I just recently moved to the area and I have been looking for a school that teaches Northern Praying Mantis as I have studied it in the past and so far, I can only find one school in the area that has Mantis in the curriculum and it is called Yoo's Authentic Martial Arts. The instructor also teaches what looks like a Shaolin/ Long Fist based art however he states that he also teaches Seven Star, Plum Flower, 8 -Step and Six Harmony Mantis. Is it possible to teach so many arts under one roof well? Has anyone ever heard of the teacher Jun Saeng Yoo or know any thing about his Mantis curriculum? Thanks for any help!

If you are at all close to DC look for Sifu Othal Thomas (seung ga fat, here at the forum). He teaches a good line of Seven Star but may not be close enough to you.

I don't know of that teacher and while it's not impossible to have learned and be able to teach that many different styles of mantis, it's rare.

Also, northern styles can be fairly complementary. So, go check out his classes in person and see what you think for yourself. If you've trained before, you should be able to evaluate well enough for yourself.

Visit his class- if you like what you see, join.

He learned Mantis from his mom?

Born in Jin Ju, Korea, Grand Master Yoo grew up in Seoul where he began studying martial arts at age 6. He first studied Kung Fu with his mother and Hap Ki Do with his cousin while still a child. By the time he entered middle school and high school he had been training more than half his life in Kung Fu, Hap Ki Do, and Tae Kwon Do. Grand Master Yoo became the National Collegiate Champion in (1967-1968) at Kyung Hee University in Seoul.

Thanks for the information everyone. I will stop by the school and I will attend one of Othal Thomas' classes as well even though DC is a little far from where I live.

Cheers!

I have been told stories from my Shifu how Masters would teach some of the more advanced levels of kung fu to the females.

beijing,
all the posts that responded have good advice.... but I would like to add that I feel leary about a person who teaches TOO many arts even thought they are complimentary onto each other.

I would be reluctant to learn from a musician who teaches 5 different instruments........ you can only be really good at one or even worse, so so at all the rest.............
