with the legs, Kevin landed some really good body kicks

Rolled with Craig (or Greg?) he got me once with an anaconda

Stand up with Bobby, traded punches and leg kicks, landed some good punches, ate a lot of kicks, I gassed out early in this round. I'm not used to doing stand up stuff.

Kimura when uke defends (from north south): Uke is grabbing his own thigh or his hands together. Trap his hand down with your elbow, lift up on his.

Went over arm triangle from kesa gatame.

You should contemplate adding front squats to the mix, the core strength they give will help you in judo.

Chins while gripping a towel, or better yet a GI, are great too.

I've done that also, great for grips. Right now I'm trying to build up strength. I don't have very much time to train judo or bjj due to grad school. I hope to be able to train once a week in judo. Getting in and out of the gym early in the morning (to lift) doesn't get in the way of school, work, or homework. Driving a half hour each way for a two hour class and rolling after class does get in the way :(

Its a work in progress, like everything else, take your time and don't rush it but remember the key to building strength is to progressvly overload the muscles, regardless of what system you choose, that must be the "goal".

w/ ? - Did good position wise, he swept me once but I swept him back. Had a gift wrap at the end but got no submissions.

w/ John- did good stand up, he had an awesome open guard I just could not pass

w/ other john (no gi)- did alright on the stand up, gave up position and took it back. No submissions. Had a tight overhook on the standup and broke posture down.

While I didn't 'throw' anybody standing up, I also didn't get taken down and the matches went to the ground on my terms kinda?! I'm kinda happy about that.

Mike told me I was muscling a lot and needed to use more technique

Weighed myself today-175lbs, and I was actually the heavyweight of class tonight

Worked out with Kevin (and would have worked out w/ Steve, but they gave him a hard time about his ID (his is medical center, not university)

Boxing
I don't know how many rounds, probably 4 or 5, 2 min with 1 min between.

Kevin had really good defense, it was really hard to hit his head, I got some good body shots. I was moving good, Kevin is really mobile, I was using long strides to cut off the ring. He said I telegraphed my hooks.

Grappling
I got Kevin with 2 armbars and a triangle. Kevin got some good reversals and good escapes, I didn't get submitted at all.

I wanted to get into the weights gym after this, but time wouldn't allow it. I'm missing deadlift day, and Sunday can't get in the gym. Oh well, there's always Monday (I haven't lifted since Wed). Since I'm trying to focus on strength I don't like to skip these workouts, but I also wanted an opportunity to spar.

Goal for deadlift: >300
Goal for MA- Train at least once a week in grappling/sparring/alive
Fitness goal- start doing 3 min rounds on jumprope
Goal for upper body- gain strength overall- bench 80lb db's within the next couple weeks

These should be do-able, except maybe the sparring/grappling once a week, school is killer:(

Supplementing: I've been taking creadrive (5.25 g creatine, 1000mg taurine, and carbs) from GNC pre-workout and accelerade post workout. I just ordered a new custom blend from trueprotien.com (http://www.trueprotein.com). It has the creatine included with carbs and high grade hydrolyzed whey protein (most easily digested) all in one supplement. I also added bcaa's. This will be my post workout drink, which I don't know if I like the idea of creatine post-workout, not that it's a bad thing, I just think it's better pre-workout.

What I ordered:

Custom Mix + FORMULA
Hydrolyzed Whey Protein High Grade 30%
Whey Protein Isolate Cold-Filtration 10%
Dextrose 25%
Maltodextrin 25%
Creatine Monohydrate Powder 5%

I injured my ankle last week, it was somewhat better. Grappling made it hurt a little more last night. Deadlifts today didn't seem too bad on it. Oh, and from now on I'm going to try to have one high intensity day a week, and the other two days have slightly more volume (like 5 reps), I think this will lead to faster recovery, better form, and less taxing on the neurological system. Next week the bench press will be the high intensity exercise. I'll try to get as close as I can to the 1rm. The next week squats, the next week deads.

Later in the day:

Went back to the gym, there was a sign that the mat room was reserved for the "wrestling club" (recreational wrestling group), but the sign was still up from yesterday, the club doesn't meet on wednesday.

I did some breakfalls, some shrimping, and some more stretching

Panther Grappling

When Jimmy was videotaping an instructional I rolled with two of the guys, which is good because I had to cut out early.

1st guy wrestler: Got the takedown and was really fast, scrambled well. He submitted me, my poor memory can't remember how???

2nd guy: I got him with an armbar.

Class started

Went over how to pull guard: Pull down on the sleeves, put on foot in hip in fall back.

Went over Tomoe Nage (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/tomoenage.htm)

Went over uchi mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm)

To the groud:

Went over triangle

Triangle to ude garame (americana) (http://judoinfo.com/quiz0297_2.htm)

This was part of a lockflow, as I said I needed to cut out early.

The lockflow was: Triangle to ude garame to omo plata to sweep to armbar to triangle, Jimmy shot an instructional, he has to edit it, maybe after he gets it up online I 'll post a link to it! It's a really cool sequence.

Pull day, lower intensity higher volume

I found out I was doing deadlifts wrong, I was squatting down way to low, and was basically lifting with my legs, so I watched some powerlifting videos and corrected my form accordingly. I used to do them right but lost it somewhere along the way....

Wrestled with Matt. No submissions either way. Matt is strong and gets good positions, I had to work on escapes.

I'm going to try to work this combination: Ouchi gari to osoto gari (http://youtube.com/watch?v=JLGEbOaVFLc&feature=related) both in shadow uchi komi and in class. Perhaps this week I'll have some time to get to the judo club, that would be sweet, it's been a long time!

South Hills Judo Club

First time at judo in a long time

Went over Tai Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm)

Doing tai otoshi get hip to side so that you don't pull uke into you. Rick said "I like for there to be enough room to see uke's belt". Rick also said "you're going to throw uke where his big toe is pointing, so kazushi him that way".

Went over Uchi Mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm)

Went over combination

Tai Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm) that uki steps out of into an Uchi Mata (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/uchimata.htm)

I need to remember to actually try the tai otoshi, when uke steps around and comes up land the uchi mata.

Randori

Jeff: We both did well, we ended up on the ground twice, once by my doing (kind of), once by Jeff's doing (kind of), nothing clean either way.

Phil: Threw me every which way. Told me not to try to do stuff without an inside grip.

BJJ guy, don't know his name: I landed two Kouchi garis (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/kouchigari.htm)on him.
In the last 30 seconds he turned into a throw and I countered with a Tani Otoshi (http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taniotoshi.htm)

Grappling practice at Pitt

Jimmy was late, so got some rolling in before the official practice began.

Rolled with wrestler guy: (?), he took me down, got me with an armbar.

Judo randori with judo guy: (?), got him twice with kouchi gari, once with ouchi gari, he got me once with tomoe nage

Rolled with Jesse (finally remember someone's name!): We ended up in a weird position, he had me in half guard, kind of, my other leg was around his head, I grabbed my ankle behind my back and tried to choke him, didn't work, eventually I was about in a split and he got me with a toe lock.

Practice was relaxed, some sweeps and some takedowns.

Rolling after practice

Different wrestling guy (?) Traded positions, he eventually got me in an armbar.
