I learned about half of a Nan Quan competition form from a Wushu coach(Xue Yi, former head coach of the Beijing Wushu team), but he had to go back to Canada, and I never got to learn the rest of it. As time passes and I keep getting better under my new instructor, I am anxious to finish learning this form.

I guess since this is the southern style forum, this is the right place to ask.
I have looked on the internet(youtube and such) for this form, but every Nan Quan form I find on there is either a very traditional looking one, or one where you shoot your hands straight up and down in front of you to start off the form, looks cool, but not the form I learned.

The one I learned starts off with raising your arms to the side, then out in front of you, quickly snapping the fingers apart like claws, then slowly gripping the fingers into the palm. Then shooting the fists straight down, then snapping them to your sides.

I don't know if this is a good description, but if you know what form I am talking about, please link me to a good, clear video of this form, so I can see if it is the right form, then hopefully try to finish learning it.

I dont think Nanquan is a set routine as it used to be anymore. As far as I gather, the new rules allows for any form, but they have to have certain key elements (like Pao Choy, Jong Choy etc) which will set nanquan appart from the other forms.

I went to the World Wushu Champs at the end of last year, and the nan quan forms I saw from some of the players were shocking. Although the HK and Maccau guys (and one guy from China) were still doing proper southern sets, the rest were just doing a few southern moves with a northern routine.

The ones firepalm listed are good nanquan forms in my opinion.

Well, you still have training/duan forms which are set routines like most any CMA system. Competition forms are a completely different animal now days though. No more compuslosry/standardized forms. Everything is self created and formed around the "nandu" scoring system (more points for bigger tricks). Basically, most end up being like the chang quan forms with the occasional southern movement and some screaming  Pretty boring to watch... what's the point of having two different divisions if they look pretty much the same?

Yeah, that is the form. those chicks are alot better at it than I am. You live in vancouver, do you know of Xue Yi, he teaches wushu in vancouver.

They're so **** fast though, it will be hard to break down the moves I haven't learned yet, but it looks like I know about 70% of it already.

Thanks.

B-Rad is right these forms are still part of the Duan system & used by many for training, as well they are used for the Junior World Wushu Championships. The Junior Worlds now uses both the original set of International Compulsories (prevalent in the 90's) and the second set of International Compulsories adopted in 2000. The younger children use the 3rd Duan Chang Quan & 4th Duan Weapons.

Xue Yi, yes I know him but as far as I knew he had moved to Houston Texas to open a school with former Beijing Wushu Team Coach Li Junfeng. I had not heard anything about him returning to Vancouver.

Regarding the Nanquan set if you go to any Chinese DVD / VCD store they probably carry a version of the Nanquan instructional VCD or DVD, usually pretty cheap with slow motion & technical breakdowns in the teaching of the form.

Glad the links helped! The chick in the first link is the girl that the original form came from Chan Lai Hung of the Guangzhou Wushu Team. ;)

Yes, Xue Yi was teaching here in Houston, but the school has been kinda slow to pick up steam, so a local instructor is running things at the moment(he is very good, and has his own school).

I think Xue Yi is now going back and forth between China and Vancouver to teach. I hope he comes to visit sometime. I enjoyed taking lessons from him and he is an awesome Wushu coach. He was able to teach me very well even though he knew almost no English and I knew even less Chinese.
