Kung-Fu Horror?

Anybody know of a really good Kung-Fu Horror flick to show your friends who're SORT OF interested in Kung-Fu movies?

I was thinking about Mr. Vampire or Dreadnaught...

What would you guys recommend?

Mr. vampire and spiritual kung fu are two good ones dreadnaught is not a kung fu horror film.

Check out Boxer's Omen. Wang Lung Wei has an awesome fight with Bolo, and that is it for fights. It turns into a weird black magic movie. definitely one of my favorite Shaw movies. Phillip Ko vomits up a huge live eel into his sink. crazy movie. Also check out Seventh Curse with Chin Siu Hou and D!ck Wei. THey are not scary horror movies, but a hell of a lot of fun.

Also, there is Sammo Hung's The Dead and the Deadly. And the above-mentioned Mr. Vampire, and Encounter of the Spooky Kind (a.k.a., Spooky Encounters). Maybe better than all of these in terms of kung fu horror is Human Lanterns (or Human Skin Lanterns). There was also an old Shaw Brothers/Hammer Films co-production called Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires starring David Chiang and Peter Cushing. It's about Van Helsing tracking Count Dracula to China...odd but interesting if you can find it.

None of these movies are really scary, but are fun to watch.

In the early '80s, Shaw Brothers studios made some horror films that I can't remember the titles to, but were a tiny bit creepy, certainly more so than the films I mentioned. All I remember is one starred Lily Li...it was a period piece, but had to kung fu that I recall. Sorry I couldn't help with this one.

I can't believe I haven't seen Human LAnterns. That movie sounds awesome. I think Sun Chung directed it, one of my favorite directors.

One Shaws horror movie to star far away from is Black Magic. God I hated that. I heard Black Magic 2 is a lot better.

Human Lanterns hands down is the best kung fu horror flick. Sun Chung's movies are great.

What about Kung-Fu from Beyond the Grave and Kung-Fu Zombie? I think these are both Billy Chong movies. I've never seen either of these.

Kung Fu Beyond the Grave is good, but not great. I liked Kung Fu ZOmbie more. THey are kung fu movies. Not really any horror in them.


Magic Cop is worth seeing. Tons of weird magic stuff going on.

Ghosts Galore was a strange combination of ghosts, wizards, Japanese ninja, and comedy. It starred Chin Siu Ho, Lo Lieh, and Hwang Jang Lee. Not scary at all, but it had some interesting effects for its time, esp. at the final showdown. It was certainly inspired by Encounter of the Spooky Kind (Spooky Encounters).

chinese ghost story are always good. not really a kung fu flick, but BIO ZOMBIES by wilson yip is good.

Evil cat was ok......i think it was 1 or 2 that had Lau Kar Leung in it.
Kinda creepy and weird.

The Ghostfacers have pulled off a truly phantasmagoric feat. They’ve stepped out of your television and entered the real world. Need proof? They’re blogging and they have home videos. Totally spooky, huh?

In a new viral video, the Winchester Brother’s rival ghost hunters teach you the basics of GMA. That’s Ghost Martial Arts. Duh. With all of the buffoonery of the comic foil in a Fred Savage comedy Supernatural’s Geek Squad smack and whack each other in a low rent playground. In true kindergarten roughhousing fashion Ed gets to be the GMA master while Harry has to play the ghost, and that’s worse than playing the cowboy to somebody else’s Indian or The Joker to somebody else’s Batman, or Dwight to someone else’s Michael Scott. The Office? Isn’t that what kids play now? No?

In February the Ghostfacers started a blog on Wordpress - a simple creation tool for people who aren’t techies to put together blogs. It’s very plain, standardized and written completely in character. There’s humor all through it, with Spruce’s favorite television series being LOST, The Twilight Zone and Twin Peaks, or Maggie’s hero being “Richard Feynman, for making quantum electrodynamics so accessible!” And yet, at the same time it’s surprisingly plausible.

The blog, unfortunately, has not been updated since its creation, so all that remains is the initial website - lame but still fun for Supernatural fans to browse five minutes.

The viral video and blog are hardly new. The Ghostfacers are regular Internet geeks, with a page on the CW site with other amusing videos, Ghostfacers.com and Hellhoundslair, with user testimonials about contact with the great beyond. They’re all part of the way cult entertainment franchises do business now, an odd form of marketing whose purpose is not always clearly aligned with the goals of traditional scratch and sniff magazine perfume glossies and 30 second television spots. Rather than ads for the content they more often than not feel like content themselves, primarily appealing, as in this case, to audiences who are already hardcore fans of a franchise rather than the uninitiated.

Will such sites stir the Ghostfacers or Supernatural up any new customers? Probably not. Anyone who would need convincing to watch Supernatural probably wouldn’t know or care who the Ghostfacers were. But the new materials might keep enthusiasm alive from Thursday to Thursday - as though that were an issue.
