I didn't think it was funny. The sword dance looked alittle goofy, but Jewish dances tend to look funny, so...

It looked pretty good to me. Obviously a heavy kung fu base, though highly derived to meet Jewish expectations. From the sword play I'm thinking they didn't get any weapons forms from kung fu. It did say the dude was in Japan for a while, but I didn't see anything that screamed karate or any Japanese art to me.

It is no more a thousand year old art than pankration is.

Oh but the dude does look like he comes "straight out of a comic book" though, that was funny. An evil genius with an island and a cat.

Do I believe the ancient Hebrews had martial arts? Of course they did....

Do I think it looked a lot like a combination of Hapkido and Kung Fu? No, in fact, the sword he is doing has lots of elements of modern wushu movement yet very few characteristics of historically documneted sword technique from the region and the period

Some People need to do something that is distinctly their own, I think that's what you are seeing

Well now wait a minute Ross, a lot of what I see looks like Moslem martial arts...wouldn't that whole area have been ancient Moslem homelands?

It's probably some family variant of that.

Its pretty goofy, and funny just admit it.
Yah I am sure the "hebrews" did. Depending on the time period it probably resembled whatever ruling party was in power in Israel. IE when the Macabees won back Israel they probably were using roman influenced MA. When the Babylonians ruled they probably used something influenced by that group as well.
Its pretty clear that this guy is a hoax and is using religion to blind people. Israel really has really no good MA schools.. If people are happy thats cool with me, I still think its pretty funny. I love the mix of israeli dancing.

yah its ancient everyone's homeland thats the problem. everyone wants the same stupid plot of sand.

Why don't people ever fight over, like, the Galapagos, or Canary Islands, or maybe Malibu?

I was deployed to Iraq for a year, and let me tell you, I can't find a single redeemable thing about the Baghdad area. It gets stupid hot, the sandstorms are monstrous, the rainy season is a months long mud bath, and people won't stop blowing stuff up. Who stops in a place like that and says "Hey, let's live here!"?

wellI have never been to iraq (I won't visit anytime soon),but israel has become a very nice place to visit. The Israeli people transformed the land from sand and swamp into a really pretty country. You have farms in the desert, elat which is a very pretty resort city. Its a complete night and day from when the turks controlled israel.

But you really need to put things into context its all about religion, power, money. The middle east has all three. Well the people don't have much money, but that doesn't mean its not there.

what strikes me as odd is that they do not demonstrate any defenses against beard or sidelocks grabs - you'd think these would be very important given their tonsorial predelictions...

Which "Moslem martial arts"? The ones done by Moslems in CHINA?

While we may not have a historically verifiable intact lineage of ancient middle eastern martial arts traditions, we still have TONS of the weapons.... and weaponry leads to authoritative observations about how fighting was conducted. IE, you can't use a Medieval broadsword the same way you can a Renaissance epee....

2. Wrestling is popular in Islamic countries
3. You have silat from Malaysia and Indonesia!
4. The usual Hui, Uighur, etc and baji, xing-i Muslim versions of Western China.
