Pardon if this has been asked or discussed previously. Just finished reading
Patricia Bragg book Apple Cider Vinegar Health System. Any thoughts or
opinions on ACV use? I thought the book was informative and i'm gonna
give it a try but wanted opinions of some of you more informed KFO peers.

I got heavy into vinegars after reading this interview with a former Chinese Olympic Gymnastic coach. I can't remember his name at all, but he made all of his athletes do a shot of vinegar every day. He said it made them more flexible. At about the same time, there was this movement in the health circles about ACV, so I got into doing a shot a day for a year or so. This must have been about a decade ago. I can't say that it had much of a noticeable effect, truth be told. I was not more flexible, nor was my health significantly improved. But I enjoy vinegar for the flavor and will douse salads and chips, dip breads, and so on. Our pantry is stocked with all sorts of vinegars, apple cider, balsamic, red wine, we probably have a dozen bottles open at any given time. I don't drink it straight anymore, but I might if offered.

Yep, that's why I'm so full of **** and vinegar.

I believe the theory behind the vinegar from a TCM perspective is that the sour flavor goes to the liver, which in turn controls the sinews. Vinegar is noted in TCM for softening tendons, but too much could easily damage the "liver qi" and make your tendons weaker or dried out.

ACV is believed to be very good for health, although the portion and frequency consumed may be an important factor. Too much acidity can soften the enamel on your teeth and leach the calcium from your bones. However, a shot (or two) a day seems harmless enough.

Bear in mind the author of the book you read, jow yeroc, has the motivation of selling product in mind, so take the info with a grain of salt... better yet, take it with some raw garlic and honey :D

Yeah true there is a degree of commercialism with this particular book in that
they have their own brand. And i will definitely do more research. Apparently
the author's father Paul Bragg was a fitness and natural health pioneer in
this country and is well known for his study and system for longevity.
These people don't seem to be fly by night and the book is not
like drink vinegar and cure your cancer while adding inches of length and
girth to your member:D It should be coupled with clean lifestyle, exercise, etc.
They also make a distinction between ACV which is distilled and pasteurized
i.e. grocery store, see through and pure ACV with the beneficial bacteria and
enzymes, undistilled and opaque. The dose is 1-2 tablespoons diluted in a
cup of water with honey. And it actually was not bad. I did it with warm water
like a tea.
But as i said i will continue to do more research. The book is worth a quick read
if anybody else should care to.
Thanks Gene and herb ox the I-dren for the replies.

I almost it straight from the bottle.

Bragg is right up there with Dr. Bronner - love their products and respect there work, especially the funky marketing. They could have been like Kellogg if the time had been right, but now they're delegated to the nefarious realm of health gurus. Well, I support them. Tasty and useful products, reasonably priced and good for you.

You definitely need to get the ACV that has the 'mother' in it, just because it looks so nasty, like a dead jellyfish or a gob of mucus.

True indeed!! Speaking of vinegar have you ever heard of or used bamboo
vinegar patch. Adhere to bottom of foot before going to bed at night and it is
supposed to draw out toxins?

My wife has used ACV a nubmer of times, both in luquid form and the little gelcaps. For her, it seems to cause no positive reuslts, and a number of minor problems that disappear with discontinued use.

Consider the reason you are taking a supplement, other than people claiming its some kind of all-purpose wonder cure--Different people will respond differently to the same treatment. If you feel healthy, have good energy levels, and no health problems etc, perhaps you shouldnt fix what isnt broken! If on the other hand, you have poor eergy levels, dont feel healthy, or have other health issues, then IMO, your best bet is to determine what the problem is and how best to deal with it. If ACV is part of that solution, then great! =)

Point taken, but i was interested in it as more of a tonic/toning/cleansing agent.
Healthy people take tonics still. My old neighbor in NY, 80 some yrs old, West
Indian, still takes and swears by wood root tonic everyday. I'm in decent
health and am against cure alls too. Just like that little extra and if its natural
and harmless i'm interested. Heck i even met a 90 yr old guy on a cruise once
and when i asked him what was his secret to longevity, he told me stay away
from fried food, exercise, if you smoke don't "swallow" it(inhale), and have a
shot of brandy everyday to thin the blood. Wow. He was a cool bloke too.
Thanks for reply plumdragon. Aren't you the herb guy?? I've been to your site
before a number of times. Excellent resource.

jow yeoc,

Not *the* herb guy, just *a* herb guy. Glad you liked the site. =)

About taking things when healthy: There are a number of "food-grade" substances that you can take just like food that have tonic and health properties and are acceptable for long-term therapeutic use. Go-ji berries (Lycium) is a real popular one, and yams and such. I do really enjoy a good glass of red wine each night with dinner. So youre right, there are lots of items that can be taken to promote health and longevity, and this case, ACV might be worth a try, a tablespoon here and there...Just dont over do it, and best of all, listen to that body fo yours! =)
