As with all seminars I host, these workshops are hands on and open to any and all practitioners regardless of style, rank, or experience. Come with an open mind and a notebook and be prepared to have fun and train hard!

Session I: Subtle Science of Sacrifice
Saturday 12noon – 3pm
Sacrifice throws are some of the most over looked, least understood techniques in martial arts. In this seminar Tim will offer subtle details to make sacrifice throws a truly effortless part of your training. Whether you are a competitive Judo, Sambo, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu player, or you simply want to be a more prepared fighter on the street this seminar will answer many questions as to “how” to safely apply these techniques, as well as build your confidence in executing sacrifice throws and takedowns.
• Learn the principles of the technique, not just empty movements
• Understand the importance of dead angles, joining centers, and how to utilize these principles in your own practice
• Improve your grappling game
• Understand the technique so you can defend against the technique

SESSION II: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Saturday 5-8pm
Learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from one of the best! Tim has proven his skills on numerous occasions winning the Copa Pacifica seven times, the Pan Am’s twice, and taking Silver in the World Championships 2005 held in Brazil! This seminar will improve your BJJ game adding more tools to your arsenal, or teaching you the basics of fighting on the ground if you are new to this popular art.
• Various submissions will be explored and taught in great detail
• Learn the importance of hip placement and control
• Improve your ground game as a grappler, mixed martial artist, or for self defense situations
• Tim will combine principle, theory, and application into one coherent workshop

SESSION III: Xing Yi Fighting Animals (Hawk & Sparrow)
Sunday: 10am – 1pm
Tim continues to explore the various fighting applications and energies of the 12 Animals found within Xing Yi, with this seminar on the Hawk and Sparrow. Tim will lead us through the underlying principles of the Hawk and Sparrow in Xing Yi which are some of the most intricate and complex in the curriculum, and offer numerous variations of strikes, throws, and grappling. In Xing Yi one does not mimic the animal itself, but rather the fighting attitude or energy of that given animal. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO KNOW XING YI OR THE 12 ANIMALS TO BENEFIT FROM THIS SEMINAR! Tim will NOT be teaching any of the actual animal forms! These teachings will transfer easily into whatever your base art may be.
• Deepen your understanding of the principles found within Xing Yi
• Apply these principles and techniques to your own fighting art with simplicity
• Become a more well rounded fighter and grappler

SESSION IV: Sun Bagua Pt. I (Single and Double Palm Change)
Sunday: 2pm-5pm
Sun Lu Tang was one of the most influential Chinese Martial Art teachers, fighters, and historians of the Golden Age of Chinese Martial Arts (late 1800’s). A respected master of Xing Yi and Taiji, Sun learned Bagua from Cheng Tinghua, one of the most respected teachers in Bagua, to deepen his understanding of the fighting arts. Cheng Tinghua was a master of Shuai Chiao so naturally his Bagua incorporates a number of throws, sweeps, and takedowns making it one of the most effective arts to apply on the street in the 21st century.
Tim will teach us basic circle walking with the single and double palm changes, along with all applications found within the subtle movements. Join us for an afternoon of learning the Sun Family Bagua Palm from Tim Cartmell, student of Sun Jian Yun (Sun Lu Tangs daughter), and Sun Bao An.
The single and double palm change are considered to be the core of the system of Bagua. Sun simplified his arts by discarding what was wasted or useless, maintaining the integrity of a combative martial system tested in many different scenarios throughout Sun’s bodyguard career.

About the Instructor:
Tim Cartmell has become one of the most sought after teachers of martial combative’s in North America. Spending over 10 years in Taiwan and China training with some of the best fighters the Chinese Martial Arts had to offer, as well as fighting (and winning) several full contact fights. Tim then came back to California to immerse himself in training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because he realized that although his stand up fighting was good, he was ignorant on the ground. Eight years later he has become Cleber Luciano’s only black belt with numerous wins at the Copa, along with silver in the Mundials (World Championships of BJJ in Brazil) in 2005.
Over the past 30 years Tim Cartmell has studied the arts of Xing Yi (Hebei / Shanxi), Bagua (Luo Dexiu’s disciple), San Soo, Taiji (Sun / Chen / Yang), as well as various systems of grappling.
Tim has authored “Effortless Combat Throws,” co-authored “Passing the Guard” and “Xing Yi Nei Gong,” as well as translated Zhao Da Yuan’s pinnacle joint manipulation book “Practical Chin Na,” Dong Zhong Yi’s classic Shuai Chiao text “The Method of Chinese Wrestling,” and the only English translation of Sun Lu Tang’s historic “A Study of Taijiquan.” His current project is a series of DVD’s on Clinch fighting, and stand up grappling.
Tim continues to teach fulltime in Huntington Beach, CA. offering lessons in mixed martial arts incorporating the stand up techniques of Bagua, Xing Yi, and Taiji along with the ground strategy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to create the Shen Wu system of modern day combative’s.
