I'm 6'2 and 175 lbs. - pretty lean. Most of the kung fu uniforms (pants and tops) I try on fit me like a hospital robe. There's a local shop that carries basically one brand, and it doesn't work for me. I'd like to order one online, but I hope to avoid the same problem. Is there anyone else with roughly the same build that has found a brand/style that fits well? What are some good online martial arts gear shops?

Thanks.

I had a student with your problem. He was tall and skinny. A size 7 would fit him length-wise, but he looked like he was swimming in them. We tried a number of brands since there were lot of MA stores in CA. Same problem each one. Sadly his only choice was to get them tailored. Tailoring cost him $15 for the top(this was back early 90's, it may be more now). The pants he just left it loose. You may have to do just the same.

Or try a brand called Fist. Beijing Imports carries them.

where are you?

do you have to wear a 'kung fu' top?

if not, just go with the #7's from martialarts.mart...they's shrink down enough not to look too baggy.

if you need a top, check with Jonie Uniforms as they will costomize.

I'm not sure I can recommend Jonie's pants though...the fabric is good but the drawstrings ripped out of every one I purchased for myself or my students.

but, the only place around for a wide variety of styles of uniforms.

Greetings,

As far as pants are concerned you may want to take a look at sweatpants. They are stretchable and some of the better brands are way superior to the conventional kung fu pant (sometimes even the cheap ones are better). They also retain warmth really well.

Martial Arts Mart (http://www.martialartsmart.net) has plenty! Simply take your new uniform to a tailor and he can easily alter it to your individual specifications! Looking for Kung Fu outfits? Here (http://www.martialartsmart.net/Uniforms_Kung_Fu.html) you go!;)

ugh, sweatpants...my little friends would just die in the heat.

the only time I've worn sweatpants was, well, never...I've put on some duofold thermals when practicing in a foot of snow in 20 degrees

I like loose fit or a little over size or one size up.

we may move about easliy and more freely.

if it is too fit or tight, we may break or tear the sleeve line easily etc.

a belt around the waist may be a better idea to make over size clothes look slim down.

wear whatever that is easier to work out with, dun mind the look too much.

I purchased these pants http://www.martialartsmart.net/11-1700x.html, they are good for the price but fit me a little tight. Personally I prefer wearing kickboxing shorts as opposed to pants, these are great, especially for the price. http://www.martialartsmart.net/6011rk.html

tailoring it yourself is easy-when I was younger (before I "filled out", meaning before I discovered beer) I had broad shoulders,a short torso and narrow waist as well as long arms. If I bought shirts that fit my shoulders and arm length, it was a sack. My GF at the time used to sew, and she would tailor all my shirts. It's easy.
Put the shirt on, inside out, and pin it in how you want it-try it on regular-watch the pins! and if it looks cool, run it through a sewing machine, or do it by hand. Done. No cutting is needed, unless you want to get technical, then get a tailor.

Next week, we'll talk about how to make a lovely table centerpiece arrangement by using sais and butterfly knives. And fellows-don't throw those old groin cups away. They make wonderful holders for potpourrie!:D

Because Oso and SaintSage beat me to the Crotche(tm) kick. :o

I'm far shorter than you, switters, but suffered from a similar problem before I earned my beer...I mean 'qi'...belly. It's all about tailoring. Tailoring isn't that expensive. I'm sure there's a local place near you that could handle the job. Just make sure to tell them to keep it loose enough so you don't constrict your shoulders or hips.

Thanks Oso and SaintSage!
