No...no...no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.

Easily it flows, quick to join you in a fight.

What'd really be funny is if those 'marks' had better Kung Fu then you.

I used to think I was God's Gift to many endeavors. I always seemed to get cut down a notch or two at the University of Hard Knocks. I don't think that someone being better than someone in some human activity is the issue.

A good kung fu system with a good practitioner = a complete martial artist. There is no real need to go looking outside of it for good self defense.

Bro, this is physical culture. Being better than someone means just about everything in this game. How can you teach someone who's etter then you. The only exception here is the old guy who can't do it now, but USED TO.

Mathematics is pretty much the same way, as is learning a foreign language.

I just don't like this guy making assumptions, dumb ones at that. I qualify as one of these 'marks', so I'm replying. This guys doesn't even 'get it', and here's how I know.

Traditional Kung Fu is not like MMA. Kung Fu training develops a specific body type, and specific movement patterns (footwork, body mechanics, Jing training), technique has always been more of an afterthought, especially compared to MMA. You don't automatically 'lose' you Kung Fu just because you start doing Judo instead of Shuai Chiao, or Muay Thai instead of Tai Chi. That ****s stays with you and everything new you learn is built on that foundation.

I throw. My technique comes from Judo, my power comes from Shuai Chiao. My grip fighting is based off tui shou, my footwork, well that's inner door stuff. The point is, you do what it takes to become better. It's that simple. This has nothing to do with looking outside of anything. I haven't been worried about 'self defense' for a long time. I learned how to handle myself years ago. There's a lot more reasons to do this stuff then you might get mugged by a terrorist some day.

ok im done ranting.

i dont hate bjj. i think it is good for sports fighting. and grappling tournaments. it has skills that are developed. it is also good for controlled situations like bouncers or police to learn some if need be.

as for me having best kung fu, its not the best. fighting isnt either.

mk why cant cma be simple and easy to use right away?

i mean i see where you are coming from water dragon.

my sifu incorprates judo take downs and throws into the training along with the shuia jaio he kinda mixes everything and calls it kung fu.
cause a throw is a throw, they all have the same result, is it worth argueing its judo or chinese or bjj if they all have the same effect.
we dont do much ground work though, we do a lot of training to prevent going to the ground i know that.

Because of the general training methodology.

What did you do you first day in kung fu? Stances? Learn a Tan Tui road?

My first MMA class I was hitting Thai pads and learning guard sweeps.

Ditch the stance work. Ditch the weapons. Limit the focus on forms. Incorporate more heavy bag and mitt training. Partner work. Partner work. Partner work. Partner work. And by partner work I don't mean 2-man sets.

Then it can be quick and easy to use right away.

Most of the techniques work. The training methodology is antiquated.

If you have 10 years, then keep plugging along. But if you want to get good fast, you need to modernize.

Train to train, not to defend. That is the spirit of kung fu.

i see where your coming from.

did you school have different nights? forms and basics night and fighting night. or did they just do whatever. did your teacher make you have to do the whole curriculum and not just one thing? when i trained with my sifu at his school, we'd have different nights for people who want to focus on different things. some of the fighting guys i would never ever see on forms and basics night. (not fighting basics, ie stances and such). they all got good too.

who said everyone trains their kung fu 100% in an antiquated fashion?

i know a lot of schools do. hell even my first kungfu teacher started me out this way. but it was a bit mixed up. he did half old school half new school training methods.

i know my first day in wing chun i was hitting sand bags (fist, elbow, various forarm/backfist), doing partner drills, and worked on the wooden man. along with learning the first form, but we all know how easy siu lim tao is to learn.

i could take someone who never trained before and use only material ive learned in kungfu and teach them to fight relatively quickly.

as many others state, its all in how you train. but i think we should all know that by now.

so the question is, how DO you train?

even if you attend a school that works in an old fashion, how often are you there? do you do 100% of your training only in a class? do you train as realisticly as you can when your NOT in kungfu class?

it falls on the practitioners shoulders to be in the right environment.
