You know, I get it. There are just some males out there who, when they see women in any competition, will revert to attention starved, hormone driven 16-year-olds. But must they go wander into a section of the arena that families are in and talk about it loudly with great vulgarity???

I took my 11-year-old son to his first live MMA event this past week end, Ring of Fire 31. I figured this would be a good one for him to start off with since he personally knew 1 for the fighters. We ended up leaving after the 5th fight because of the antics of a crowd of about 10-15 guys who were wandering all over the place visiting “friends” in the section my son and I had seats in.

So I had this epiphany a bit ago. Rather than ranting about uncouth drunks randomly roaming all over the place at MMA events, and making parents with kids uncomfortable, maybe I should ask the event sponsor to make an alcohol free section. Then they’d have to go get their drinks and drink them elseware. And none of the morons who were being uncouth started out that way when they came up to our section from the floor seating; they became that way after a few beers.

So, any thoughts? Good idea/bad idea?

im thinking you have a point, no event promoters wants to push people away-but than i think, dude, you brought an 11 year old to an mma event? kinda young no?

You get the same sh1t at a pro football game or baseball game, so her taking the kid to an MMA event is not the issue. Men should behave themselves and not show their @ss when they drink.

If you take away the alcohol, a lot of people just won't go.

But at larger pro events you can get somewere by complaining... The Broomfield event Center is very good sized for this type of even. What would it hut to make a couple hundred seats out of 15,000 a no-alcahol zone. Not saying you can't go in there is you've had a beer, only that you can't drink it while sitting there.

People misbehaving at an event where people go to see other people get physically abused?
I am shocked and appalled !!

No, not too young - You'd never think twice about taking you 11 year-old to a ball game, any ball game. By and large, MMA fans tend to be very respectful of the younger fans. It's not the event but the crowd; every now and then you get some drunk with little man syndrom who would probably not have acted like that in front of a kid... ecxept he was drinking...

I might add that my son was far from being the only pre-teen in the crown Saturday night.

Maybe, but think about this. What is the number of males 18-39, many of which drink, compared to families in regards to attendance of MMA fights. I'm not saying your wrong, but a promoter will not risk losing money if it means p***ing off some of it's biggest ticket buyers. Like MK said, most sporting events at that level have lots of drunks, and combat sports seem to attract a lot. Maybe you could use it as a learning tool for your son of what not to grow up to be:D

my relatives know if I drink, I will talk loud and "drunken boxing".

so when I attended this wedding, there was an open bar area for drinks and ****tails.

I only had soda, since I had to drive afterwards.

then people were not offended that I refused to drink liquors.

--

agreed that in any big or small events including family, or social.

designating area for smoke and drink only.

--

I know for sure I would "mis" behave after some "yellow soup" down to the stomach. yellow soup is a chinese slang for beer and wine.

Yep. This is why I came soliciting advice here. I didn't want to look like one of those people who try to force thier ideals on others. Point blank: as it has somehow become acceptable for men to be to be horrible drunks in public sporting events, I won't take my kids to something they really enjoy.

And to clarify, it wasn't "look at the bum on her" type stuff. it was XXX playboy fantacy type stuff. Right down to one of them describing his "wood".:mad:

um, let's see now...you're in a venue where violence is glorified and considered sport (which it is), there is a predominant air of competitive fighting going on and you would like to see people tame themselves a little.

Well, I for one think you are asking for an awful lot here.
Fighting is the height of incivility, blood sports are generally favoured by so called low brows.

I think you'd have a hard time doing a suit and tie gig at a face bash fest. :p

I agree.

You want alcohol free and more civilized surroundings, go to a more structured and disciplined competitions. Traditional Kung Fu Tourney, Tai Chi tourney. Shooting competitions. All are alcohol free, more disciplined attendees and still has that competitive atmosphere.

Heck if you want a more demure alcohol party, go check out a polo match. :D

Forgive me for stating this opinion but, Why in the sam hill FUK would you take your 11 year old to one of these events? You may as well take him to a WWF event because its the same thing as taking him where you did, only difference is that the fighting is real at ring of fire. But its the same white trash dyptheria ridden crowd with all the scumbags coming out of their sh!tholes to go see some glorified violence.

'S why I asked them. The stuff in the ring girls thread is what I was seeing. But I've know many of these charactors long enough to know that A) they would try to tone it down around kids and B) thier responces would likely be similar to the responces of the owning organization. When trying to figure out how a typical MMA fan would react to something, you ask the typical MMA fan, not a tennis fan, right?

Because Ring of Fire the best local MMA in Denver... And his wrestling coach was on the fight card.

Well...the alcohol is probably having a part in why they were being so vulgar... at least they didn't hit on you in front of your kids!

I can't even go out to dinner with my kids at a sports restaurant because of what Becca is describing. There is always some guy, or group of guys, who get drunk and think it's their right to yell and curse at the top of their lungs at the TV screen.

I hate to say it, but it might not have bugged me so much if they had actually watched the fight... My son was even rolling his eyes when the biggest loud-mouth kept asking dumb questions like "who's on bottom" and "wasn't that guy in the last fight?"

Actually, WWE events aren't that bad- they're almost family friendly- (usually a couple of semi-nude women and some "bad" wrestler usually has some mild vulgarity as part of their act). WWE won't allow things to go too far, even the fans- they sell toys and such- kids are a big part of their target demo.

No, MMA has degraded. It's a circus full of A**holes. I hate the pageantry, I hate the vulgarity, I hate the fans, I pretty much don't like the sport and what it's become- 'specially after bodog got involved. I do like watching the IFL, I think that MMA could be somewhat rescued- but it's heading in a bad direction. Where's the class? (I don't like "dancers" in the NFL either) tapout tv, this is martial virtue?

Becca- you'd need a serious league with serious athletes to get any kind'a respectablility back into MMA.
