It was based on the novel by Jin Yong.
It was aired in China, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore.

Jin Yong said he was most satisfied with this one out of many movies that based on his novels. He handpicked Liu Yi Fei for the role of the leading female character.

My fave old-school CMA film is Shaolin Martial Arts. It's directed by Chang Cheh and stars Fu Sheng; is also Gordon Liu's first movie appearance. It's quite a well-done film, and really captures the spirit of the Shaolin legends; Disciples of Shaolin comes in a close second for me.
I'm not sure about TV series. I suppose my fave that I've seen is The Tai Chi Master with Wu Jing.
