Hi Everyone,

Hope I can get some guidance from some of you. My Sifu has decided to close up shop and retire. Are there any traditional retirement rituals that we should/could offer to him? He's too proud to talk of things like that to us and gets really grouchy when we ask.

Thanks for your help.

Eat Rice,

A gold watch sounds great. Make it a Rolex. Nothing says you've spent money like a rolex.

Is he CHINESE??

Bruce is completely right. For some reason I assumed he was American. Watch good American. Watch bad Chinese.

Gifts of food or clothing in public celebrations are appropriate, a plaque or flag at the official ceremony is traditional and the red envelopes in private are pretty much the mainstay.

Disciples, however, maintain the practice of supporting their teacher even after retirement.

a party in his honor...invite old students, friends, everyone...everyone can tell him publicly what/how the sifu has impacted student lives.

Thanks for the ideas all! I can just imagine the look on his face at a strip club yelling, "Woah:eek:--dai bo, dai bo!" Hilarious.

HSK's tombstone idea is funny, too!

Someone actually did get him a watch one time and it urked him. "Lahp Sahp--watch no good" was his chorus that night. I thought it was nice, though. Too funny...

Any other ideas of any sort are welcomed and appreciated!

Thanks again!

Maybe a watch isn't good because it reminds you of how little time you have.

Oh well, scratch the watch idea. Can't go wrong with red envelopes.

Hello Sic Fan,

Here is one that is non traditional, yet, very traditional:

Amass video footage of all of your Sifu's students and friends congratulating him and well as telling him how much your Sifu's presence has contributed to their lives. If you have archival demo footage, it would be great to intersperse some of it between the testimonials. Being a Sifu is a future based activity and it would be nice to give him a video testimony of his contribution to the world.

Just have the video camera ready when the tears start flowing when he view's it!

Be careful, a real sifu will kill everyone who witnesses him cry.

not a gold watch. or any other kind. its bad ettiquete to give a time piece in chinese culture. or at least thats what i have always been told.A watch is OK, a clock is not. The reason is the pronunciation:

送鐘 (presenting a clock as a gift) sounds like 送終 (paying last respects)

if you know his wife at all, you might ask her what he would like... often the best ally in doing something nice is the spouse. But, um, not ALWAYS...

Yeah! that's it! Ask Si-Mo if the old man would like a tug job from a blonde with big boobies! That's a perfect idea :D

It's a ritual where the sifu washes his hands in a gold basin. It's symbolic of washing off all the blood. Sic Fan, will your Sifu be doing this ritual?
