Staff set recommendations

Greetings people

I want to learn a new staff set (pref traditional shaolin). I already know a few staff sets from our 7 star mantis curriculum, but I would like something with a bit of a different flavor. I plan to learn from either dvd/book for this one.

Does anyone have any personal recommendations?

G-g-g-give them a try. Though you should of course get the beginner two or one first. I reccomend the Shaolin Nine Province Eyebrow Height Staff Set as your first set.

I agree, the Nine Province staff set is a very nice traditional set. The Monkey staff set sucks in my opinion though.

I would like to learn a traditional shaolin set. They have a different flavor, and I think its sometimes nice to learn something completely different from what you know. Plus the quest for knowledge shouldn't ever end. Experience in different arts helps culture people.

Can i ask why?

Its actually weird seeing this done - this is the first weapon for i learned and thought it was quite made up as i never seen anything like it! Took me forever to remember it all too!

It is quite strange compared to most staff sets - just wondered if you think it sucks due to technical ability/boring to do/innefective combat etc (or all of those reasons!)

is pretty good. Traditional, easy to learn, as well as pretty awesome. Give it a go.

Know that learning from a DVD or Book is much more difficult than learning from a real-life instructor. Well, you know that, but I'm leaving a reminder.

it depends on your learning style.

not to mention, it also depends on teaching style. :p

dvd/video from a decent source is often laid out quite well and many are more than capable of learning from it and of course many endorse this type of learning or they wouildn't make the tapes in the first place.

some people can't learn so well from tape, others can learn very well.

I know people who have learned sets from tapes and books and can perform them and understand them better than people who have learned directly from teacher.

anyway, just saying, I am definitely not down with the idea that you can't learn from alternates of a living instructor.

living instructors can also be a hinderance and frankly, if all you are doing is forms, who cares. It's not like you have something better. It's just a pattern. It's like a sewing pattern. Only useful if you can actually make a sweater with it.

Well as already said i just wanted a change and to try something a bit different. To be honest I am not overly fussed about learning the intricacies of the form in terms of application, its just something to break up my training a little.

With the sheer amount of sets within the mantis curriculum, I sometimes find new mantis forms to be a bit repetitive (in the end, a lot are the same just different order or slight variants in application etc). So I figured something 'non-mantis' would be a nice break from the norm.
