Hi Nick,

Yes!!! the Gum Sau can be used in the way Master Kwok uses it, and with great success. My Sifu an instructor under Samuel Kwok as well as having Black Belts in several other arts including TKD and Kenpo. I have seen him use the Gum Sau in this way.

The Gum Sau must make contact above the kickers knee. This takes all of the power out of the kick, and can damage the kickers leg if he is doing a snapping type round kick as in TKD. The Gum Sau making contact in this way can cause the kicker to hyperextend his leg. The key to this use of Gum Sau is angle of execution and contact above the knee!

Hope this helps!:)

This will never work against a decent kicker in real time.

If you're close enough to gum the knee you are close enough to use a better counter than that (one that doesn't involve dropping your hand and exposing your head).

Besides a good kicker wont throw a head kick from that range

Look at these guys...do you honestly think that would work against them?

Honestly some of the hokey c_rap peddled by the 'Grand Masters' out there will get you killed

PT Barnum said it , many 'Masters' live by it....Ive heard 'masters' say things like 'the beginer is the bread and butter of the school, high drop out rate , most money taken on enrollment, but trying to keep a core of loyal 'fans' based on inner school cliques, etc..."
Dont care about beginers because they are the ones impressed by 'gum sao' blocking kick ....1 finger take downs ... all while standing in one place the whole time !! AMAZING WHERE DO I SIGN UP :D .."what's that ? death touch class is extra ? how much ? lmao!
You break walnuts with a punch , ooooh sign me uuuup ;)

I got what I still consider to be very good basics that have held up against many lines of WC and in other full-contact stuff from a guy under Sam, but I have to say, he never taught me anything like a lot of this vid, and to him it would have been an anathema to WC... which is perhaps why he no longer has a public class.

wow gum sau to stop a round kick to the head

good luck with that:rolleyes:Yeah, can work, but as a last-ditch panic thing, and there are far better things to do with the range and far safer defaults.

As for the Carlson-Sam partnership - great business! The long lanky step in Sam's teaching on that vid at about 2 mins would work once, if lucky, against anyone competent.

It would have been nice to see more WC stuff working into close range/clinch where the good set-ups and flow into the JJ would come in in that seminar. Maybe there was some more...? It seemed like a waste of an opportunity to teach all that shonky long range stepping stuff with a mostly static partner. Just a couple of points.

BTW, I just thought I'd come back and mention, although it sounds like I'm dissing him, and although he does a lot of things I don't agree with technically and in terms of training paradigms, the seminar should offer something for anybody.

Sam's strengths are in the subtlety, softness and speed in deflection: very soft, yet very hard.

Not taking anything away from the other guy in this fight 'cause he had the stones to get in there in the first place, but drop your hands at any stage and your talking to the carpet my friend - even if someone throws a half ass kick, the follow up is ALWAYS coming if they have half an idea

In my opinion oneof the greatest weakness in WC is a lack of conditioning - even if you're not a pro-fighter. If you aint got the gas you will tank it after a minte or 2 of high adrenaline pressure. Demos are fine, but lets see a master gettin his groove on in a scenario that really speaks volumes about how WC can work.

This isn't a weakness in WC, it's a weakness of the individual. If someone is out of shape, and gases in a fight (like many pro fighters do that I have seen), it is their fault, not the trainers, not the style they practice, not the people they train with or the head coach/sifu/grandmaster. WC is strictly a training system, meaning it gives your body a engine to run from, how you tweak that engine, what fuel you use to run that engine, how you maintain that engine, how you modify that engine, how you use that engine, etc etc... is totally up to you the individual and not dictated by any other factor:)

I stand corrected...what I shoul dhave said is "In my opinion oneof the greatest weakness I SEE IN INDIVIDUALS DOING WC is a lack of conditioning".....that and the fact alot of us just train with other WC guys all the time....
