Description
The Zhou Tong Zhuan Qi (Legend of Zhou Tong) begins when Zhou is a young man in his 20's and follows his adventures until his death as an elderly man. In his first adventure, he tracks down the kidnapped wife of his martial arts master, the military officer Jin Tai. The kidnapping was apart of a plot to trick Jin Tai into retiring from his post to find his wife, leaving China's northern borders vulnerable to attack from barbarian tribes. However, Zhou succeeds in returning Jin's wife and even beheads a barbarian general in combat. During the following volumes, he battles the wicked monks of Stone Buddha Temple, the pirates of Tai Lake, and the armies of the Liao Dynasty. He later takes young Lin Chong and Lu Junyi as his students. But things take a turn for the worse when his students join the Water Margin bandits and are later killed by corrupt court officials, he nearly dies from a venomous snake bite, and he receives a message that the now elderly Jin Tai is deathly ill. Zhou rushes to the Shaolin monastery where Jin had retired and sits by his side until his death. But before he dies, Jin orders Zhou to find a righteous student to spread all of his skills to. Zhou eventually becomes the tutor of the Wang estate and later adopts Yue Fei as his son and student. The comic ends with Zhou's death and speaks of Yue Fei's fame as a general and martyr.
This Lianhuanhua-style comic book is actually an illustrated version of Zhou's rare fictional biography Tie Bei Jin Dao Zhou Tong Zhuan (Iron Arm, Golden Saber: The Biography of Zhou Tong). It serves as an unofficial prequel to General Yue Fei's fictional 18th century bio, The Story of Yue Fei.
Even though it is in Chinese, this item would be a great inexpensive Christmas or birthday gift for anyone interested in Chinese culture, martial arts, the Water Margin (a.k.a. "Outlaws of the Marsh"), General Yue Fei, or just comic books in general.
