We are cooperating with an online martial arts friends network - iMartial (http://www.imartial.com/index.aspx). It's sort of like MySpace for martial artists. It's also how we are managing the Tiger Claw Elite Championships (http://www.tigerclawelite.com/) online. Anyone can sign up and post pictures, blogs, videos, all sorts of web community functions. You don't have to be part of TCEC to play. And it's free. Check it out. Let me know here what you think.

For more on the Tiger Claw Elite Championships, see our TCEC thread on the TC Media Forum (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=757868).

I noticed that there is an option for writing your "team" (I assume for competition.) What would be really great is if an account type was set up for individual schools, sort of like (and I hate to reference it) the groups you can join on myspace.

I knew all of you could give some intelligent feedback. Keep it coming.

The webmaster behind iMartial signed up for an account yesterday under the user name 'iMartial'. He told me he was very appreciative of all of your commentary. I'm hoping he'll contribute to this forum and answer your questions directly. As for Minghequan's sign in issue, he couldn't find any error, so it's probably a mistake in the confirmation blank. He encourages Minghequan to try once more and if the problem persists, he'll delve into it further. Since iMartial's account is now active, my work belaying messages here is done (although I'll probably keep ttt-ing this for a spell).

I like NJM's suggestion about groups. We need a KFM forum group.

you know of course that this is a step in the wrong direction. i think a martial forum should propagate more face to face meetings than KFM actually has. yet another place to live vicariously through a monitor isn't necessarily a good thing.

it's used to search. You can search for people that train certain styles. the search uses the same checkbox interface that you use when you make your profile.

GeneChing

One of the major functions of iMartial is tournament registration. Of course, what style you are is very important for open tournament registration. There's this whole admin side that's available to tournament promoters that allows them to collect registration for competitors, volunteers, judges, anyone participating in the tournament, and categorize it to their custom needs. There's even a function to print out badges for the specific events. It has potential to be quite powerful. One of the main reasons that we're cooperating with iMartial is for these registration functions. It's how some of our TCEC events (http://www.tigerclawelite.com/)are being registered. Take a look at the online registration for next weekend's RDK Internationals (http://www.imartial.com/event_details.aspx?eid=31).

GeneChing

There are a few interface problems that I think need to be ironed out too. One function that bothers me is the 'friend invites'. I like that it keeps track of the friends that you have invited, but it bothers me that you have to delete them from that roster after they have been accepted. That should be automatic. Another thing that bothers me is that after you have read a received message, it still shows that you have a new message on your account. Once the message is read, that alert should be turned off. I think the only way to turn it off is to manually delete the message from your mailbox. That's bothersome if you want to save the message. You have to make this mental note of how many messages you have in your mailbox and constantly subtract that from what your new message alert reports on your account.

I'll remind the iMartial developer to keep an eye on this thread, although he's probably doing that already.

I really appreciate you taking our advice and making those changes!

Maybe something you should look at maybe later on would be to establish subsections. For example, if I checked the "kung fu" box under styles, it would open up a new box that had checkmarking areas for "northern shaolin" "southern shaolin/hung gar" "northern mantis" "wing chun" etc. instead of just grouping them differently.

great updates - a few suggestions to add as styles:
"fencing" - if you have other "western" martial sports such as boxing & wrestling, then it would make sense, IMHO, to list this as well...
"southern mantis" - if you have "northern mantis", you should also have this, as it is a completely different style
"Bok Mei (White Eyebrow)" & "Hung Ga"- these are two of the more important / widely praticed southern Chinese styles: if you have Wing Chun and Choy Lit Fut as sperate arts, these would be reasonable to add

GeneChing

...the categorization of Chinese styles is Pandora's box. Open it carefully.

Another trivial comment: You can invite a friend that has already invited you. You can also invite a friend that is already in your friend network. Most web communities will alert you when you invite a friend as to the status of your relationship - meaning when you click the 'add friend' request confirmation, it'll state that this member has already invited you or that you already have a request pending. What's more, you can send a friend request to someone that is already in your friend network. This is really cumbersome and will get worse at the friend networks grow. Right now, with so few people really playing with iMartial beyond the forum, no one has more than a dozen friends. On MySpace, people have thousands of friends. For that many friends, iMartial would need to a more resilient system to accommodate the load, lest we get bogged down in redundancies.

Well in that case we need to clarify all the kenpo styles and its derivitives:

Kajukenbo
American Kenpo
Shaolin Kenpo
Won Hop Keun Do

:D

Then lets not forget all the Korean Arts:

Hwa Rang Do
Kuk Sul Won
Hapkido
Moon Moo Do
Tang Soo Do

Then we have all the Japanese arts:

Aikido
JiuJitsu
Aikijitsu
Wado Ryu
Kendo
Isshin Ryu
Shotokan
Okinawan Kenpo
Shorinji Kempo
Shorin Ryu
Iaido
Ninjitsu

There is also an art missing. That is the French Savate.

Nah.....If it were up to me. I would just have it:

Korean
Chinese
Pilipino
Japanese
Polynesian Etc.
Other

Then have a box where one can fill out the actual style they are in. Give them maybe 3-4 blocks where they can do this on their profile.

Most of the previous members were from the Tiger Claw Elite Championships (http://www.tigerclawelite.com/), but few of them have bothered to upload their pics. It's great to see so many KFMers really test the envelope of this site. Thanks for your excellent input.

We need more single hot blonde or redhead chicks on iMartial. Those above 18yo, unless they live in TX. Age of consent is 17 here. :D

Yes I am a dirty old(will close to middle age) man.

Anyone else notice that if you set a new picture as your profile default it won't update in other people's friends lists?

it asks you when you started training and when you started competing and then it outputs the assumption tat you still compete or that you have trained the stated styles for the amount of time since those dates.

This presenst a kind of false information.

I for instance haven't practiced any Karate at all since the 1980's!
And I haven't been in a regular martial arts competition cycle since before and about the same time, although i have been to a few in the 90's.

anyway, it will leave a lot for questioning i guess, lol

I had my wife take the horse and standing one, both with the rings on...you know, for effect... lol

it certainly says "I do chinese martial arts" like no other pose.
