$50 and less. Book are probably out, he has tons of them in his office and instructors office.

He's a cop by day and CMA instructor by night.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Give the gift that keeps on giving all year round - a subscription (http://www.martialartsmart.net/19341.html). :D

We also have tons of gift ideas (http://www.martialartsmart.net/Gift_Ideas.html), including gift certificates.

Depends on what he is into.

Example of what I gave a sifu one year for the holidays.

I purchased the character for Wu, done by a master chinese caligraphy artist, then i matted and framed it myself. Sanding, cutting, painting. a bit of time, but it looked really nice when I was done. It also doubles for some artwork at his school.

He already has a subscription.

He doesn't drink. That would've been an easy one if he did. Got a wide range liqour and wine here at the house.

I do like Lucas' idea and the gift certificate route.

Arhat, "UTILITY BELT", that's pretty funny. :D On that note though, I know he wants an AR15 rifle. With a $50 budget I don't think I can fit a $900 rifle into it though. Maybe after I win the lottery.

Thanks guys.

Why limit yourself to martial arts based ideas. Go for things that mean you "KNOW" your teacher. It will mean a lot more.

For example, one time, I KNEW my teacher had a function coming up that required a suit. I also knew that he would not go out and get a new one on his own but ... So his birthday gift was a trip to the men's store and a new suit that he picked out. - which he still wears to things today. Anything martial related would have been no big deal to him - he has been there...done that. But something he uses personally, or a computer gadget - THAT he appreciates since it implies I see him a something other than a martial art resource...he is a mentor and a person

How about a gift certificate to a nice resturaunt for him and his lady? You get to give a nice gift, and he gets to do something nice for her. IT`S A WIN/ WIN!!
