For your dining and dancing pleasure. (http://hapkido.netro.com.au/Technique.html)

I really liked Defense Against Turning Kicks, as I was accidently on the receiving end of one of those.

the funny thing is that they throw one punch and let them come in to throw them. i did hapkido for 5 years and got the gold medal here in oz when i was 15yrs old.

some locks are ok, but half just doesnt seem to work when the sh!t goes down.

hehehe turning back kick was my favourite! :)

I like that heavy bag on the ground thing.

Thanks rogue, I think I will surprise some of my TKD buddies with this one during sparring.
I’m sure Master Kim will be annoyed with it though.

Peace.

But the side kick was aimed off to the defender's side. How does the technique work if you've got to move into his side kick. It seems there is an "off angle" movement missing there.

I did like the two defenses against the spinning hook kicks, but how many of us face a guy that throws those thing out without any kind of a set up? Unless you spar with the over eager beginners that just learned the tech. :)

I think he means to cut off the guy's sidekick by steepin in behind the knee of the chambering leg. That could work.

That's true, but the guy extends his side kick before the defense starts. I've met a few guys that could blast a pretty stiff side kick in your ribs, even if you're moving in before he fires his kick. I'm talking trapping range. In fact, I got hit by one last Saturday. It almost knocked the wind out of me. I think I would agree with the tech more if there was some kind of redirect (with a low hooking block perhaps) on the kicking leg, or at least an off angling step first. The takedown is clean, though.

jag . . "It seems there is an "off angle" movement missing there"

i thought the same thing watching it in quicktime, but when i downloaded it you actually can see a small angle step just before the throw.

i have some comments to make but i'm walking some moron through their internet setup now and they started noticing i'm not paying attention to them.

the only reason why there aren't more shootings related to dumb customers calling their isps is because of our wonderful friend the hold button.

i had allot of questions on some of the clips until i downloaded them and watched them in wmp. everything looks like crap in quicktime.

i was going to comment on the one where he knocked a guy down by doing a spinning hook kick to his opponents spinning hook kick until i read "good for demos." i agree . .. it looked smooth (though obviously not practical) and i think i might actually work on it with my buddy so we can look cool in front of chicks.

i do have a question about kick defense 3 though. as the spinning hook is launched he drops low and does a spinning sweep. this would obviously work, but it seems too uneconomical to be worth risking. wouldn't it be easier and just as effective to drop low and take out their ankle or knee without spinning? even if you were practicing with a friend and were worried about striking a joint you could push kick pretty much anywhere on their leg to get the same effect. i guess if you really think your quick enough the sweep would be good.

punch defense 1 also seemed like allot of wasted movements. he does a right round house to the stomach followed by a left round house to the leg and then into the throw. wouldn't it be simpler just to do a left side kick to the knee (style preference .. left round house to the leg would work too) and go straight into the throw?

on danbong 1 the other guy sits there while he works with his arm and strikes his throat before going into the throw. it's not terrible, but if i were going to the inside like that i'd rather strike with the left so i could keep guard against the other guys left hand with my right.

why the step up turning back kicks?

these are kinda nitpicking points though. overall these are the best clips i have seen posted on here for the demonstration of techniques. all the throws looked really solid. (this is my opinion based on only a small amount of experience in jujitsu though. not only is my experience limited but this stuff looked allot like aikido a completely different style than jujitsu. nonetheless, i couldn't see any basic throwing principles violated and they looked like really strong throws executed by someone with allot of practice.) i liked punch defenses 2 and 3 and basic kick defense 1 allot . . they looked effective and economical. like i said, i question some of the defenses they used, but even those were at least executed well.

is this style closely related to aikido or another form of it?

The step up turning back-kicks confuse me though. Isn't the whole purpose of running up and jumping to kick to increase power? Those guys barely budged the heavy bag. Kind of a waste of energy, but then maybe I just don't get what's supposed to be going on here.

Oh Master of IT/ISP, how do you download the clips outside of Quicktime??

If you can school me on this little technique I'll run over to onthemat.com and get started!

I hate, hate, the throw defense. How is that "throw" defense? Maybe a hold defense, but hardly a throw defense.

a little tip in case you didn't know . ...

some sites will only play in quicktime or whatever format they want and will not let you right click on them to download . ..

for these all you have to do is view them once and then find the file in your temp internet files directory .. right click and copy and you stole it anyway.

if this is what you did it's allot easier to right click and save target as for the sites that will let you.

i didnt really understand that eitehr .. the guy just came up and put his hands on his shoulders and got tossed down. it didn't look like a bad throw, but i didn't see him reverse a throw either.

Well the spin adds more power to the sweep thus making the guy hit the ground that much harder (if it were done full contact).

hey thats the best "kung fu" I've seen on this website. Everyone elses stuff doesn't look nearly as much like real kung fu as this hapkido. Sad but true. Did you see the actual chui chiao and chin na? Wow, cool huh?

I've been wondering about that step-back kick, which I've also seen used in a Hwarang do demo vid. I've found that it's a required technique for advancement to orange belt in hapkido. Now I just have to find when you'd use it or is it just a training technique to get to the high flying stuff.
