If I have to pick,

--

It is that using the straight line method to beat the horizontal method and using the horizontal method to defeat the straight line method.

or Zhi Puo Heng and Heng Puo Zhi.

at first, they sounded contradictory to me. after a while, they really helped me to understand a lot.

I would say, this is probably the most universal theme and theory in many styles if not all.

the idea or concept not only applies to the direction of force, movement but also posture/steps etc etc.

4 ounces repels a thousand pounds. It's a central idea in everything I've studied.

"When using the fist, do not stand on ceremony"
"If you show mercy to your enemy, you are being cruel to yourself"
"Yat dahm, Yee Lik, Sam Gung-Fu"
"Hand to hand, heart to heart,
you don't move, I won't start.
But if you move, I hit first,
And I won't stop until blood's thirst."

"Don't chase (rank), Chase skill."
"Steal your Sifu's hands"
"When you drink the tea, remember from where the water came."

I thought that was "turned 15 cents into a dollar?"...

Oh where to start?
1)If you are faster or more skilled than your opponent, don`t waste time sticking to him.Knock him out.
2)Hard weapons for soft targets, soft weapons for hard targets.
3)lead with pain.
4)All the "NEW" theories everyone haas come up with in the last 20 years because "Traditional arts art obsolete." (Just because it wasn`t taught in the first 6 monthes in the first system you studied, doesn`t make it a new idea. I love to watch these guys wake up on the sidewalk wondering how they got traditionally laid out.)

1. Roughly translated: Against one fist or the other there are a multitude of defenses,
Against superior footwork, there is no defense.

2. Don't fight hands, fight the man.

3. And from Hakaguri: "Fight like you are already dead"

4. Kung fu travels with the man, not the style.

My three favorites:

1. "One fist done well beats ten thousand fists done poorly."

2. "The secret of the power is not secret at all. It is practice."

3. "A stronger, braver, better trained warrior will beat you every time. Therefore condition your body, develop your spirit, and train ceaslessly."

1 if you want to be good practice, if you want to be better practice harder

2 minimum effort, maximum effect

3 if you forget your art for a day, your art will forget about you for two (days).

thanks Rik-but I didn't want to state the obvious-the 6 flows into the 9 which flows into the six-and so on-aka the yin yang theory aka offense and defense become one-hhmm-how very Tantric !
