Also just to mention the Mei Hua system or Moy Fa also has a Fa Kuen (Hua Quan) form similar to the set practised in the Chi Sim Weng Chun system.

Whats interesting is the Mei Hua system is a Northern Shaolin system whereas Chi Sim is of course a Southern.

And also the Mei Hua system predates Wing Chun(even on the accounts of Wing Chun being devised in the late 1600's) by atleast a few hundred years.

So it could be possible that the Fa Kuen form was a preliminary requirement at the Shaolin Temple.

Sorry none of this pertains directly to Wing Chun or Weng Chun but I thought you may find it intersting.

Zach

Fa Kuen is a Shaolin type form, but do not belongs to Weng/Wing Chun system.
Fa Kuen form (known from GM Chu Chong Man) comes from Wong's family. It was his favorite form of 3 Floral Fists sets.

Hi Brothers,

Fa kuen has been linked in some form or another to the WCK/Weng Chun systems for a very long time (early 1900s, Imo). In fact there are a group of forms, that show up frequently, connected to the Praising/Eternal spring systems. Fut Jeung, Fa Kuen, and Jong kuen are the most notable.

Fa Kuen in particular is difficult to get a ~Full~ grasp of, as there are several diffearnt forms, practised by differant lineages, all using the same name. Currently, just within WCK circles we have:

Chu Chong man Fa Kuen - 3 floral fist sets - from Wong Gar. Supposedly from Chi Sim.

Andreas Hoffmanns Fa Kuen - 1 set w/Spiraling Tai Chi style mechanics. Supposedly based on the Knives.

Chan Gar Fa Kuen - 9 section form

Cho Gar Fa Kuen - Siu Lien Tao applicatin set based on 8 directions and neutralization skills. Several differant histories surrounding this form. Some trace it to Ng Mui, others to Chi Shim, and yet others to the Cho Family.

Yip Kin Siu Fa Kuen and Dai Fa Kuen

A common theme to "Fa Kuen" is the ability to "flow". Fa Kuen is sometimes translated as "Variable fist" to imply the flowing ability and water like nature. It has a common theme of working in all of the 8 directions. And also many versions of Fa Kuen tend to focus on neutralization of the opponents force.

Wong Kiew Kit suggests that the Fa Kuen he learned from Cho Gar comprised what he calls "Surprise" attacks, using the ideas of "Mo Ying". This is something he has stated on his web site, not my personal speculation.

As Zach mentioned Fa Kuen shows up, in some form or another in many differant CMA. In the future we hope to actually put out a DVD comparing the numerous versions of Fa Kuen attatched to the WCK systems.
