Hi guys

can any one tell me the cantonese names for the following weapons please.

Sai

Sickles (like Kama in okinawan arts)

9 section whip chain

hooked walking stick

any other cantonese names of weapons appreciated...

in fact anything cantonese martial art related

hehe yes I'm started learning cantonese :)

ps. just saw the forum is grouped as Wai Jia and Nei Jia ... whats the cantonese for these terms :P

and do i have these correct

xingyi quan - yingyi kune
taiji quan - tai gik kune
?ba gua zhang - bart gwa jeung

Don’t remember the Cantonese for sai at the moment however if my memory serves right.

Nine Section Whip, Gau Jit Bin
Simplified 九节鞭, Traditional 九節鞭

Seven Section Whip, Chat Jit Bin (also heard it pronounced Tut Jit Bin)
Simplified 七节鞭, Traditional 七節鞭

Sickle, Lim Dao
Simplified 鐮刀, Traditional 镰刀

Double Sickles, Soeng Lim Dao
Simplified 双鐮刀, Traditional 雙镰刀

Don’t remember the Cantonese for sai at the moment however if my memory serves right.

Lim Dao rings a bell actually

tid something i can't recall for sai.. but i think other terms also

well i know tid means "iron"

thanks for trying to post the characters... i know japanese character but can read chinese character since many are the same .. WuShu - BuJutsu etc....

it's got characters in nice big print and the Mandarin & Cantonese names for each - it was intrumental when I was learning to speak to my sifu years back

I've seen on the net the chinese sai called a Gen, but I don't know if its Cantonese.

Simplified chars: 铁尺
Traditional chars: 鐵尺

Wai Jia = Ngoi Gar (intial Ng like the ng in sing)
Nei Jia = Noi Gar

It is difficult to translate anything into or from chinese language. Cantonese language has many sub dielects and subtleties that makes it hard to get a straight answer from anyone.

Laets take for example Fist: 拳

In Cantonese, from different people I heard it pronounced / Spelled:

Kuen
Kune
Kuern
Kun

Same thing as Double Edged Sword: 劍

In Cantonese:

Gim
Ghim
Gheem

The only true way to translate is the calligraphy. Don't get hung up on whether it's mandarin or cantonese

in korean, it's stick-u,sword-u, and um..nunchaku-u?
