Hi everyone,

I'm planning on starting Kung Fu training soon and I found a private instructor near me that teaches Liu He Men (Six Harmony) style Kung Fu. I'm not that knowledgeable on the subject and I was wondering if you guys can tell me whether this is a worthy style to learn? The teachers (David Culp) website is http://sixharmonykungfu.com does he seem like a good teacher? If there isn't enough info on the site, what kind of things should I ask?

I appreciate your responses :)

According to the site he learned from a disciple of Wan Lai Sheng, so it should be Kosher. Liuhequan is a northern longarm system and very respectable. If you're studying with the Wan Lai Sheng branch then there should be a very heavy emphasis on application too.

i have seen 6 combinations and nature boxing before and obviously when practised well theyare excellent arts

my advice would be to train with them for a 4-5 months (or more until u feel u have grasped the basics)
then try other styles and cross train so u can compare the 2
if u like both then train both

either way find what suits you
if u like what is taught stay if u dont then leave

also take into account weither or not u are getting a good work out from the lesons (that means actual effort blood sweat and tears)
if u find yourself at the end of the lesson not feeling very worn out or kind of indifferent

thats an inkling that their training isn't enough

whatever you do do not delude yourself into thinking that these guys are the best around and stay there for 10-20 years in the belief that thats all you need

everyone finds their own way

heres a few bruce quotes that i think are imortant

"take what is useful, discard what isn't"

and "the perfect form of self defence differs for each person"

enjoy the journey :D

Hi Orange

I study Liu He and Zi Ran Men under Master Liu De Ming inheritor of Grand Master Wan Lai Shen and Master Hong Sheng Fu's lineage. Check our site for some more info if need be it may help:

http://www.ziranmen.com/

Liu He is a great system which builds really solid foundation but it quite dynamic at the same time...prepare for sore legs. This style will set you up for any system well, even if you decide to switch to something else.

The Zi Ran Men info looks a little patchy at best but he may not have chosen to post much info on the site so I could be wrong. You need to be careful when people say they have Zi Ran Men and proceed with caution.

Alot of people went to Wan Lai Shen when he was very old, frail and poor...very sad but true. The Grandmaster needed money and was handing out discipleships like speeding tickets at the race track...and of course people took advantage.

So when people say they studied under Wan Lai Shen you need to take it with a grain of salt to an extent as he saw alot of students towards the end of his life.

The Liu He should be fine as Wan Lai Shen would not teach you any Zi Ran Men or Natural Boxing without at least 10 years of this style under your belt.. to build the foundation for the Zi Ran Men which shifts more internal.

Which is why the knowledge of Zi Ran Men in most cases is patchy at best as most people who claim to have studied under him were with him for short periods of time. You may find things become vague in this area so ask lots of questions as the natural boxing side is not just some vague concept.

Times have now changed and in our school Master Liu teaches Liu He and Zi Ran Men at the same time......which is lucky for us :D

There is not much messing round with the Zi Ran Men guys they are real fighters - I guess this is largely a result of Wan Lai Shen's legacy who was always running round testing his skill.

My final suggestion..if you are not 100% sure on the knowledge base you are better to shift to something where you have no doubts other wise you could waste a few years. Better to get it right from the start.

Thats my 2 cents..good luck and have fun :)
