Read about Zhan and Nian in a couple other forum threads. Some quick thoughts…

Zhan Nian skills are very important in QXTL boxing. They make up a strong component in developmental Jiben gong training and become indispensable later on in free fighting.

Zhan is quite liberal and can mean any kind of seizing or grabbing. Nian is also liberal and can mean any kind of directional flowing and following. Together these exist in most combinations of Mantis exchanges. Just look to some of your two partner flows drills for examples of these.

These two skills gain a little more clarity under our QXTL family grouping of the 13 Zhan Nian Methods. They comprise thirteen different two person drill exercises. Two-person Gou-Lou-Cai is an example of a Zhan Nian method. These thirteen Zhan Nian drills are not exhaustive, but they do integrate some of QXTL’s most essential hand flow patterns and strategies.

Trained diligently they lead to infinite and seamless attacking combinations. It goes without saying that these flow patterns extend very naturally into other setups using combinations of ti, da, na, shuai. Of course this all leads progressively to free fighting.
