Hey everyone,
I am trying to find a school for Kung Fu in the DC area, preferably near bethesda or close to a metro. I recently moved out here for law school. At one point I was doing Hung Gar, not well though, and due to school and a wrist injury had to drop out.

Now seems like a good time to restart, if perhaps only in a limited manner(meaning not doing class everyday).

I am really hoping for Hung Gar, But I did some research and here are the other systems I would take a look at.
tai shing pek kwar
pek kwar=pi gua
hapkido
mantis
long fist
short fist
mok gar
zui quan
choi lei fut
Wing Chun

Any help is greatly appreciated

How did Hapkido find its way into that list?

That is a very good question... I'm not even sure.

I came up with the list at 2:30 am...thats my only excuse.

That and it's list of things I would find Interesting, doesn't mean I see them as similar.

The main reason I came to love Hung Gar was the blocking system. It seemed so simplistic, and the concepts were easy to grasp but amazing still.

I'd really like to do Hung Gar again but I would be interested in about anything.

My former instructor was a great man and taught in a style I really appreciated. He didn't talk down or exude an attitude of betterness or perfection. I really appreciated how approachable he made himself. And I liked having a class structure that was more like a club where he gave me a part of a set to work on and had me work for a while then correct me or then would have a more senior member help. And it wasn't all forms work there was some practical sparing.

Well your in luck as there is lots of good southern style near you. You may have to drive but not to far.

In the D.C. area there is several dope Jow Gar schools, my favorite is Raymond Wong

In Kensington MD you've got the Tai Yim Hung Fut school ( a mixture of Hung Ga and Fut Gar)

Just two of my favorites but there is lots around D.C./MD

I have to say, DC is Jow Ga mecca. Raymond Wong is excellent, as is Hoy Lee. Jow Ga is aka Hung Tau Choy Mei-Head of Hung Ga and Tail of Choy Ga. Very much like Hung Kuen with more emphasis on mobility and tons of sow choys!

i think tai yim is closer to bethesda than wongs school. if you want i can get you a free week pass and you can check it out. PM me.

the good thing about wongs school is that it is essentially free and jow ga is a really cool style. but it would probably be in your best interest to check out both styles. with a hung ga back ground either style would prolly be a fairly smooth transition.

For TCMA in washington D.C. i would highly recommend Sifu Othal Thomas (7 Star praying mantis, of course Wong's Chinese Boxing and another jow ga school called Hung Tao Choy Mei (Sifu Muhammand). close to D.C. i would also recommend Tai Yim Kung Fu (Hung Fut). you can find all of these schools on the internet

Good luck
